I'm looking to buy an alaskan mill to start milling. My largest saw is a MS660 with a 36" bar, so I think it's best to use this. Should I buy the 36" inch alaskan mill or the 30"? What woult be the largest bar i can use for milling on my MS660?

Go for the 36".

The price difference is minimal. If you ever need a wider cut you could buy a 42" bar, or if you find you want to do more milling a buy a bigger saw then 36" will deal with most things you run across.

probably will but slowly and painfully and i def wouldn't bother. and they are hard to get for 660 i think? milling oak etc with a 30'' on a 660 is plenty work for the saw i would say.

All factory ripping chain is semi chisel - full chisel tend to be very juddery and aggressive although in some soft woods may work well...

I have a 36" on an 066 and it's fine, it's definitely worth getting some gran berg ripping chains, I find they are better than the stihl

Also I really recommend an gran berg electric sharpener from rob d as you can get the chain better than factory sharp in the woods!

Good

Luck and post some pics of your work rich
