I remember seeing a program about how the Asian honeybees allow a hornet into the nest and then surround it and suffocate it before it can alert the other hornets and how European bees because they haven't evolved with them attack one by one.

They don't suffocate them. The bees surround the hornet and begin to vibrate their wings, this creates heat. The bees can tolerate a temperature about 2 degrees higher than the hornet and so can kill the invading scout. This does only work with a single scout, if the scout escapes, then it will summon the rest of the hornets from its nest and the bees are doomed.
