  1. There seems to be a lot of things that affect chip size as well as the screen. Engine power, infeed speed, stress control, blade sharpness, blade cutting edge angle, wood being chipped, moisture content, chipper clearances, wear and even the blower can beat the chip into smaller pieces. We had one chipper that produced a fairly good imitation of G30 through a 80 mm screen

    80mm screen? Holly crap......

I was advised to use a one inch baffled screen (belt discharge, not blown)

    Massive difference....

  2. Of course - however drying wood with a moisture content as quickly as possible is down to basic physics, therefore the smaller the volume of wood in one mass the faster it will loose that moisture.

Drying and handling timber in approx. 1m3 containers is more accessible to the majority of firewood producers, however there will always be exceptions.

Drying in log boxes is probably the optimum method of handling firewood if you can afford to invest in the setup and the annual roundwood requirements in advance.

I buy scabby old broken boxes from the local farmers, max £5. Strip every second board, and use the boards I take off to strengthen the boxes at the ends, and base if needed.

Takes a wee while right enough, but its a rainy day job.....

  3. Thats the great thing about firewood there is no right or wrong way to do it as long as you end up with a good dry product that drys at the speed you want it to.

No two people do it exactly the same.

That's the great thing about life.

If we were all the same, the world would be a boring place.

  4. You are barking up the wrong tree - if you want wood to dry fast - no more than 1 metre blocks - no ifs or buts. Good luck.

I use 1.7 cube log boxes, and the wood drys fast, no ifs or buts.

I also use a Posch Packfix, making 1.6 cube nets, and the wood drys very fast, no ifs or buts

  5. Looking at G30 wood chip, it seems to vary in size and shape, i thought G30 was meant to be all roughly the same size, with a surface area of 30mm square.

Does that make the overall size approx 6mm x 5mm?

Or do i have this all wrong?

  6. I'm burning my way through a pile of larch. Hopefully get some more in the future, prefer it to hardwood even if it does burn a bit faster. Gets the temp up nice and fast and my burner seems to prefer it to hardwood.

Got some green laburnum any good when seasoned?

    Laburnum burns very well.

  7. Italian Comafer did reasonable quality but I gave up when price dipped below £200 per tonne.

No offence, but a Comafer press is not exactly regarded as a quality press within the industry.

Ideal for a joinery workshop looking to compact there waste, but no good for a high quality producer

  8. do you have a tacho fitted to your truck for that trailer?

they had a blitz round perth, put 1 guy of the road for 3 weeks till he got a company card sorted.

If your truck/vehicle has seats in the back, i.e a crew cab, it is classed as a "dual purpose vehicle" and is tacho exempt.
