  1. Evening all, just wanted to get your thoughts and input around this. I've been working for a company recently (friend of a friend of a friend) and have done a few days for them, I found out today that the guy I've been working with doesn't have aerial rescue. Yes I know, it's my responsibility to check before starting but I wanted to ask you all - where do you draw the line? When are you happy to climb with a trainee or unqualified groundy and when do you say nope, not putting my harness on untill I know someone with a half decent chance of getting me down alive is here. Does anyone know the legal stuff surrounding working at height without aerial rescue or have a link to something? Personally I'm undecided. I know that I *should* flat out refuse if its not there but if its a small tree or not particularly technical then I will override that, I'm just concerned that people are getting away with cutting corners (not providing training) and nothing is being done about it. It's the same old downside though, if I refuse to work for a legitimate safety reason, they arent going to pay the wages. Catch 22?
  2. buy a gammon joint from supermarket (morrisons quite often do offers 3 for 10 quid and you can freeze 2) and roast it. theres loads of recipes out there but my fave is boil it in dr pepper for an hour then move to the oven for another hour, last half an hour take lid off tin and glaze ham with cherry jam. best damn ham sandwhich you'll ever have. plus youll have shedloads of gammon leftover in the fridge ready for the next few days...
  3. I tend to cook twice the amount of dinner required and tupperware it up for the next day. salad, halloumi and marinated chicken with or without dressing rice, sweetcorn, peas, chicken, sweet chilli sauce pasta, tinned tuna, mayo, peas and sweetcorn If i have sandwhiches i normally have ham (from costco) with either salad or cheese and pickle. salad, boiled new potatos, boiled egg, tinned tuna, feta cheese bit of olive oil or some thousand island dressing and youre good to go. when it starts to get colder I have a jetboil so i make soups to warm up with some crusty bread. cant beat it when you've been getting rained/snowed on all morning to have a hot lunch. you can also use it to reheat chilli, spag bol and curries, i highly reccomend them! just be careful as its easy to burn the food, make sure its fairly liquid based and stir it often.
  4. found this thread earlier, piqued my interest. took the dog out for a long walk hunting some dead trees in the nature reserve and found these. standing, but for how long?
  5. Thanks Duncan. I also normally use the in ear sennheisers so sounds promising. and the fact i can get a plain set of ear plugs aswell is even better, I'll definitely be making a trip down to boots to have a chat with them this week.
  6. Someone once told me 'work smart not hard' Have I gone too far?
  7. I will be using these for other things aswell as tree work. Woodworking in the workshop, riding the motorbike and hedgecutting! Just asking if anyone had experience with them.
  8. I'm working for a woodcraft fella tomorrow, ill show him the pictures and ask if hes interested. again not sure if he'll be able to take everything but cant hurt to ask.
  9. thanks, any companies/brands you can reccomend? thank you for this, I will make a trip into town sometime and have a chat with them. Im also in the market for a new set of headphones, but they have to be fairly streamlined to fit in the bike lid and still be comfortable. does adding those inserts change the shape/how far they stick out of your ear? thats a great infographic steve, thanks haha. I have similar shaped ones i bought from the honda dealership but for 4 quid it seems like a pretty safe bet, ill grab a box and im sure theyll come in handy somewhere down the line.
  10. I would love/hate to read the specification to pass that qualification! I can't believe someone actually took time to write it down Also does anyone else dismantle the small branch work of trees with a back handle saw?
  11. Photos would be great. I doubt I will be in a position to buy the bulk load from you but I'm sure someone on here could help. If you'd be willing to sell some bits individually please let me know, I'd love to get some exotic hardwoods to play with
  12. Did you ask what 'all the time' classed as?
  13. Thanks. Yes I have the little yellow ones for riding, though I've usually got music headphones. I'll chuck a few of them in my bag and try them out tomorrow. I was just wondering if anyone had experience with some fancy ones
  14. What sort of wood is it? Sizes lengths and species?
  15. Afternoon all, I was having a think about ear defenders today and remembered a while back at a motorbike show there was a stall selling (i think) electronic hearing protection, custom moulded to your ears. I've managed to find similar stuff online but it seems to be mainly catered for shooting. has anyone used/does anyone use these for tree work? If i got a set for shooting would they offer the same protection from a saw or chipper as the noise is constant as opposed to short loud bursts. if anyone knows of some that can connect to a phone/play music aswell that would be magical. Ive got an electric topper now and although people say you dont need ear pro for them I dont really want to take the risk but having earmuffs on seems overkill! the real attraction is that they say they dont filter normal noise out, just the harmful levels. I dont understand how but if it works i'd be happy to give them a go! any insight people have got on these is welcome, Cheers.
  16. t'wasnt me there, potentially heading down saturday assuming my trucks out the garage. I hope it is cause i need to make some curtains up for the back windows! I did some work on monday putting a marquee up at a very large very expensive house, the clients were lovely and said feel free to use the pool. not sure if they meant it or not but sure enough soon as we were packed up out came the shorts and in we all got! It was bloody lovely! cant wait to get in the sea back on the bodyboard this weekend
  17. I've got a pair of altberg sneakers and they're like slippers. Nice and lightweight too. I'm pretty sure they do jungle boots too but if you're out in all weathers then stay away from the jungle ones.
  18. I recently bought the teufelberger drenaline and it runs a dream through the zig zag
  19. Thanks for all the replies and input, I'll have a snoop around Google earth to see what I can find. The meadfoot beach looks pretty good. I was thinking the chances of getting moved on are pretty slim. We wouldn't be setting up a huge campsite, just sitting in the back staring out to sea. I'll head over to stealth campers site too and see whats over there, Cheers guys
  20. so my google-fu has failed me, i was looking at getting the husky t536li but this thread made me wonder if theyre planning on upgrading/bring a new model out soon. anyone heard any rumours before i buy?
  21. Hi All, Random question for you all but i figure between everyone theres a pretty good knowledge base here. me and the mrs are going away for a weekend and staying in a hotel sunday night. We're travelling down to just north of torquay in Devon. I'd really like to go down on saturday and make the most of the weekend but I wanted to ask if anyone knew of any decent spots to stay. I've sort of converted the truck into a camper so I'd like to use that, in my head im wanting to find a hilltop overlooking the sea or a nice quiet beach we could drive onto and stay there for the evening/night then move on in the morning. are there any restrictions to this? does anyone know of any quiet spots around that area we could pitch up for the night? I wouldnt mind paying but that would suggest we'd have to be near other people and thats what im trying to avoid! anyone done anything similar?
  22. yep, turns out ive got a vertex vent not an alveo anyway. Maybe i need to get the thicker head padding so it sits more snug on my head and doesnt wobble so much. do you use a normal visor on it? I'm still not sold on Protos helmets but I could just be being a hipster and not wanting to like them because theyre cool and mainstream now. Thanks Steve - they look nice, ill see what i can find for the ear defs.
  23. Afternoon all, going through and replacing my older kit and getting some shiny new things for going self employed and I need to replace my lid - what's everyone's preference? I've been using alveo vent the past 2 years and it never seems to sit right on my head. Had a kask when I first started and it was OK but didn't really know what I was looking for, remember it being comfortable though if not a bit hot in summer. What do you think the best/most comfortable is?
  24. I get the impression that's what this is all about. Some points he makes kind of make sense but the article seems to come across as mattheck is wrong and I'm right! He says there's no evidence but how long do we need to wait for the trees to show evidence of this theory? And how do we even prove that evidence? I agree that the smaller whippy branches have a large part in dissipating energies from windload but I imagine most professionals carrying out end weight or crown reductions will not Pollard the branches or leave stobs, there should still be enough left on the tree to cope with windload. But then I'm not a scientist and I'm just looking at this from a logical point of view...
  25. Ahh that's what that means, I did read the difference in some reviews but it didn't clarify it like that, thanks. I realise I'm not going to get fantastic fuel economy from a 4x4 truck but best of a bad bunch and all that. Im changing vehicle for going freelance climbing. Something with some more space for kit in the back and some flexibility with seats and towing capacity really. I'll have a look out for the 'proper' shogun
