Vertical Log Splitter (log holding paw feature)???

In the process of narrowing down which vertical splitter to buy. I have noticed on Videos that on some makes of splitter, that the LEFT PULL DOWN HANDLE HAS A PAW ON IT ,to steady the top of the log as you split it. Do you find this handle paw feature useful,as I have noticed from what I can see that Binderberger or Posch do not have this feature even though they are more pricey machines. Uniforest and Krapan do have the paw handle Rabaud does not and also on the Rabaud it looks as though one operates the up down levers from the side but it does look a very solid splitter. Thanks for any info.

Yes the paw handle is great IMO. Before buying I was very dubious and liked the Thor Leader system but after a visit to a show thought paw would be OK. Now would not be without it. Did slightly adjust mine so it could grip close to the blade as for some reason it was set so it could only get within around 4" of the edge.

I like the look of that paw as well. BGU also run the paw system, but are pricey. Correct me if I'm wrong but I also think you have the option of bypassing the paw and using these machines one handed as well if you choose to (saves doing any mod's if its a private machine).

Can't say I am tempted. It works very well and met too many people with digits missing due to mishaps with splitters to risk it.

Think you have the a Thor with the leader system Rowan how do get on with it?

Yeah thats right, on the magik 13t (pto). One can hold the log, and make adjustments as the blade advances i.e re-centering etc, until the blade makes contact. Its a funny kind of pressure valve, it has great clamping power, yet doesn't even bruise your fingers if they end up in the wrong place.

Only draw back with leader controls is that it is a little slow, and acts up if the guides get bunged with sap, partiuclarly pine, spruce saps.

The paw would be a second choice. I would tire very quickly with the 'jamming the knee' to steady the log technique. What a ball ache.

Posch have the fixomatic system which I really like. Not used the other types much though.

Is that the 2 piece blade setup, and you release a clip that allows the bottom half of the blade to drop down first and clamp a log? Maybe the system has been updated, but I always wondered what the clamping power was like, Is it hydrualic or gas strut?
