  1. I don't think it's Mick. Proper attention paid to punctuation, which takes several members off the list. Could be me, I suppose. Any guesses?

What if we had a local farrier knock one together out of cast iron, would you be interested then? Speaking of new gear, how about these for spicy little slings... Skinnier than my pinky, 49kN... didn't get a photo, but there was another one only slightly fatter, say an index finger, 100kN...
  3. ...by labeling Zelenskyy a dictator. Absolute f*cking fruit loop. Well, that's the US out of the game. Europe really needs to pull this one out of the bag now!
  4. I wish you'd learn how to use apostrophes. Anyway, neither the EU nor NATO are responsible for Russia invading any part of Ukraine, at any moment in time. But, in the interests of fostering discussion, lgo ahead and tell us why they are.
  5. Not so. It is an approved technique, especially among circles where redundancy is favoured. Your wheels will be fine. At the risk of offending some people... leave your fattest groundie in the vehicle when using it as an anchor. It works for stakes, pickets, hedgehogs, ice axes etc... a nice reliable "meat anchor". Every little helps.
  6. Have you tried a sling through each wheel, equalised, sideways on; instead of through the towing eye or the ball hitch?
  7. Where are we going?

Struggling to think of a place where a locked maillon wouldn't be superior, unless you've got 4 or more simultaneous directions of pull... given oval and triangular maillons. Replaceable ring on a sewn loop or spliced eye for a cambium saver... removable bridge ring? I don't think the "permanent" attachment should be emphasised, the spring pin is very easy to open with any thin-nosed bit of metal, some people could probably open it with a particularly gnarly and unbitten thumbnail (so not me). And the spring pin is captive, unlike the removable screw on the aluminium green or black version, so I'd be happy to open it up a tree...
  9. You heard it correctly, he's getting his talking points straight from the Kremlin. Trump is still a Russian asset, the same as he has been for decades. The only thing you need to appreciate to get it is just how monumentally stupid everyone who voted for him is.
  10. Back in the Alps I would be dealing with minus double digit temperatures all the time, certainly when playing up the mountain but often down in the valley, too. Minus 25 by the front door one year. But I have never felt as cold as a 3 degree damp day here in Ireland. It cuts right through you.
  11. I've just been given this to play with for a little while. Anyone got one? What do you use it for, what don't you like about it? Why do we need them? Why don't we just use [insert alternative from 30 years ago]?

    ArbDogs? Pics!

Yeah, I doubt I'd have been able to bite my tongue. I love an opportunity to be holier-than-thou when it comes to dogs.

Who's voice? Hers, the dogs, yours? Must have been a balancing act between lecturing the woman about responsible dog ownership and remaining sufficiently demure to be awarded the job. I'm not sure I'd have won the job.
  14. Without googling it first, my gut instinct tells me to scrub them with plain old vegetable oil first, then have a go with fairy liquid and warm water, rinse well, then dry them by wearing and using them, then treat them with a leather product.

More pics needed of 9 week old gsd, please. Albert, 10½ish, helpfully guards the gate while we put Granny's haflinger pony away after riding with the grandchildren.
  16. It used to be said that the US had never lost a war when they used mules for logistics... but of course, correlation does not equal causation, and all that.
  17. This ain't no wholesale operation, just a few eighths and some PlayStation's my vocation. That's exactly it, I'd be terrified of what the place could look like if I couldn't at least take a stroll around it daily, who knows who could be abusing it. It'd be different if it was just land you happened to own and weren't doing anything with, and had no intentions of doing anything with, but as soon as you start putting some effort into it... I'd have to be on it. That's just me though. Because you're a dimwit.
  18. They do say to give hedgerow plants a stiff haircut, up to 66%, as you put them in the ground. This removes the apical meristem and encourages branching and bushiness, and of course no matter how delicately you plant them you've still ripped them out of the ground and messed their roots up, so they simply can't support the entirety of their above-ground selves. These ones haven't just been planted though... they are a year in. Personally, I'd either give them 33%, or not bother until they are a bit bigger. And sweep up the gravel, remove the mypex (if present... gravel and mypex usually appear together), and replace with cardboard and woodchip, or just woodchip.
  19. I don't, and never would. I'd need to live on it. A lot of the enjoyment of your (my) own land comes after hours, wandering around in a dressing gown with a glass pipe. Mick, see previous threads. He's planting a forest and incinerating rodents.
  20. I thought a Bloody Mary these days needed all sorts of edible garnish... Tell her to up the vodka next time, and stick a wedge of lobster thermidor cheese toastie on the edge of the glass at the very least.
  21. Is that swift water rescue? That's on my list, seems a useful thing to do.
  22. As you say, they are all called "static", but are in fact "semi-static" as they do inevitably stretch a bit, unless they are a genuine zero-stretch cord made of kevlar or aramid or something. With that in mind... is there anything to be said for using a truly dynamic rope, like wot rock climbers use, for catching big falls, when you switch to negative rigging? "Dynamic" ropes can have something like 15%, 20%, anywhere up to 40% stretch... which does of course soften the blow on the anchor and is kinder to the system on the whole.
  23. But this one goes up to eleven...
  24. First confirmed kill! 3.5m, from the kitchen window to the bird table, facing me head-on. Perfect.
