  1. The cases I've been involved in made allowances, in that the work had to be carried out during the winter.
  2. Would the local authority have any choice, if all the criteria had been met and found to be applicable?
  3. I didn't mean that. In our legislation there's something along the lines of the hedge can't be reduced to a height (that the complex formula decrees) that is harmful/would kill it. This is because the owner can't be deprived of their property. So, a cypress hedge that is bare stemmed for a couple of meters couldn't be reduced to 2m, despite the formula used. Its up to the arb officer to decide how far to go.
  4. This will get interesting. When the first LPA tree officer decides that two mature beech can't be reduced to whatever height the formula decrees, what are the options? The aggrieved neighbour then takes the council to court for not applying the law? I think this may keep lawyers and courts busy for a while.
  5. Thanks, that's increased my understanding greatly. The green teeth, which will fit the pocket mounting holes, are fixed in a holder. the tooth is on a stalk which can be turned three time. Although reports by others indicate that in reality only one turn is practical. The holder is in a fixed position - so every tooths at the 'leading edge'. Although performance may be better, both in grinding and down time, I think for us this system is going to be uneconomical. Simply put, our operator doesn't take enough care as to what he's cutting. Its looks like a replacement wheel may be order, to take the available pockets. Thanks again Rupe:thumbup1:
  6. That's a good idea, its so easy to get buried under the multitude of pests, diseases and fungi. Of all the books I've collected over the years it's surprising how few I, personally, regularly reference. The Research for Amenity Trees series are invaluable and are long overdue for a reprint/revision.
  7. The TO at Huddersfield, West Yorks, a few years back, was actually very proactive towards prosecution. I'm not sure she is still there, but I know she led a number of successful prosecutions.:thumbup1:
  8. Wouldn't things be easier if all publicly owned trees were protected by TPO's automatically. Hence the burden of proof would be transferred to the accused.
  9. There's no such thing as karma. Maybe it will encourage more vigorous growth and cause his house to subside.
  10. It's a personal thing. I've climbed hundreds of dead elms and prefer them to poplars. You've probably enough experience to know if things feel wrong. I think even if you rig it just choose smaller loads and larger anchor points than usual. I never worry about my eleven odd stone making that much difference. After you've done it you'll wonder why you had any concerns. Think of it as part of your learning curve and development. Good luck with it.
  11. Have you still got it? I think treequip on here has one too. How things have changed
  12. Get me that lot for two thousand and I'll give you £500 for your trouble:001_tt2: For the .op. other than any already mentioned, anything by; shigo, mattheck, Oliver rackham, the dso series which are mainly out of print, The blue book for planning and tpo's. Mynors law of trees, forests and hedges- which is good but probably a luxury
  13. But that was back when men were men:biggrin: there's been some big changes over the last thirty years. You can't climb a tree properly now unless you've a zigzag apparently:lol::lol:
  14. Sorry everyone else,, phone skipped to .Rupes reply. Pockets need replacing, we've just received a set from global but the holes don't line up. Someone cut two damaged pockets off before checking ( not me) so we were stuffed anyway. Hopefully we can find someone to supply the more oval type pockets, although most suppliers seem to be supplied by global anyway.
  15. FSI S27D, similar issues with undoing using 3ft breaker. Just wondering now, after thinking about it, if the replacement bolts are a lower tensile strength. I noticed the wheels starting to dish out, around the circumference, so wondered if this was due to the absence of the straight teeth. How do you find the green teeth? These are the round ones that turn three times? I'm interested in how they wear, being like four times more expensive to replace. I'd go for them, but don't trust the user not to grind through rubble and stone. Sounds harsh but I know frequently teeth are renewed.
  16. Bearings, child's play:001_tt2: We changed a engine in a tracked Kwikchip in a customers garden. Luckily the old one blew under a tree, so chain hoisted it out. Took most of the day buts that's a real field repair.
  17. Has anyone got any settings for these pockets. The bolts are M16. We have, yet more, problems with the hex bolts rounding off when loosening, despite regular replacements, so suspect they are being over-tightened to begin with. Also, is there a normal configuration of left/right and straight finger teeth. Working on this machine today, I've found that the operator has substituted handed teeth all round. No straight at all.
  18. Unfortunately the offender is simply likely to have another attempt. Council legal departments seem loathe to prosecute, even at times when the offenders caught in the act. The best outcome likely is a good TO who will talk to the neighbours, not singling anyone out, pointing out how keen the authority is to prosecute. It might be a bluff, but it may just work. Good luck, but don't get your hopes up.
  19. When I started climbing, we mainly ran the 'yellow perils', they were much preferred to the Jonsereds. Your post's just back some very old memories
  20. Rob, is there any reason/cause for the lack of basal/root flare in the third photo?
  21. There's a clothesline there, but the trees grafted honestly....
  22. Tech certs reading list from Myercough Reading List.doc
  23. Should be a reading list on tha ABC website, if not I've the list at work. It's big though, can you get a second mortgage?
