  1. Yes, so if you are an aboriculturist it appears to state in the second sentence that your opinion is sufficient to determine if it is 'an emergency' and falls within the exemption. Sorry but that is me maxed out on this one.
  2. Remember that there is also an obligation on the LA to revisit their TPOs. If they have not done that for this tree, and it has been in poor health for a while............
  3. See this document, esp Section 6 https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/14956/tposguide.pdf Edit - beaten to it!
  4. For some reason the youtube algorithm put this at the top of my recommendations today - I think our 15-yr old son may have been using my account! An oldie but a goodie:
  5. If/when you replace it I'd consider buying one from Halfrauds. Whilst they may be more expensive than some, they do at least honour their warranty - I have had two batteries replaced by them under warranty, one of which was almost three years old.
  6. I wouldn't be so quick to assume that - wasn't there a relatively famous Russian guy who did that sort of thing until he (unsurprisingly) fell to his death? There was/is a whole raft of them that seem to climb up old cold-war installations etc. Similarly, whilst I agree that wind increases with altitude, I climbed the Matterhorn back in the early '80s and it was flat calm when we finally reached the summit. That was effectively a ifetime ago - just looking at that image made my stomach turn!
  7. Ditto Whilst I realise the difference between a TPO and Conservation Area: We were wanting to take down 4 trees in a Conservation Area, two of which were dead and two of which had significant basal rot. We sent photos to the TO and told him we were planning to take down the trees as we believed they were exempt. He replied the next day to confirm that a Section 211 was not needed, and thanked us for the heads up. IMHO it does no harm whatsoever to keep in their good books!
  8. I use a standard mesh/screen-type visor on the basic Husky lid - if it is really humid then specs can mist up, but generally I find that if I keep moving all is OK. Edit - much better than the alternative of getting sawdust in a contact lens
  9. Thanks all and yes, will do - if I manage to mill it. I only have a Stihl 066 with a 36" bar (and ripping chain) but will see how I get on. I suspect it will actually be smaller that the 4' my father has stated, but happy to be proven wrong. If that is the case I'll bring it back north with me on the Ifor.
  10. Evening all I'm heading south in a week to clear up three sycamore and a beech which my folks have had cut down in their garden - all very different from the ubiquitous spruce which plagues us here in Argyll. One of the sycamore trunks is a steady 3-4ft diameter and would appear to lend itself to milling. Any thoughts as to what it could be used for? I know the grain is usually pretty dull but wondered if it might be suitable for anything other than firewood as there is plenty of that to be had from the other trees!
  11. Thanks both for the input I had another look at the hazel section at the weekend - it is less than 3m out of a total hedge length of close to 60m, the majority being rhododendron and similar evergreens. It is nothing like a typical hedge, more of a boundary melee of greenery. I also now realise that topping it is likely to be a disaster! After previous input to this thread I think I have decided that whilst laying it as a formal hedge is within my capabilities and would be an interesting exercise in itself, it isn't necessarily going to provide what we are looking for in the short-medium term - ie a relatively dense screen about 8' high. I'm therefore intending to do a mixture of both approaches which were suggested - ie coppice and laying. The more suitable branches I will lay as pleachers (most likely those which point out towards the road and would otherwise have to be removed). The taller, more established limbs I will coppice in the hope that this improves the screening effect. I only have three stumps to work with so options are limited!
  12. That applies to much of life tbh!
  13. You say you run the stove all winter. Do you open it up at all to burn off the creosote, or does it tend to be 'shut-down' most of the time and smoulder away?
  14. Not to mention the drainage, water supply, BT and electric networks etc
  15. Yet more big brother, or is this sensible. I can think of no event in my 60-odd years on this planet that would have merited such a systen: Public emergency alerts to be sent to all UK mobile phones WWW.BBC.CO.UK The government will send people loud, siren-like warnings to alert them when there is a risk to life.
  16. Whatever he uses - definitely not varnish. Once it begins to go you have to take it all off and start again.
  17. And so it continues SNP chief executive Peter Murrell resigns over membership row WWW.BBC.CO.UK Peter Murrell has resigned from the role with immediate effect, the party has confirmed.
  18. Did FC stipulate or did they agree to your proposal/request to remove stumps? As others have said, something appears awry
  19. Have to admit my first thought was three days if getting paid on a daily rate, two if fixed!
  20. And this clown is currently the hot favourite to win the race for First Minister FFS
