  1. We have a 55hp compact at the moment. The problems I have are the lift on the loader (500kg max) and also the rear hydraulics can barely lift our log splitter. No problem with pulling power it's just not heavy enough to happily handle heavy implements. Don't want anything very big as all gates on the farm are narrow and sheds are not very big. We can get by with the current one but if there is something perfect out there I would rather change sooner than later.

dependent on budget maybe something like a ford 4000 , 5030 or ford 4610 with a loader or 5610 something like that not a bad loader tractor and the later two will easy lift a 3 furrow plough tow a fully loaded trailer run the splitter etc

  2. My dogs are more intelligent than most humans.

Last year a cyclist came through my cordon and went out the other side badly shaken and covered in bandages lucky to be alive, unfortunately that is the only way they will learn.

Cost me about £2k and my insurance company a good deal more.

BTW...contrary to popular belief, whatever you do, whatever measures you have in place, you will still be to blame to some degree. The courts just decide what percentage of the blame is attributed to you and what percentage to the injured party.

I very nearly jacked it all in because of it

mate thats bad what a tosser it breaks me that we spend alot of money on signs specialist ones we even have an extra guy on an do all we can to stop people some are just solid lol

  3. Best way I reckon is to let people walk where they want and let cars drive where they want. Drop stuff in the road when there's a gap, thank the drivers for stopping. Keep the chipper running and leave a couple of small branches on the pavement at either end of your working area. If people step over them stop dropping stuff till they pass. Most of them will cross over. Thank them again with a pleasant nod and crack on. Have the attitude that you are in everyone else's way. Not the other way round.

good point but trying to minimise the risk to them if they want to come into the work area they can get some ppe on like the rest of us and start dragging brash

  4. ok been doing a lot of street trees last few months. plenty of chapter 8 action signs for signs and all that. 3 on the ground 1 in the tree. 2 working with the climber and one floating between controlling traffic on the occasions that a car might need stopping while we drop a limb (80% lowing kit) then move it off the road same goes on the pavement however the pavement is closed 5m /10m stretch at a time permission is granted for the work. yet some people are just totally ignoring signs and instructions to please go round. we had one couple walk into the drop zone with a dog climb over branches and saws and under the tape on the other side.  does my nut right in apart from grabbing them and dragging them out or having a bloody door man at each end what to do like lol.

so whos got some tricks of the trade to share ? and share your stores of people just not giving a toss should bring up some funny ones :laugh1:

  5. What about bombarding the "seller" with spurious technical questions / arrangements to view / general enquiries? If enough questions are lodged and they all go unanswered or full of BS, anyone looking at the questions history will know its a bad un??

  7. Hi all, I am needing a new helmet. Having been away from the trade for a couple of years it seems the selection of head protection has widened a tad.

said helmet needs to be for ground use. My budget is around the £100 mark.

ideas please before I make the trip to my local arb emporium and get further confused by the salesman.

And please no one sudgest a nasty orange pee pot with a 'h' on the front.

    Ta very much

hi we're using the Stein Super Plasma PL and the Pfanner Protos Arborist Integral helmet no complaints on either nice in the tree as well

  8. Jeez, the Military procurement system is run by trained chimps...how does crappy kit like this end up at the sharp end with our fighting men when its not fit to deliver firewood?

tip of the iceberg my friend if only you knew :sneaky2:

  9. .....so what would be the pros and cons of using an ex army ATV springer, back from Afghanistan,(aparently it was'nt very good),for log deliveries,it self loads a tonne? and looks like an extra from Mad Max 2,a bonus i'm thinking......thoughts?

mate having drove them out in afghan in a operational environment there a load of rubbish we went through them like underpants kept breaking down falling apart we mainly used them for casualty extraction from the patrol base or to the landing zone or bringing mail and food off the chopper in the end we just used quad a trailer couldn't trust them. now whether this was a factor of environment and squiddies abusing them i am not sure but they spent most of the times on axle stands with bits hanging off them.

would they work for what you want? quite possibly i would think you may need a lot of patients with it but it could make a liar out of me and we were using an early version of them so maybe if its a newer one you might be onto a winner would be very interested to see if you get one how you get on good luck
