  2. Cheers IC trees, I'm gonna stay small and stick to freelance ground work, try and get climbing in when I can even if it is recreational. The sign writing idea came from trying to get my name out there, as well as phoning round asking if they need me and possibly flyers, though if I'm targeting tree firms rather than home owners not sure where I'd drop flyers etc, maybe suppliers shops, but it's limited Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  3. Yeah I've registered for self assessment and got my UTR number, went for class 2 NIs and self assessment option. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  4. Cheers mate, yeah well this morning I've started ringing round the firms in the next town so fingers crossed I get some on the job experience soon Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  5. No worries Ollie might look at magnetic signs, I'm only aiming at getting freelance ground work for the time being, so I'd like to target the local companies rather than domestic clients Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  6. Cheers Rupe, yeah I'm just keen to get going, thinkin of everything at once Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  7. Right wasn't aware of that but it makes sense, you might have saved me some money there! Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  8. Never thought about it like that Dan, it's good to get another point of view, I'll re think that, cheers mate Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App

  11. Cheers Marc, yeah I've got the aptitude and I always do well when I've got a keen interest in a subject. Its always hard starting new somewhere, and harder when it's a new industry you are entering into, but having left the forces after 9 years service I'm sure I've got the personal attributes to get out there and succeed, and I can't wait to get my first job in Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  12. The way I see it I'm more employable as self employed, I'll sort my own tax and NI out, won't be entitled to any payed holidays and the employer has no commitment to me so when they are finished with me I'll move on. I'm determined to get work, and I'm seeking unpaid work until such time as I've got my name out there. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  13. As mentioned at the top of the page, I'm hoping to get work by lowering my daily rate to compensate for my lack of experience, until I'm working as fast as everyone else on a skilled team. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  14. I can see what you mean, I am lookin to see how a firm works, i need to know if im to get a start in this industry. But I wouldn't be after domestic customers for a few years yet, can't see myself getting to climb for a few years yet, and I just don't know enough about the industry, can't see myself being competition for any firm out there to be honest. 15. Thanks everyone that's cleared things up a lot now i can start thinking about names and branding. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  16. If I was "trading as" could I advertise it I.e. what would I put on the side of my van? Gordon trading as "freelance tree care" or just "freelance tree care" Also would HMRC need to be notified of the trading name? Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  17. Yeah I'd love to get some work with a company even if I have to commute within reason, but no one wants to touch you with no experience, so it's a bit of a catch 22. Not sure why people aren't keen on taking on someone unpaid, it is free labour after all, not including the receipt of valuable on the job experience that is. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  18. Would help if the gov website told you this stuff lol. I do fancy having a brand name too though, I.e. I am self employed but I have my name registered through companies house as something like "freelance tree care", enabling me to aim at companies in the short term, but also domestic clients in the long term? Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  19. Hello all, I have registered as a sole trader, but would like to give my business a name. There is a lot of conflicting information on the web about such topics, and the impression I get is that you only register through companies house if you are starting a ltd company? any info would be great, Gordon
  20. Ah ok, I'll have a look into that, I've got an 18" bar on at the moment, got a 16" bar but waiting for a reel of chain so I can start making my own. I have downloaded the 560xp maintenance PDF so I'll have a look. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  21. Yeah I appreciate that, having recently passed cs38/39 I realise there is a hell of a lot more to learn than just passing the course. As a business owner would you employ someone such as myself? I am still seeking unpaid experience too, called round the local firms and had a few promising conversations but nothing as yet Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  22. Cheers Billy, so as a new in experienced groundie I'd probably set my daily rate at around £65/70 possibly moving up as my experience and speed progresses. Depending on local going rates, seem reasonable? Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  23. Other than my qualifications that is Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  24. No experience as yet, hence the discount I will be applying for the first couple of months Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
