Some years back, a customer regailed me of the story of the RR Sport being released. He had been out in his existing 3yo RR and decided to bob in and have a look. He had seen to his pigs and birds, rubbed off a few logs then mended a tractor before going to the dealership. He circled the Sport in the show room, in combats, rigger boots, muck, dust and oil. He noticed a gaggle of well dressed sales sorts, they noticed him too. After another few laps of the car and opening doors etc, they hadn't moved so he approached them. "How much is the new Sport?", he asked. "Why? Do you think you can afford one?" was the response. "I paid you cash for the HSE last time and now I'm off to your neighbours who might appreciate the business!" He demurred and turn and strode out! He said that there was a sudden scraping of chair legs and a rush after him but he just put a hand up and told not to waste their time as they had missed their chance through arrogance!

Staff at a franchised main dealer actually said "Why? Do you think you can afford one?"?

I smell an embellishment in this story.😉

Having had a lifetime experience of working within local Government, I dispair of Council/Governmental double standards, where the pay blind-eyed lip service to their own staffs behavouir, work ethics  and compliance to standards, but "holier than thou" standards to any private sector operator, that is precieved as a threat to their operation. And this is so pervasive and insidious as to be impossible to get a grip on. Dont do as I do, but do as I say basically.

I did however know honest hard working individuals working within various public sectors, but the lazy rascals go undisclipined for a lifetime, which pollutes the whole organisation.

    My boiled down essence of working for the Council or any Government department, an Orwellian type comment perhaps, but like most all of Orwells observations, so so true;

    "Lets all pretend  .  .  ."

    that we are working hard

that we are actually working the hours we are claiming

    thet we are maintaining equipment

that we are not abusing equipment

thet we are not taking needless shortcuts

that we do not approach every single person task "mob handed"

    etc

    etc

    etc

Some time ago I watched a team of council workers lifting the crowns of some trees on a small patch of public land just over the road from my office. 3 trucks and 6 or 7 blokes spent most of the day there and did (without a single word of exaggeration) what I would have expected to do on my own in about 2 hours.

Edit. And don't even get me started on their technique. One bloke drives under the trees whilst the other stands in the back of the tipper with a pole saw.

Although i do agree with that to a point some peoles opinions are far more valuable than the opinion of others.

For example, I will give eggs opinion on how to install a water pump/supply far more weight than say your opinion. If your opinion is down right garbage then theres no problem whatsoever in calling it out.

Opinions only have value if they can be backed up with proven repeated, I was going to say science but I know a lot of people are scared of that word so maybe proven experience will do.

Unless someone is asking you what your favorite colour is, in that case yeah, you can respect and value their opinion.

    IMO of course. :)

You need to consider the context though. This is a 'chin-wag' thread posted to give members the opportunity to post their opinions on recent news events. Varied opinion, right or wrong, is the threads 'raison d'etre', and has little or no consequence.

Obviously, in threads concerning technical matters, I completely agree that some opinions carry far more weight then others.

Opinion, hmm. Earning a decent wage does not change someone's class, would you agree?

Calling Aslef members out over an RMT strike isn't right, but people believe this nonsense. Yes, Aslef members have taken to the picket line recently, but that isn't what this RMT strike is about. Not egotistical, just the facts.

I agree that earning good money doesn't change one's class. I think I actually 'liked' the post in which you originally said that.

However. I also agree with @trigger_andy that what you seem to think as good money is firmly in working class territory anyway, therefore making the point somewhat moot. In my mind, anyone on the kind of money mentioned is only a few pay cheques away from destitute, not 'on good money'.

I don't know enough about the RMT strikes to have a worthwhile.opinion on the matter, but do take your point.

In the grand scheme of things it doesn't matter, but when people are spouting bollox, and more so, when they believe that bollox to be the truth it needs putting right. Or does it...

No, it doesn't. You will never put it right, and it's only bollox from your perspective anyway. Technicalities can 'technically' be wrong, but stuff like this is just opinion, based on life experience and beliefs. My opinion is no more valuable than yours, and yours is no more valuable than anyone else's. To think someone's opinion needs 'putting right' seems a little egotistical.

    I certainly wouldn't let it bother you.🙂

Agreed, but when ones had a right night of it and someone is spouting bollox about it it wears a bit thin.

If you take it to heart every time someone talks bollox on the internet, you are in for a rough ride. Why on earth does it even matter?

Is it all about money? There's some landed gentry (who are surely upper class) earning less money than a kfc wage

Either way, "you is what you is" we all came into the world screaming and naked, and some of us will leave in the same way too :afraid:

It's not all about money. Class is about influence. Money is often a by-product of influence, hence the link.

Gone very quiet for us. Also now struggling to get the money on jobs that we need. Have tried lowering my prices and that hasn’t helped. We have stayed relatively steady up until this month. We have 4 or so weeks ahead but not many new enquiries coming through.

Lowering prices won't help conversion rates. If anything, put prices up.

That is a funny video mate I should contact him . Retired climber you're right I can't get blood out of a stone but this company has some serious backing so it will be interesting how far they will let it fall . I can't believe there is no issues for directors . Surely if they are made to go bankrupt it would affect further business .I am asked if this has ever happened when getting finance or insurance ect . Is it a question wit no real consequence?

A company can't go bankrupt. Is the debt at a level that would make Phoenixing a consideration, or it it more of a nuisance amount?

Well, that was a much harder job than expected!

Not much spare rod, so I tried a fine taper about 12mm long and that was enough for the die to get a bite onto the brass and pull itself in. Used parafin as suggested as lubricant, but still found it quickly jammed if I wasn't careful. Could only manage about 1/8 of a turn, then backed off 2 or 3 complete turns to clear the cutter. Seemed as though the brass cuttings jammed inside the cutter instead of peeling off. For the second thread, I lightly filed the rod all round to reduce the diameter by about 0.1mm and that seemed to help.

I'd thought about buying a good quality 10mm die instead of a 'cheap set', but had thought that would be fine for brass. Now regretting that. But that's life!

    Thanks again for the advice.

    Looks good. Nice job.

  11. The price of everything goes up.

I remember when it wasn't particularly easy to get tree work insurance. I doubt insurance companies even want to cover tree work

Although you can refuse to pay for most insurance, you have to have Employers liability insurance, so can't refuse it, as such.

There have been some interesting behavioural economics studies on the subject of 'high risk' insurance which explain the problem of such things for insurance companies.

It was not fun... I am not one of them people that are naturally good with heights. Up a tree i do not mind as i trust the gear, but just standing on a roof i do not like at all especially as it is about 26 foot high.. Not much more and i can just revert to climbing the tree and taking it down in bits..

    john..

Try not to kill yourself; if you do the HSE will have it down as a treework fatality and we'll be discussing climbing on 3 ropes.

    Whoa whoa whoa...

I never slandered ANYONE. I have not said a bad would about Skyland's and nor would i.. I came on here for advice really then discovered a load of argumentative persons that seemingly cannot understand that the onus is on the vendor to deliver the item and not for the buyer to go chasing couriers...

    FOR THE BENEFIT OF DOUBT. I am not saying that Skyland's have done anything wrong at all. I was surprised, as i have never had this before, BUT, they acted quite properly in stating that;

"Hi, In regards to the delivery instructions we cannot guarantee that the courier will only hand the item over to one of your staff. Do you have an alternative address that we can ship it to?

    Regards
    Mark

This is VASTLY better than sending stuff out not caring whether it gets there or not..

So NEVER try saying i slagged off Skylands as i did not..

On the subject of couriers they have a contractual legal responsibility to the SELLER [it is nothing to do with the buyer] to deliver the stuff, and that includes following the delivery instructions given to them, INCLUDING handing stuff into the stores and not merely dumping it on the road outside where this is specified.. That, is legal FACT.

    john..

If you back pedal any harder you'll fall off your bike.
