My son has developed a bit of a collecting / hoarding streak - which I assume comes from me He has a huge box of Ben10 figures and I used to arrange them all standing up on a shelf in his bedroom every night [there are about 50 of them!] and not let him play with them... the poor kid developed quite a complex!

You're talking about lists of contractors made available to the general public. To work for an LA you still need to get on the 'approved list', which basically means you have met the minimum requirements for being allowed to tender, doesn't mean you'll get work. Additionally, these lists are issued as part of tender documents where relevant to main contractors / framework contractors to ensure they draw on a pool of appropriately qualified sub contractors when tendering for a larger project. These lists aren't though, as you say, contractors recommended to employ by Joe Public. If you want to get on one it should be fairly easy to find on the LA website how you apply to work for the council. Here is the gateway to WCC - Selling to the Council . Simply google search your council name and 'sell to us' or 'supplying the council' or similar....

Does seem odd Pete, I'll PM you the email address of a guy you should speak to, he's quoted for mine and seems very knowledgable and the prices are good. The NFU's stance appears plain wrong. As an aside, we are a main contractor and employ insured sub contractors in construction, but we still have to have insurance. Ignore the NFU!

I climb on 11mm Aeris. I have been using a 13mm split tail on it which does work, although it's a bugger to set properly. I'm trying 9mm cord VT & a hitchclimber tomorrow.... To get round the problem of gripping the rope, I keep a Petzl Croll with a 60cm prusik loop choked onto it on my harness to use as a footloop, that way when I've had enough thrusting I can clip it on and either just stand up in the footloop and don't have to worry about pulling on the rope at all, or hold the rope in place with your foot loop and pull the climbing line outwards to advance it through the hitch. It's all very lazy but works well, advances very easily.... [Croll is a handy widget to have... it's actually a chest ascender but the same mechanics as a pantin, so unlike mini rope grabs has a krab hole at the top as well as the bottom, and it can be mounted mid line without taking it apart... ideal for a footloop becase you can take it off easily to descend, and can be used for other things as well, unlike a pantin]

Our spaniel has a cage in the utility. He's staked his claim on the room with its heated floor and you have a real job getting him out of his cage.... mention the word bed and he's in there like a shot. I don't like animals in our living areas, mostly because as a dog, he wants to be rolling in sh*t and I'd rather he did that than I spoiled his fun trying to keep him clean....

I'm a bit of a magpie, and a storage fiend, I love for everything to have a place and for everything to be in it. Storing most stuff is easy, I have a wall of good big shelves in my shed so everything has a home. I keep my climbing, lowering & tag ropes each in their own suitably sized rope bag, I have a holdall for my harness, helmet, gloves [and boots & trousers if I'm not wearing them out] a cantilever toolbox for all my widgets & wotsits and my wedges live in there too. I have a plastic crate for my rigging gear and another for additional PPE, 1st aid kit etc. I then have my old tuck box from school, complete with 1980's stickers all over it, into which everything else goes, strops, flipline, spikes and all my hardware. I have to do it like this because every time I use my kit it all has to get loaded into the truck and then put back in the shed at the end of the day and locked up. I have even made a 'bench' for the boot of the truck so I can load it all up without double stacking it, it also doubles as a table for picnic lunches! It's the hardware I struggle with though. At the moment I just clip everything onto a Big Boa krab [in a specific order of course, so I know I haven't left anything behind], and throw it in with everything else, but it niggles at me. I was just eyeing up the Celebrations tub, I reckon that this will be my new hardware storage tub for now until a better solution presents itself. This can just be chucked in the box with everything else then. So, how do you store your gear, and what OCD's do the rest of us have? I'm absolutely positive I won't be the only one so anal about where their gear lives!

If I was buying new it would be a 441 or 460! Agree about being wary of saws on eBay, have been offered something by an AT member though which I trust infinitely more!

Bit more than I wanted to spend and a bit bigger than I need really. The biggest stuff I will probably need to tackle with it are 4' to 5' diameter Oak at the most, so I don't really need something capable of knocking down a Redwood! If I can find something on a 20" bar for which I can add a 25" later for the very occasional big fell that should be plenty....

Nice email from Jo at the Children's Trust as well. A good cause well supported, let's hope it's an organisation which as parents we never need to call on to assist us but that we can all continue to support.

Thanks for the suggestions so far, keep them coming though! Leading the way so far is an offer of a 272XP which is very tempting. I think that's about 70cc right...? I'm going to look around for an 044 / MS440 / 046 / MS460 for a week or 2 but assuming that none come up in my price range [which I doubt one will] I reckon I'll try out one of these filthy Husky things.... Not used one since I did my CS31 in 1999 so it could be quite an experience!

I have the Honey Bros strop kit [which for those who don't know comprises an ISC 3 way captive eye snap, ISC HMS krab, ISC swing cheek pulley, 4m of XTC & 1.4m of 9mm Boa]. Mine's assembled using a VT and I find it absolutely brilliant, one of the best things I've bought. I snagged my 11mm climbing line the other day so I'm going to cut it and use the shorter length of that to make up another longer version of the same arrangement. I already have a spare length of Boa so it's just the hardware which is about £41 + VAT from FRJ. If you add in the cost of friction cord at about £3 & 4m of rope at about £7 that would make it £51 + VAT, so the kit from HB, even if you pay postage, is still a good deal! Definitely get it, don't even think about it!

Thanks Alec, sounds like a good solution. Will keep my eyes peeled. Spud, which one should I be looking at? Mick et al, that was how I bought my 019T years ago. Problem I have now is it's not my full time job so I daren't rely on that arrangement.... do have an account but I don't want to splash 700 quid! Simon
