  1. You could do what I did mate, I've been doing tree work for a year now and I've been self employed since the word go. Left the forces and got my tickets, had a similar budget to you too. I wouldn't advise getting a tipper / chipper to start with, have a think about being a sub contractor to a local firm first, that way you will get the vital experience, I was useless to start with, tickets don't give you the skills to complete basic tree jobs, they just give you a safety competency. I started off doing ground work as a Subbie, within 3 months I was climbing and was very slow to start with, but I'm better now. All you need is someone to give you a chance and to keep on at it. It's hard work, but enjoyable.
  2. Cheers Marc, would be interested to try a 12" out, surely it would be a lot more torquey due to its shorter length. Reading through the 540 threads in the chainsaw forum, just preying I don't get the problems listed after my first little bump in the road with the 540....
  3. Ha! Yeah I do get to start it straight from choke sometimes, it's amazing how they all act different on startup procedures etc. The rubber sleeve around the pull cord on mine separated from the cord, got that replaced with the vent. I'd be interested to see how it handles on a 12" bar, as I went for the 14"
  4. Doesn't sound good at all. Must be a one off though surely. Mine is running fine now but it does need a lot of choke, I always start it on half revs if it's been more than 2-3 minutes off, and usually 5 minutes ish it needs full choke. Can't say that LS+ husky oil makes too much of a difference over stihl HP, but I'm going to continue to run the 540 on LS+, due to the whole auto tune carb setup etc
  5. Yeah same, weather can't make it's mind up recently.
  6. Was like a different saw today, was cutting all day too. Can't say if it's running better because of the new vent or the new fuel mix, but it is. Cutting sweet too with the new chain, but tends to take too much of a bite on the very odd occasion, trapping the chain. Took the choke advice on board from my dealer too, and made for an overall more smooth starting sequence when the saw had been off for 5 minutes.
  7. Yeah that'll probably be the vent, did it cure the problem? Going to run the 540 purely on husky 2 stroke from now on an see how it goes, just a bit of a pain using my own fuel rather than using the firms that I subby for. At least I'll know the mix is 100% correct. Also changed the chain to Oregon 91vxl, the saw was chattering and struggling really bad in hard wood. May even get some stihl full chisel on the go in the future.
  8. Well took the saw back to the dealer today, he replaced the vent and explained that the filter and carb are oily because of blow back from the carb. If you start the saw up without the air filter on and watch the carb as you rev the saw, you'll see a mist coming out of the carb. (The spongy part of the air filter is designed to absorb the blow back deposits) So we will see if the problem has been sorted this week, however not to worry too much because of the 2 year warranty on all husky saws. My dealer also mentioned that the saw should be abused - for lack of a better description - and not to be shy of giving it full revs when working, and that they do require a lot of choke, even after putting it down for 5 minutes between use. I've also got some tester bottles of Husky's low smoke premium 2 stroke to try, to see if that aids in any way, so hopefully this thread has been useful for 540 owners / potential owners, and I'll update as and when!
  9. Cheers mark I'll have a look tomorrow and see about new parts
  10. Ha yeah 4 weeks without a saw is just not on, do you know if it's just a simple pull out and replace job?
  11. That is interesting if it is true because I phoned the dealer up the other day, will have to call after the bank holiday with my serial number and see if it is true, but can't see it being anything else other than the mentioned part
  12. That's not working mate, are you going off of the husqvarna parts list / exploded view of the fuel system?
  13. Cheers mark, might order a replacement part, it would be the plastic elbow joint before the rubber pipe that would be at fault then?
  14. Do you know if there is a modified breather available mate?
  15. ok, that's been hanging as if it would be on my harness for around 5 minutes, you can see the fuel coming out of what I think may be the breather? Correct me if I'm wrong
  16. Ok, update, think I've found the source of the leak...
  17. Yeah I've come across certain vehicle air filters that are supposed to be covered in oil, but I'm pretty certain that it's a fault in this case. Tried leaving the tank in various fuel levels but it still leaks. If only they did "courtesy saws". I'd probably be a bit more keen on giving it back to the dealership if they did!
  18. Yeah the throttle arm must be right then. Today I did notice fuel coming out from under the carb / filter / spark plug cover, after leaving the saw hung upside down for 20 minutes over lunch. Concerned that the oil in the filter is actually 2 stroke mix that's leaking. Going to clean it, hang it up again and watch for leaks in a minute
  19. 1st photo, the resting position of the throttle arm, look ok Eddie? There's quite a bit of slack before it actually takes up any revs. 2nd and 3rd Thoughts / opinions?
  20. Cheers Eddie I'll have a look at that, and cheers Ollie I'll set the auto tune again
  21. Thanks gents, yeah might take it back to the dealer, I haven't been overfilling it as I've been using an auto stop type fuel can. Puzzles me, seems a bit lazy starting when warm on occasion too.
  22. Hi all, noticed my t540xp stinking of fuel on occasion when it is hanging on my harness, engine off. As soon as I get a whiff of the fuel I know that it will be a pain in the arse starting next time I fire it up. It usually happens after the saw has been running after a re fuel stop. Any one else noticed this problem? Cheers
  23. No worries mate thanks for that, I've taken the spark screen out and I'll see if it persists
  24. While I'm here, different saw (560). Black dry deposits around spark plug, I am religious about my mixes and only mix what I need. Could this be auto tune related?
  25. Cheers mate I'll give it a try, do you think it could be anything to do with the fuel mixture? Any other 540 owners experienced this?
