This thread is probably on enough of a tangent, but if anyone is interested in why that customer who seemed really keen never got back to you, how to tell if someone is going to accept your quotation, or even why some forum members are desperate to be seen as the one to call out what they suspect is BS, we should have a thread on the subject.

I could also explain why scotspine is desperate for us all to wake up and see the massive imaginary conspiracy theory around Covid, but that probably needs its own thread.

I would enjoy a thread on this subject.

It would be a little mean (and pretty unethical) to explain Kev's posting style or comment on Scotspine posts; that part was a little tongue in cheek.

Could be interesting to discuss why some of the stuff arbs put on their websites actually put off potential clients, why really enthusiastic enquiries usually go dead, and how you can generally use a basic understanding of how people make decisions to your advantage.

Just to be clear, this isn't some kind of underhanded promotional technique. I'm not promoting any service, and I'd actually go as far as to say that I don't want any Arbtalk members as clients. I'm here as a former Arb who now does something very different for a living.

@retiredbullshitter - classic micro aggression and victimhood. Haven’t you got a chapter in your book which covers this?

Just leave it pal, move on, live your life.

Haha, you are a little out of your depth.

Anyway, you are quite right, I'm not going to waste another minute on helping you prop up your fragile ego; you'll have to sort it out yourself.

I shouldn’t take the piss, but I had a business meeting with @Retired Climber and @kevinjohnsonmbe earlier tonight.

These are genuine pics from Kev leaving.

I'd be a little more picky about who I let on the yacht mate. You've got to draw the line somewhere.

@kevinjohnsonmbe just to be clear, I'm not saying I have a yacht, neither could I afford one. I hope that's clear enough for you.

    Change khriss to Retired climber…

Oh come on. I disagreed with you on the VAT thread and ever since you've had a little dig on just about every thread I've posted on. Do you actually have something to say, because the above is just juvenile and, lets face it, a little embarrassing.

Let's think of Khriss as the hypothetical man on the Clapham omnibus. Based on the post we are discussing, do you think he's capable of analysing data and coming to a reasonable conclusion?

This is by no means unique to arbtalk. You’ve just summed up the internet

Who cares what you bill, there is no need for all this cock swinging ego crap on what was an interesting thread. I've been off AT for a few years, I've missed some of the regular peoples story's and opinions but the new breed see ms to have a lot to say when they don't need too, like they have to have the last word.

It's not just this thread, it's in most of them.

We were having a perfectly interesting debate about VAT until it got dragged into nonsense by someone with nothing to say.

Anyway, VAT, anyone who isn't registered, get yourself registered. Businesses aren't supposed to pay VAT, the end user is.

    I didn't "ask", you stated.

I called you out on it because it's horse shite which you seem to have now acknowledged.

Sorry, I didn't realise someone with a massive chip on their shoulder was going to pick through it to try to make themselves feel better. You can see as well as anyone else that what I wrote was ambiguous, you read it one way, I read it the other. The point I made is still valid, and you got to try to pretent to be clever for a few minutes; everyone's a winner.

Mmmmmmm, some call it detail, some call it BS....

You clearly and unequivocally said you have tens of thousands of £s worth of VAT awaiting forward payment per ¼ to play with as you like.

    I'm calling 🦣💩

I can't believe I'm bothering with this, but if I was deliberately bullshitting you, why would I then clarify that I actually take a lot less than it may have seemed when you asked?

A retired climber with 10s of £1000s of VAT per ¼ ‘to play with?’  Whilst working part time in garden shed?

What are you doing importing guns, drugs and girls?

Sure you haven’t over sharpened your pencil??

Blimey, I add a bit of detail to make a point and look what happens.

Just to keep you in the picture, no, I don't take 10's of thousands of VAT per quarter, but do per year. Sorry for not making that as clear as you'd like.

I've explained what I do on this forum before, it probably wouldn't be difficult to find.

Please yourself but the reason you’re not getting into it isn’t that I’m too thick to bother reasoning with.

If I gave you that impression I apologise. I'm not suggesting for one minute that you are too think to reason with.

Basically, young lad and i were shovelling huge volumes of chip, i smoked rollups heavily at that  point, he were coughing his lungs out n i was alright, he said he'd never felt as bad. Nicotine  does kill a lot of bugs, often used by beekeepers in their hive smokers. NOT that i advocate smoking ( I dont now, thankfully 😣)  k

This type of thinking is the reason we need to listen to the scientific community when it comes to things like Covid. The population generally doesn't have the brains to make their own decisions.

Short term pragmatism. Longer term, you’re arming an enemy. Most importantly, some people choose to act morally rather than just on the numbers. I imagine all you’re hearing is the siren song of the pauper and loser but there are plenty of people who really are happier having less money than they could have.

I'm not even going to dignify that with a reasoned response. The fact that the world scares you isn't my problem.

Yep fair points. I like to enjoy my work too (hence my lifestyle choice comments above) and I guess some elements of the job carry a benefit to me that isn’t just monetary.

Me too. Working for me now usually consists of sitting in the office I built in the garden for a couple of hours, doing stuff that I enjoy. I'd quite enjoy doing most of it for free, so doing it whilst charging for it is ideal for me.

Partner in a firm. Lots of big ag clients round these parts.

Ultimately, if my firm can pull in what I want it to whilst not being VAT registered then to me it makes sense not to be.

Part of the reason why Maggie Thatcher’s slant on monetarist economics didn’t work as well as she’d hoped is that she miscalculated the level at which people would want to earn more money and be taxed less on versus earning a bit less but spending more time at home or working less. But I digress…

Ok, yes you are right, you'd expect a partner in a decent sized firm to be able to offer a better level of advice than the poor bloke who sits at a desk all day doing 'accounts'.

I'm with you on the digression. My posts may come across as money hungry, but that's because I want to maximise the profit I make from every minute I work. The more I make when working, the more fun things we do when I'm not working. I have a young family, and typically work 2 or 3 hours per day.

Lifestyle comes first, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't maximise your income whilst working. Quite the opposite in fact.
