  1. I find it acceptable , you work together , it's a thing called helping ?!

The view on customers is that a customer picks who they think is the better of the two their choice .

If however a customer was to ask you about another Job and you handed out one of your own business cards without saying well actually this is his job I'd be a bit pissed .

Like I say at the end of the day it's the potential customers choice on who they choose to pick , infant they would probably try you both and see who's cheaper

    Dan

    Well said :D

  2. At the moment I work both as a sub contractor as well as doing independent work.

I have just bought a new van and am think about putting graphics on it to promote my services. At the same time I recognise that to some extent my services compete with that of my clients. If I put graphics on the van it will inevitably be advertising my work on my clients sites. I fully understand the potential conflicts in this situation. In this industry to what extent would this be acceptable or otherwise.

It maybe that I go for magnetic strips which would be on and off when as i want them. I can see a considerable advantage in this to help prevent advertising a parked and abandoned van full of saws in the middle of nowhere.

Your thoughts please Ladies and gentleman?

    Thanks D

Many will not mind. Just talk to your clients and if you have good standings they will not mind :001_smile: I believe it looks better when tree firms work together, rather than rivalling each other :001_smile:

There are millions of trees out there and enough work to keep everyone busy

  3. My first post so Hi to everyone. :001_cool:

I´ve been reading this forum for a few weeks now and find it very informative.

I have an opportunity to get into the firewood business and have progressed quite a lot with my research. One thing though has got me stumpted. (no pun intended)... I can see that hardwood prices are on the increase in my area and all around me there is a sudden hive of activity in the forests with hundreds of tonnes of trees becoming available every week.

I am wondering if it is prudent to buy a few hundred tonnes now, with a view to them becoming more valuable by the time they season. However, i fear being left holding the baby if the market changes in a couple of years.

In your collective experiences ... is there a "Shelf Life" for either trunks or split wood? For example, can split logs survive 3 years, 5 years, 10 years?

    Any help gratefully appreciated

The wood can last many years split or un split. It all comes down to how it is stored. For example if you stack the trunks outside on grass or a track, it will become damp and begin to rot. However, many foresters lay two logs on the bottom and then stack there timber on top as to keep the majority nice and dry while sacrificing the 2 bottom logs :001_smile:. Keep them dry and off the ground the timber will last a long time hard to confirm in years as species of tree is different.

Split logs if you can dry them with a kiln or Air drying them with a fan to reduce the moisture content to 20% and below and store them away from moisture they will last a very long time and will be ready to deliver when orders are placed

    Hope this helped :blushing:

Personally I would buy in a smaller amount that you can process and be able to sell later in the year or the next year depending on how far along the timber has seasoned :) sitting on wood for a period of 2 years is hard enough to fund as storage becomes an issue as well as monitoring the logs for mould, fungi and rot :)

I am sure many on here will give better advice :thumbup1:

  4. An oldie but a goodie, as in good example of not what to do, if I remember right he broke his leg, pelvis and back.

Has made a recovery and is now a personal trainer.

I like the way he spikes up to do the lift, comes down and spikes up again to spray paint the wounds so you won't see them. I guess he missed clipped the snap hook.

It's best to leave it to trained professionals.....

He was a lucky man :sneaky2:

Shows you the importance of having the right gear, training and a qualified first aider on the ground with a emergency plan :thumbup1:

Keep safe and tied in at 2 points always :001_rolleyes:

  5. I run a small 2 man team doing domestic and commercial tree work. lately we have had quite a bit of commercial stuff come through and keep getting asked if we are chas accredited, i am not! i have started filling in the necessary paperwork and have completed it all apart from the having access to competent health and safety advise. I know it says as a sole trader i can do this myself or appoint an employee but i honestly dont think neither of us know 100% of everything there is to know. should i seek outside help? or is there somwhere i can look to update my knowledge on current h&s :confused1:

I am Safecontractor Approved, going to get CHAS as well :thumbup1:

I would say put yourself down as competent in H&S and just say you get constantly check up on current H&S on the HSE website and the AA. :001_smile:

The CHAS helpline is very helpful they will help you out. Also when u submit your form if there is anything missing or they want more info they will ask for it and you then supply what they want. Beware you have a certain time frame to respond by when they ask for more info ;)

    hope this helps :001_smile:

CHAS is well worth having regardless saves on insurance and looks a lot better and keeps you safer :thumbup1:

  6. What is the benefit with Aspen Fuel??

Many say its easy as its pre-mixed, but its really easy to mix a 5l can with 2T oil. :001_smile:

5l of regular petrol and 2t fuel lasts me a while. And seems to be cheaper than Aspen. And my saws run very efficient on the mix so saying Aspen is more efficient and lasts longer is not true as I tried some today, and my saws spent the Aspen faster than the mix with Husqvarna XP 2T oil. :001_rolleyes:

What are your views and am I missing something here??:blushing:

Sorry if I offend or annoy anyone who is Pro ASPEN :001_smile:

  7. Really appreciate the feedback from all of you, started responding to Sloth a few hours ago, hadn't realised the rest of you had responded in the meantime.

I will take account of your responses and edit the survey before it is circulated fully tomorrow.

I will post again when the survey is live so you can input the correct responses if you wish to do so. Your feedback responses won't be taken as part of the final statistics.

    Thanks again,

    Ryan
