Wanted oak for milling, up to 40 inch dia.I work on a 50/50 basis me standing the cost off the milling. Within 100 miles off Derbyshire.

I would leave it,as it is most likely going to be chopped out in the later stages,as in the beam being dressed to go into a building.
-
Apparently it is not good to include sapwood in beams,as pointed out to me on arbtalk.someone pointed out that their was minimal sapwood in a beam I had cut.

Get a circular saw to them trimming the sap wood of leaving you with nice heart wood only.presentation is important.
I always dress the timber removing defects.

It is in a farmer's field and I can mill it if I want.my plan is to cut the root ball off, clean the stones out and take a test cut.
Unfortunately someone has had a go at burning it.And it looks as if it would be rewarding with the timber, but at what cost it seems to be very hard timber.

It's not easy to tell you where to section the tree for milling.it depends on alot off things.what it is being used for, trunk diameter going up the trunk. The aim is to cut sections off the tree with the diameter the same at each end or similar.theirfore getting more out off the tree.I find around the nine to ten foot mark I can cope with, lift and move on my own.

I get the head aches,no nose bleeds.that's has made me think I need to do something about it before it gets to that stage.
