  1. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-5412041/Father-blasts-council-witch-hunt-cuts-tree.html Just saying.... No evidence offered by the prosecution.... Mmmmmm....
  2. It's a sign of your age Ti! Those above a certain age threshold tend to hold a rose-coloured glasses view of military National Service. It was a means to an end in and of it's day - Lions, Donkeys and Dinosaurs, massed ranks of blindly obedient lemming emerging from the trenches with bolt action Lee-Enfield rifles... Its not a scenario that has any realistic useful output in this day and age...
  3. There's no place in a modern (streamlined) professional military for taking up the slack of society... Sweden maintains a national reserve in the face of the historic Soviet invasion threat and Israel has an omni-present threat from all corners of its borders. They are both very distinct and different reasons for their situations. There is insufficient capacity, nor is it the role of a modern military force, to babysit the elements of UK society that struggle to breath and tie shoe laces at the same time!
  4. to add.... Whilst the ruling elite (in a socialist system) pamper themselves at the cost of the proletariat.... There isn't a single example where this is not verifiable fact.
  5. Can't quite make out if you're running a flag up in favour or against.....? I could become a work shy (er,er,er) scrounger with this system.... What's not to like??
  6. Not so much being bothered, as having the time at the moment. Are you suggesting that 'universal' means 'universal?' That would be to say EVERY country adopts an identical 'universal' system? Anything other than that would create unacceptable (on many levels) pull & push factors which would be disastrous for all effected... Let's not leave the obvious off the table in favour of promoting a system for systems sake.....
  7. Very ‘watchable’ Mark, I hold his views in very high regard. Must get on and read the book that was a Christmas present. Bankruptocracy.... liked that! The single issue that stands to completely derail the theory of universal income, and without wanting to silo the conversation, whilst simultaneously wondering if his Left of centre position is the reason he COMLETELY avoided what was, to me, the hairy mamouth in the phone box, is immigration control. He’s too smart to have ‘overlooked’ the issue which kind of devalues his output, so far as I’m concerned, and like I say, I am a genuine fan. For example, Country A has universal income, country B is a retarded economy with corrupt government and abject poverty.... Hows that gonna play out? Like he said, got to overcome preconceived ideas and not leave anything off the table, but then, by omission, he contradicts himself!
  8. Can't remember if it was on this thread - amongst the ideological, theological, pathological, psychotic, political, social, economic, moral, environmental and just plain mental rantings of the massive..... Universal Basic Income....? Hadn't heard of it before it was mentioned on here then a day or 2 after, it was on the news about the RSA having presented some study findings and here they are: https://www.thersa.org/action-and-research/rsa-projects/economy-enterprise-manufacturing-folder/basic-income An interesting prospect....
  9. Got the FF, but always lacked the 'style!' More 'near death' than exciting was the first fuselage climb-out jump in Cyprus with a near wing strike in the AM followed by a dive on the MS Zenobia where time / depth / cylinder contents were a little messed up resulting in too little decomp.... Went on the lash after that, it seemed a whole lot safer to get loaded and have punch up....
  10. "Young Offenders" on iplayer - granted, not so much a comedy as a parody of the dreadful state of reality.... Raised a giggle or 2. https://youtu.be/b1FRCoDy5mw
  11. Bad news Mr E. I can help wondering if 17 in 1 sitting is badder or less badder than tens of thousands of deaths and injuries annually https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun_violence_in_the_United_States (still not mailed, will get wife to wrap and post, she's less busierer than me)
  12. Yeah! Get a room you 2!! You'll taking up bandwidth that could be much better exploited by pitch fork wielding firebrands.....
  13. Ummmm... Sally Army. UK ROI HQ listed as (image 1) Building looks like (image 2) What about this bad boy in the City? (image 3) some serious real estate going on there for a "charity." Some BS overheads going on there....
  14. Almost lost my Sauvignon Blanc through nasal passages at the "Oh my God" exclam... Pythonesque comedy! The prospect of continuing to pump billions £s into systemically, inherently, culturally corrupt nations is the work of the certifiably insane. To suggest it may take decades to fix (and that patience might be the key) is to ignore the inevitable, inexorable slash & burn and resultant desertification which is compounding the situation quicker than any £s can keep up. Without addressing the potential for the mass evacuation of areas that do not have the capacity to sustain human life (and the population growth which is accelerated by infant mortality rates and then further compounded by religious objection to birth control) is to bury ones head in the ever expanding sand...
  15. Try flipping the telescope.... Get a sustainable management plan, apply for a licence, harvest timber, replant and continue the cycle.... (you'll probably even find some free money floating around to help....) So far as I'm aware, a FL doesn't specify WHO does the harvesting OR what happens to the timber after harvesting. I'm just hoping this isn't a "poor farmer burdened by red-tape and profit restricted by insufficient grant funding" type thread... Otherwise I'll probably end up being a whining member of the general business community that receives NO beneficial trading advantages struggling to understand why the agriculture sector, despite having the most favourable trading conditions imaginable, still manages to moan more than anyone else.... And that would be tragedy....
  16. Forestry Act 1967.....? James Harold Wilson, Baron Wilson of Rievaulx, KG, OBE, PC, FRS, FSS (11 March 1916 – 24 May 1995) was a British Labour politician who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1964 to 1970 and from 1974 to 1976.
  17. Took a load of tired old guards from young trees at a school on Friday... As always, planted and neglected. On the plus side, the kids that were there were really interested in what I was doing so I took a few minutes to talk them through it. It went down really well and the teacher was quite thrilled that I'd spent the time (hook 'em in early!) I was there to prep for the planting of an Oak on Saturday to mark the retirement of a long standing teacher. Bit of an aside, what with tree planting not exactly being a spectator sport of much merit, I found this poem (and adapted it) (a) so I could read it out and add a bit of "interest" to the proceedings and (b) since I thought it quite well reflected the relationship a teacher has in nurturing the development and growth of our most precious little ones.... Might be of interest if anyone else is planting in schools? The Teacher’s Acorn – adapted from the original by Joseph Enright An acorn on an oak tree grew, The wind around it gently blew, The teacher whispered to him softly 'Some day you will be free To grow and be a mighty tree' 'Who'? 'Me'? A mighty oak'? The little acorn thought this a joke. Cruel autumn wind whistled round And knocked the acorn to the ground. The teacher, passing by The small acorn she did spy She picked it up, but on occasion it did fall Once, down a nearby rabbit hole. All winter long it lay inside Soon it withered and turned dry In the springtime a shoot of green From the acorn could be seen. It grew and grew, as years rolled by Soon it reached up to the sky. So it was a tale come true A mighty oak From the Teacher’s acorn grew...........
  18. ? but if she’s got big kit to cover, insurance, training to cover should she charge more??? ??
  19. No so much by appearance but rather by character, there was an email trail that was forwarded to me inadvertently where I found I was referred to as Lord Voldemort... Took it as quite a compliment, then fragged their asses!
  20. I'm afflicted (by marriage) to a Stokie!
  21. The highest ever ratings for SoP from an Arb audience! He knew it was towards the end but wanted us to sing along ?
  22. Totally agree! It's a bold statement but, I'd venture to suggest that it all started going to hell in a hand-cart when it became de rigour for government departments to recruit, train and rely more upon the business MBA / CMA rather than upon the solid, practical experience of good home grown departmental talent promoted from positions of practical knowledge into positions of sufficient influence. Once the bean counters get their grubby, excel focussed pounds, shillings and pence perspective inculcated into the very fabric of the organisation the inevitable outcome is pretending to know the 'cost' of everything but the 'value' of nothing - a la PFI for a cracking example case in point. (I present this point from both the perspective of having been promoted from doer to teller and as the ever critical spreadsheet focussed budget manager for an £11 mil/pa departmental spend through 12 cost centres) Granpa was a "Parkie" for Oxford City council and I spent many Summer holidays of my yoof accompanying him to work (again, never happen these days) which has had a profound effect on my later life and passion for parks....
