Today’s joy was winching a collapsed willow pollard out of the moat at Joseph Conrad’s old house.

I knew the last lump would be a bastard to get a rope round so I packed my Speedos.

I’ve seen a 340 that looks to be hardly used and runs well etc at decent money (150), and want a more capable saw than my 135. It’s still only for dealing with fallen limbs etc at the cave I look after, but after a morning clearing up a fairly sizeable ash today I felt like a longer bar than 14” would have been good for the main stem (which I left for now) and generally a bit more grunt/speed would have been nice.

so a couple of questions, a: is the 340 worth a look and b: is the 346 top end mod fairly straightforward and worthwhile?

When my mate came to do the climbing / felling at the weekend he managed fine with an MS261 so maybe I should hold out for one of those rather than risk spending whatever one would cost used trying to modify a saw that isn’t ideal in the first place?

ADW will tell you if its possible or not @adw but if my memory serves me at all the 340 is a plastic crank case halves machine , The 346 is metal  and much more a pro saw . I would not do it . Save up for a 550 mk2 . This will run a 15" bar with ease and an 18" occasionally . If you need an 18" all the time then a 560 or 562 which will run a 20" on occasion .

There use to be a crow on a shopping area that made a mobile phone sound was great watching people grab there phone and look at them.

I remember in the late 60s early 70s a thing called a " trim phone " came out and starlings were mimicking it all over the place .

    Two things. Robin?

Found in a big sideways stack of plant pots in the potting shed. How long until they fledge? It'll be a busy shed soon enough. Might have to compartmentalise it a little to give them some privacy.

Also, this chap has been trying to break into the house in any available high window from north west to south west. Very persistent. My guess is he had a nest here last year behind the cladding but before the window flashing went on, and now he's confused.

Might put a bird box on the window and see what happens.

He thinks the candle he can see on the ledge is some full cream milk !

Slit as soon as you get it, leylandii for me are usually good to in a year. Mind same for all woods... split as soon as you get it.

I can't comment on 3 year old logs, never kept any that long but never really had a soot problem off them

As above for me . 👍

I never defended her policies, I said I dreamt of having sex with her in a thatched  croft house on the Shetland islands whilst highland cattle watched us from the window, gently mooing.

    Is that so wrong?

Not at all,  in so many ways😀
