  1. The variance between testers, within the same centre, is astonishing. These se changes won’t effect us much, what with being literally next door to our MOT centre
  2. If you learn from mistakes, I must be a ‘kin genius
  3. Try again! Five letter word beginning with C, one vowel, three more consonants
  4. there are exceptions: ceiling conceit deceit deceive perceive receipt receive
  5. Excuse my ignorance, but why do you have to; identify those with an interest, draft a statement of reasons, deal with objections, inform interested parties etc, etc? If there is already an order in place and if you're not increasing the number of trees within that order, but simply updating it (introducing current maps and/or un-protecting any trees that no longer merit protection) why is it so complicated? I know that I should know the mechanisms, revoking, amending etc, better, but it seems an awful lot of fuss! I've probably got this view because our LA officers seem to have an awful lot of 'executive power'.
  6. I don't use the Planning Portal often, but I believe the notification date is the day after you press 'Submit;. THis seems to be verified by the wording - 'registered as being valid on 15th January' This correspondence appears to be more for the use in TPO applications (someones used the wrong form?), as the LA don't make a decision as such- they oppose it and TPO, or either let you know that they don't or ignore is whereas you cart on. Furthermore, you can't appeal if they don't determine or reply - you do the works as notified. If they haven't served a TPO after six weeks, crack on. There is little that the LA can do, because you have notified and there is no TPO in force.
  7. There's no i or e in the word I'd use, there is a C at the beginning though...
  8. Don't call him 'Mr' Stubby, he'll get ideas above his station!
  9. Agree on the coward part of your post, most people don't know what they'd do in those circumstances ( some might 'say' what they'd do, but that's a different matter) The real heroes in these situations are those who go forward, unarmed, because to them it seems the right thing to do, without thought to their own safety. I think a lot of teachers would naturally try to look after their students, almost as looking after their family due to the personal relationships.
  10. Maybe they want to arm teachers simply to neutralise the threat? I don't know the answer, but I'm certain the the good old boys of the USA won't be handing in the firearms anytime soon. So how do you protect against these rampages and reduce the number of deaths and casualties? Longer term you 'could' turn the schools into fortresses with metal detectors and security behind bullet proof glass to prevent ingress. I think some of the city schools use metal detectors even now, but it's got to be accepted by the public, built and paid for. Anyway, Trump has declared that he will not sleep until this is all sorted out, so maybe there's nothing to concern ourselves with anyway
  11. My first thought was, 'Who's Ivy?' Was I the only one?
  12. Interesting article, particularly the bit about one particular sycamore being measured as having almost seven miles of branches! http://home.bt.com/tech-gadgets/tech-news/researchers-new-laser-scanning-tech-weigh-trees-ucl-11364250833803
  13. So Oak (Fagaceae), Quercus and holly (Aquafoliaceae) Ilex definitely won't graft?
  14. Never say never! These photos came up on UKTC this afternoon! The photographer is going back to look again, there's talk that the holly seed started to grow in a fissure in the bark and then the oak has encapsulated it, or it might have naturally grafted to it and the holly is living hemiparasitically on the oak? Trees just love to prove the experts wrong
  15. There's little evidence available as to why he didn't act. My thoughts are that in a situation, some people will act, some people who are trained will act because of the training, and some, despite training, will freeze or not do what training has taught them. Training to go into harms way has to overcome some deep ingrained instincts of self preservation, good training should weed out those whose instincts can't/won't be overcome. Maybe in this case it didn't. I don't think that because a trained armed deputy failed to act, for whatever reason, the whole idea should be disregarded. I don't know the details, but didn't an unarmed team coach do a John McClane, running towards the attacker?
  16. I caught a bit of a radio program yesterday about the states that don't exclude concealed carry by staff. I don't think that it causes more problems, but then again it didn't go into if it prevented or reduced school shootings. It's a tough one, on one hand I think it's a good idea but on the other hand it could cause more problems. I'm undecided and just playing devils advocate.
  17. I’m not sure if birds are a major factor or not, probably more to do with the seed dispersal mechanism and quantity of seeds produced. Ive seen buddleja growing in the gutter in leaf mould (2m tall) and growing in old pointing 30 ft up the side of the building.
  18. I won’t be growing parasitically, It will be growing in, and utilising the nutrients of, decayed/decaying wood in the host tree. You’ll find adventitious roots within hollow trees themselves, where the tree is feeding on the wood that was formerly it’s own heartwood Ain’t nature wonderful (and opportunist)
  19. And ash, sycamore, Rowan, rhododendron and yew..
  20. Roughly 24% of the Swiss population own guns, yet guns are rarely used in homicides. I dont even even know what to make of that.
  21. Is ‘need a gun’ actually a problem in the US?
