  1. I think the scouts’ can argue they’re burning wood fuel not waste as it’s for heat and cooking?
  2. I’m looking for advice buying a bigger saw. It will spend more than half its hours milling mostly 16 to 24 inch oak and ash at least for the next few years and a few days logging up 20-30 inch ash. Thinking of a 661 or 500i?
  3. Agreed. Worst year ever and they love beech.
  4. Agreed re kids and lids - though when an indoor wall is busy and they’re small I’ve put them on occasionally. To be fair to the instructor / wall, I suspect she was the only person who had ever got stuck like that - she was pretty skinny and 3 inches shorter than the next shortest in reception class - and by six months later she was too heavy to be able to recreate it. Love being outside with them.
  5. Snagging spooks me - maybe the main reason I haven’t taken to climbing trees. 15 years ago my daughter went for her first climbing session at the local sports centre aged 4. Too light to trigger the auto-belays by just leaning back, the instructor asked her to turn round and jump off the last foothold to get it going. It worked the first couple of times but the third time she caught the back of the helmet on a hold as she jumped and was strangled by the strap. The poor instructor raced up the wall unattached to pick her off as her eyes rolled up white and she started fitting. Didn’t do any harm or stop her becoming a competitive climber later, but they stopped putting kids in helmets on the auto-belays soon after.
  6. If you decide to get pigs in the future, I’d recommend Oakland Pigs not too far away as a source of piglets and knowledge. They used to run courses and they maintain an excellent book with everything you could possibly want to know starting out keeping pigs. I had them three times so far clearing ground over winters. Great fun and super effective. Message if you want more info - I’m just down the road in Cuckfield. VERTICAL MINI MILL - Chainsawbars WWW.CHAINSAWBARS.CO.UK Is it the small log mill (cuts parallel but doesn’t clamp the far end of the bar), or the vertical mini-mill? I’m interested if it’s the small log mill. Thanks!

  10. We finally got going on the mill(s) this month and I'm hooked. 😀 Many thanks for all the tips and encouragement. One 3 foot and 2x 6 foot logs done so far - and 30 feet to go that we've painted up till winter. Insert
  11. Many thanks Jamie. MyForest looks like it has what I need - and QGIS seemed well past my tech capacity.
