  6. hi matt, would you be atall interested in any adhoc days climbing around the cb9 area? thats haverhill, let me know if so and yr day rate, many thanks matt
  7. Not sure I entirely agree that every job is about speed, [emoji848].....I totally agree tho that time is money, fair comment however personally I don't like to put myself under that much pressure because speed does become an issue then for sure but then Corners r cut and we know the rest.....I've worked with plenty of teams on the ground that have tried to fit too much into one day and come 4pm this time of year yr working in the dark and limbs ect are just being dropped rather than rigged just to get the job done........
  8. Ive always felt in this industry from Working with others and reading for lots of threads that there is way too much emphasis on speed, "he's a quick climber, fast ect" for me speed is not of the essence, I'm by no means the most experienced climber and probably we'll definitely lol a lot slower than others but if I can walk away at the end of a day's climbing I'm happy, if I have to go back another day for a couple Of hours to finish up so be it, I have a daughter and family and speed one day will catch you out and in this industry it only takes one lapse of concentration....without overthinking too much I do try each time I'm doing something up a tree to almost do a mental checklist, double check what I've done, assess what may happen ect....sure it takes me more time but I'm all to aware that if I get complacent then shit may happen, all you can do I guess! Thoughts to this guys family, sounded like a decent chap, we've all made silly mistakes and this poor guy just got unlucky:(
  9. Great thread! And I agree with all sides of the argument, I always say health of the tree first asthetics second and somewhere Inbetween what the customer wants, it's tricky because at times you'll be asked to do things Amrit know aren't ethical or just wrong, but at the same time if you don't do it someone else will, not staying that's justification for doing the job tho, it's just a balancing act coz at the end of the day we do this work because we need to earn money.....there's only so many jobs u can keep walking away from, at some point food needs to be put on the table! I think if u can do a job and finish it thinking I did the best i can to accommodate the trees needs and the customer then I think that's acceptable! Great to put this thread out there tho coz it may actually make a lot of peeps think about how they operate, can only be a good thing' [emoji1303]
  10. Spot on with yr comments mate, a real mature answer, and one I agree with totally[emoji1303]
  11. Interested to get some feedback on this question! A good friend of mine who does subby groundy work was accused of not bringing much to the party ie ground saws ect, so I put it to you all, what should a subby groundy be expected to bring to the worksite?? Personally if he turns up with all the correct ppe and a good attitude that's enough, I don't think he should be expected to turn up with his own ground saw/fuel ect on someone else's job, discuss!!
  12. Yes I get totally where yr coming from, tbh I only use hitch climber setup on my side to side now as had way too many issues like you've explained! I've resorted back to a Prussik on main line as tbh I gain more height on each pull if you get me, I was a fan like yrself and even bought the stein skywalker pulley setup but just find while it looks fancy its actually the more simple Prussik that's way more effective for me! Having said that I use the hitch climber on my 13mm side to side with 9mm michoacan knot, works great!
  13. Hi I need a basic climbing kit lolered, am based near Haverhill on suffolk Essex border, call Matt on 07796848928, thx
  14. Fair point but this is just hyperthetical talk, I was just answering the original thread and putting my thoughts out there as an example as to why perhaps people are having difficulty finding reliable staff, it's all a matter of opinion i guess......good to talk tho as this is what arbtalk is for bouncing ideas off each other.......
  15. Lol no this is self employed subbies!
  16. Yes I agree with you, but for me personally I'm genuinely just happy for someone to turn up in time lol....but in all seriousness and I get totally what yr saying it can be hard to find the right blend but for me I've found if I can get on with someone or have a laugh and feel comfortable in someone's presence then that's the most important thing for me, the rest will follow, I'd much rather have a groundie who was inexperienced but I got on with than the reverse, it doesn't take long to get someone up to speed on the ground, some of the best groundies I've had hav had little to no experience Atall and I've trained them up within a few days, basic rigging, snedding up ect, chipper management, stacking ect.....being a groundie is not rocket science but a lot of people talk it up to be almost in a way to justify paying them crap money if they are not up to scratch....I don't know it's just my take on it, my theory to it all will not work for everyone but it works for me, value yr as tag and In Turn they will value you! In answer to yr question joe, I'd pay £100 minimum for a groundie for the day and upto £130 without hesitation, £20 here and there ain't worth skimping for if u want a day of good productivity!
  17. You've hit the nail on the head, hallelujah! It's all about building relationships, we all know tree work is hard physical work so why would you pay someone a pittance of a wage, money is a motivator I don't care what anyone says, there seems to be a certain amount of greed to, it's false economy to pay a groundie shite money a day coz all he'll do is drag his feet all day and productivity hoes out the window! All I expect from a groundie is for him/her to just turn up on time, that's a good start then build the relationship from there but if you start by paying them peanuts the relationship won't last the day let alone the future! Stop paying yr groundies shite money peeps and recognise tree work is hard and without them you can't do yr job and if they are useless but you get on work at it b4 ditching them! 58 people in two years....no sympathy!
  18. Ive e found in most cases it is! Not an exact science tho lol
  19. as ive always said in the past and always had good feedback, if you want someone who is not going to stand around on thier iphone all day you gotta be prepared to dig a bit deeper into those pockets, i don't care what anyone says, if you pay peanuts you get monkeys! regardless of what qualifications someone has, pay them a decent wage and from experience you'll find they will be more willing to learn and work the way you want them to but most of all they will value their job more and you'll spend less time chasing your tail trying to find someone who's decent and reliable, moral of the story and its worked for me is stop trying to save a tenner a day here and there and pay a decent wage and most yr staffing problems will be solved!
  20. £70 day rate self employed with experience and tickets?? Are u serious?
  21. Thx very much indeed, some, Good points raised! [emoji1303]
  22. This tree clearly needs to come down b4 it flattens the houses right near it, my question is what is the fungi? Looks like King Alfred's to me, thanks for yr help guys and what part of the tree does this fungi live off, dead wood? Canopy looks pretty good, plenty of leaves and no sign of die back on any branches tho clearly the trunk is in a bad way, checkout that crack!
