Morning all. Has anyone got available to hire, a bank mower with belt rake? We need one for a job a couple of days at a time for every 2-3 weeks until mid-november ish. Tried Alviti's already and a couple other but no rake. We are in Somerset, happy to travel an hour or so to pick up. Any help help greatly appreciated. Cheers Jim

Does anybody know of anywhere in the South West that hires out shredders? I'm thinking smaller tow alongs rather than Doppstadt giant, or compost machine. Its for all those bits you wouldn't want to put through a chipper, fine hedge clippings etc we have nowhere to have a fire so thats not an option. Thanks Jim

R2 is the register of tree work operatives http://www.r2register.co.uk/home or was not sure if its still going but there is a list of job descriptions that we have put a pay scale to and defined the criteria for few of the the more open ended criteria. The idea for us everyone is either working towards the next level or happy with the money they are on, and gives me a baseline to work to when asked for a pay rise. There are several separate enhancements to add descresionary payments when someone you feel deserves more but doesn’t fit into the criteria. Fair point, and I fully understand. I have and will (future good subbies) offered a zero hour contract to help with this scenario, and get them in a uniform without breaching A35 rules for tax liability etc, it would in my opinion be better for both parties but giving essentially the same pick up and put down as required/available principles yet be PAYE and entailed to some of the company benefits.

The problem were having is finding staff not keeping them but I wouldn’t want to lose any. We are always looking to improve our working conditions in general taking the Richard Branson approach of “ look after your staff and they will look after your customers” ( or something similar). We buy them the best PPE, through a team decision, Protos helmets with SENA, air stream boots, husqvarna Technical extreme trousers. We give a clear clear progression/pay scales based on the R2 but modified for us so everybody knows when & how to get a pay rise. A 6 hour on site pricing scheme, for the bulk of our work so less rushing to get home and reduced time pressures. A basic bonus scheme on larger jobs if the guys want to work over or make up a man day etc and save time on a job we share out the saving between them. Everyone gets an extra days holiday for every year worked as a loyalty reward. Everyone gets a paid day off to the Arbshow because we think its important to keep upto date and keep an interest. Bags of overtime if wanted especially in the winter months some of our guys doubled there wages this month, through call outs and double time etc Provide training above the needs of the business to help with career progression/pay rise or maintain interest. Currently looking at a profit share or enhanced pension contribution still discussing with our accountant although both option appear to be quite straight forward. This has been developed over the years to help make it nice place to work and to stop good guys leaving. I think a sense of ownership is very important regarding breakages and lost time incidents, ( we tend to lose small items of kit on site) peer pressure is far better than management pressure so a profit share is definitely on the cards. I’m not sure I’d ever reward a subby the same way as employed staff as I think that would send out the wrong message, we just say thank you and pay them straight away, the extra 40% is more than enough in my mind. In principle I don’t like using subcontractors but with the lack of applicants to our vacancies we have little choice. The subbies that are any good either get a job ( on the books ) either with us or someone else or decide to start there own bona fide business. I have offered a PAYE job to the current subby but he seems reluctant to commit. Fingers crossed no ones thinking of leaving!

We have a middle aged lady in our village who is very prim & proper, every year we trim the the hedges in the back garden. The cottage is on a narrow lane with no pavement so we always get in through the back. Last time, she phoned to tell me " I need my bush trimmed but the front is no good so you'll have to come up my rear but be careful because its very tight".Priceless. I now find it difficult not to grin at her when I see her out & about

Hi All I potentially have a client who want to clear an area of woodland, and want to sell on the timber to recoup some costs, its a community/charity type affair so trying to be extra frugal. Approx 30-40 cube of Turkey Oak (80%) Holm Oak(15%) with a dash of Ash & Sycamore making up the rest. It will be cut at 2m lengths and brought to roadside. We had our 10 day old Husqvarna 580 BTS backpack blower stolen today. It was on Hamilton Road in Taunton, Somerset. Serial number on Arbsafe 96662960150201332015 Truck parked on the front drive working in the back garden carrying branches through to the front , left the dipstick work experience lad blowing up the front garden while we finish cutting out the back. He then, for reasons only known to himself leaves it slap bang in the middle of the turning area for all to see, it must have been like a bloody homing beacon being so bright and shiny new. It wasn't until an hour later when I told him to blow up in the back when we realised the numpty had left it out the front and discovered that some opportunist had taken this most excellent opportunity and made off with our blower into the dingy underworld of Taunton were it has probably already been sold for a £20 quick fix! Gutted, its not even earnt us any money yet. Don't expect anyone on here to see it but had to vent, "a problem shared" and all that.

Third time lucky!

I accidentally formatted the hard drive on an old laptop with baby photos etc. I took it into my local PC techie shop and they ran some "scavenging" software and managed to retrieve about 75% of photos and data. Might be worth a try?

We use vegetable oil from Costco usually around £17 for 20litres, using it in all saws for about 5 years now. Haven't noticed any adverse effects or increased costs in wear. The only down side I can see is the cold weather when it partially freeze but we add 50% sunflower oil as it seems to have a lower freezing temp, or keep a separate oil can in the cab. Not keen on breathing in vaporised mineral oil or "additives".

Could do with a tip site in or near Okehampton, 1 maybe 2 loads of chip any help appreciated. Thanks Jim
