Thanks for the reply Paul, I would rather see the tree standing but it would be a lot like looking a one sided tree and a pollard would be a waste of timber in my eyes as there doesn't seem to be a lot of growth on the stem. A client I work for has a huge ( at least 3m across) Sweet chestnut in there property and it's fairly close to the house, the problem is there is a lot of dead in the top but the bottom seems pretty sound. There is that much dead in The top that there wouldn't be much of The tree left. The question is should I just take the dead out and leave the rest or should the full tree be removed. How do? I have a 3.5 tonne double drum winch with 10mm fiber core on one side and 8mm steel on the other. I need to replace both wires as they are just getting past there best and i am updating everything on the winch itself. My dilemma is that I need as much length as possible for skylinning(so thin mm rope) but I sometimes double the winch up to pull trees over and am worried that if I go for the smaller rope I might just snap it. People just assumed that I went and cut it down for the crack when in actual fact there was a lot of meetings on the route and especially about the trees and the rare mussels. Thanks for the replys. I have an old Fransgard 3500, which is only 3.5 tonne but I am looking into a bigger winch for more pull and more cable. I am going to have a play around with it in the next couple of weeks and see what it's capable of doing. I will put some photos up. -
Has any one got any photos of double drum winches being used for high lead or any pearls of wisdom on high lead systems? I know someone will say why don't you skyline it and it's because the site is only 200m wide. You could put it diagonal but it would just make more hassle. It's going to make expensive timber. That's what my dad said to do but it would be a nightmare to reverse in small lanes and my tipper only tips one way as it's off a transit. How do? I have bought a 660 pto chipper that I run off a u900 unimog. I am planning to put it on the front as the back tipping box I have is very large. One problem I have found is that it doesn't throw chip very far and that it struggles to drag brash in. I am going to take the blades off and sharpen them and also adjust the size of the chip as it's very small. Anyways what I am asking is has anyone had much to do with these chippers and what have you found that helps throw the chip? Has anyone used these on the front of a mog as well and did you have to use a reversing gear box? I have the mog in 1000 box on the pto and running it at 1600 Rpm. I thought I was missing something and it must be the sump guard plate, I have the din plate but not the other bits. Thanks for your reply it's been doing my head in for a while. If in doubt cut it out.

That's a clean Mog! Bit of a random question but would you be able to take a couple of photos of the front DIN plate as I am struggling to fit mine. If in doubt cut it out.
