  1. Hi Simon I like the clever use of books for the bench ends, normally reserved for owl perches! I think your daughter will win 1st prize
  2. Hi Here's a recent commission, a 5' seahorse bench using an elm board as the seat and macrocarpa ends. I made an elementary mistake with the first seahorse on the right, cutting off the rear of the head before I'd established the nose part leaving it too short and stubby but the customer likes it Cheers Tony
  3. Thanks Ian. Its macrocarpa finished with natural colour Ronseal decking oil. Here's the earlier pair they bought and a tallest to date (4'), spare one! Cheers
  4. Thanks for the compliment Steve! A local disabled group made the plaques and in return I supply them with slab off-cuts which they use to make clocks and things. I'm all in favour of collaborations as they open my work up to a wider audience. Cheers
  5. Hi Here are a couple of big herons I carved for a local primary school's 40th anniversary. I have now supplied 4 herons to this school, 2 as retirement presents. The school name is Anagh Coar which is Manx for heron of the marsh. Cheers Tony
  6. Hi, this information is courtesy of scottishwood.co.uk "Elm will last almost indefinitely when placed in water or below ground level (although it is not durable at ground level). " Of course I'm not sure that this also applies to English elm as we all know Scottish wood is tougher and harder than English wood
  7. Please be aware that this chipper advert Jensen A530 Di Chipper identified by John Sills on arbtalk facebook is a scam, albeit a very clever one using a fake ebay mirror page If you click the ebay link below it initially goes to ebay then links to a mirror image of an ebay page but with a different address. (http://garden-patio-furniture-xsj55j1e.other-garden-furni...) It first goes to a page with aaa-insch 205 as the seller then flicks over to another fake page minty_tom 747 Cheers Jensen A530 Di Chipper | eBay
  8. Thanks for your input Steve and Dean Here are a couple of pictures of the bark and the butt. I couldn't see any orange colouration in fissures but I'm going to assume its Turkey oak. The customer can pay for its haulage to my yard or she can keep it as a 60' lawn ornament. Cheers Tony
  9. Thanks Steve, I'll get a picture tomorrow.
  10. Good evening I've been offered this large oak trunk, about 60' long and 36" at the butt. It has a clear stem of 7m before any branches. I have about 10m of similar diameter turkey oak in my yard and I'm keen to avoid adding to my problems! It does have a much narrower sap wood to my original turkey but the long clear stem is ringing alarm bells. Anyone care to put their neck on the block so to speak? Cheers Tony
  11. Hi Unfortunately I live on the Isle of Man which is great for about 4 weeks of the year when the motorbike racing is on but not so good when you need problems like this fixed! I can buy a 42" bar and chain for £180 which is still less than the cost of hiring someone in and that may be the better route. The first couple of boards look promising albeit with a big rot hole! Cheers
  12. Hi Unfortunately I got 2 boards cut and then ran out of bar length on my 660 - 36" to cut any more of the log. I need to find/borrow an 880 with a 48" bar to cut any more. Will update you when its cut. Cheers
  13. Hi Mark Approximately £1100 each plus the timber - how many do you want? Cheers
  14. Hi Mark, I'll ask him today and update you. Cheers
  15. I gave a friend of mine (Graham Hall) some slabs of spalted beech and this is the result! The largest one is 24" wide and was, apparently, " a right b@stard pain in the ass" to turn! He uses a VB36 and has turned 9', 10"x10" oak beams into columns for an extension - impressive given the weight. He has a facebook page, Artforms from Nature, if you want to check out some of his other works. Make an old man smile and Like his page! https://www.facebook.com/Artforms-fr...58867/?fref=ts Cheers

  17. Peterson Portable Sawmill | eBay Warning signs: 1) Library pictures 2) No feedback as a seller 3) Has been bid up to £870 by a 'buyer' with 0 feedback and 100% activity with the seller... I have asked for actual pictures and engine size details but suspect I won't get a reply. Cheers Tony
  18. Hi Mark I guess it might be this one? Jonsered bandsaw Woodmizer lumbermate forestry sawmill | eBay
  19. Following the I'm bigger and heavier than you discussion on my earlier post I had no option other than to use Steve as my model
  20. Ok, there are 3 butts, 28" to 36" max width and 160,170 and 190 long. The shorter butts are heavily burred all round the trunk. I'll take a few slabs off the shorter ones to begin with to see what they are like and put some pictures up, once I've finished my Valentine bear orders. Cheers Tony
  21. Hi Mr Big Beech and Punk Mark and Gobby Steve:001_smile: I'll measure the logs tomorrow and update you on lengths etc. What thickness of boards are you needing? Steve, I have some burrs that I cut off the trunk before I realised I could take the whole tree and will get some pictures for you tomorrow. I'll check out courier costs as well and hopefully they won't be too expensive. Cheers, Tony in the Isle of Man for the avoidance of doubt:biggrin:
  22. Mr Rover is indeed correct although I did give a pretty blatant clue in my OP! You win a small burr please send me your address to claim your prize!
  23. Hi Mark I'm going to try making a side table of sorts but I suspect it will be a triumph of form over function - I'm more into chainsaw carving but need a break from owls and bears! The friend with the big lathe is planning some special piece of work with the 9" slab - I can barely walk it across the ground never mind lift it! Do you do bowl turning or lathe work? If so I'll he happy to send you some blanks FOC if you cover the postage. I have 3 bigger stems still to mill, around 9' by 3' and big elm burrs but I'm haven't figured out the best orientation for the first cut through the burrs. Cheers
  24. I opened up a manky beech log and found this beautiful spalted beech! I managed to get 4, 3" thick boards and a 9" slab, about 26" wide and a metre long. The big slab is going to a friend who has a VB36 master bowl turning lathe so I'll put some pictures up of the finished works. Unfortunately the 56 miles between the Isle of Man and the UK can make postage prohibitive but I can cut smaller blanks if anyone is interested? Cheers Tony
  25. Good evening everyone Here is my second dog ever, a Christmas commission. He's about 2.5' tall and carved from macrocarpa. Criticism, constructive or otherwise welcomed Cheers Tony
