Block cropping is simply planting your combinables in fields all in the same area. As different crops require inputs (fertiliser, spraying) at different times, as well as needing to be drilled and harvested at different times, it makes sense to keep all your OSR in one block and all your barley in another. It reduces time spent on the road considerably.

Understood bud . Makes sense .

Bloody hell Stubby you do not have an 80cc saw, what happened there, a nice 480, or 281 or even a 585, I am sure your other half can clamber over one more saw to get into the shed, I shouldn’t really comment as I have a 346, two 357s, a 254fg, a L65, a F70, a ms90 and I don’t even cut wood anymore.

    My " west Coast " 385 got stolen.😪

Had a sub 12 huntsman, I hated it with every fibre of my being.

Air arms are a bit bulky but a dream to shoot from 12 to FAC. If it's sub 12 S410 are cheap and short even with a moderator, FAC is the S510 but awful moderator as it's a shrouded barrel.

    Depends on budgets.

I was looking at the Daystate Alfa Wolf Safari . That is one hell of a rifle but one hell of a price !

I have a 230 which normally sits on the floor by the chipper.

I must admit for a toothpick of a saw it's pretty good but as it owes me absolutely nothing I'm tempted to have a go at it

I'll start with go F UK yourself and see how it behaves 😂. It's been a good saw and handy to leave with the chipper.

Sorry , were you telling me to " go fcuk " myself ?

    Yeah.

Thing is tho it's like mapping cars .. how long do you want it to last.

I'm a firm stand by getting a bigger saw than needed and having that for extra power.

They may even last longer as they run more efficiently , cleaner , faster burning etc . I always was of the mindset to use the smallest , lightest saw I could get away with . I do though have 50,60 70 ,90 ,95 cc saws and they are all ported .

I'm all for saw tuning however as I use some saws daily those ones I leave as standard.

For longevity I  buy a slightly bigger saw the perhaps necessary and just get used to it.

Don't think it affects longevity . My 346 was only the second one spud did ( the first being his own if I remember correctly )  It still going strong . I know I am retired from cutting now but it did shed loads of work prior  .

I’d say it’s block cropping and it’s just all the fields near the road this year. OSR is always a gamble with regards to the weather and establishment and even more so without flea beetle seed treatments after the ban.

Its not just the fields near the roads Rubin . From Lavant  village all the way up to the top of St Roches hill is OSR .

With my farming hat on, I too have seen nothing like it in over fifty years of farming.  Wheat fields decimated and hardly a Spring crop sown.  My Miscanthus contractor has not cut even one acre anywhere and he covers a large area in the North.  Pools of water, mud everywhere.  Approaching Cuckoo barley territory now. Cannot go in the woods without making a filthy mess and even winching logs out from the roadways has the same result.  At least managed to bring enough logs back to the yard to process under cover.

Can I pop your farming hat on for a second ? Round here , on the chalk , its usually barley . Crops are rotated of course but predominantly barley . Thing is there seems to be an abundance of oil seed rape everywhere this year . Is the price per ton expected to shoot up come harvest ?
