  1. I understand the rule of thumb about air drying planks as a year an inch plus a year for drying time. Is the water moving along the grain to the ends of the plank as opposed to moving acoss the grain. If so surely this means that shorter planks will dry a lot quicker? I'm asking as a customer who wants a load of planks when dry will need them in short sections. Perhaps cutting into shorter lengths and sealing ends still will allow them to dry quicker, or will I just waste a lot of wood with lots more end cracks? The planks are 2 1/4 beech and oak in 12ft lengths. should I shorten them to 6ft long? Alex
  2. Wow, That is an impressive lump of beech
  3. Porch finished and roofed. Used the sweet chesnut as 4x4 posts and beam and 4x2 rafters. Lovely looking wood but had to be stained to match the black timbers of the 300+ yr old cottage. The wood was easy to work green. put a couple of small natural edge planks as seats where the tenant sits out and smokes!
  4. Hi, looking into the possiblity of a woodmizer LT15 for the estate. Has anyone got one, or have used one. I've seen an LT40 in action and am aware it has a lot more frills. Thanks Alex
  5. Thank you, Been trawling through soem other posts. Hardwood seems to go for anywhere in the £30- £70 range at the roadside, just depends on what's in it I suppose
  6. Thank you, what sort of price does it fetch? the transort will be a bit more from surrey
  7. Hi, I am trying to draw up a felling licence for a piece of woodland on the estate where I work, but need to give a few figures to the estate owner to illustrate the value of the woodland. We have about 80m3 of derelict sweet chestnut coppice and a lot of sycamore that I would like to get rid of as well as ash thinnings. I would like to mill the chestnut and maybe some big clean bits of sycamore, but what is the firewood value of chestnut at the roadside and mixed ash and sycamore in surrey. Is there a difference in price. Obviously it would be priced by the lorry load, but how much does a grab lorry take in m3? Any advice appreciated Alex

  9. Had another look today, actually about 3ft DBH, but the chatacteristic included bark is obvious, but will give it a go in the autumn
  10. Wow, Thank you for all the advice, Sounds well worth planking up. I will post some pics when we get it done
  11. Hi, We have a cupressus macrocarpa in the garden which is nearly dead. Is the timber any good? I assume it is slow growing enough to have a tight ish grain? It is about 2ft DBH Alex
  12. very true. there's a few that have died in this field. Very dry sandy soil,
  13. It will stay upright as long as it's alive. It's in a grass field so can drop limbs where it wants
  14. Found this lovely big Oak on the estate where I work, sadly not much of it left. May pass through the mill at some point. Did not have a tape handy but around 6ft DBH
  15. Is it fasciation? lots of possible causes though
  16. thank you, It should not look any different when stained
  17. Hi, I have a porch that needs replacing on a house where I work. We hoped to make it from green oak, but have not got the correct timber length in oak. We have plenty of sweet chestnut though. Are there any problems with using it for a porch. The roof is very small and so not too weighty. We thought maybe 5" by 5" to match an oak porch on the other side of the house. It will be stained black. Any thoughts appreciated Alex

  19. Yes lovely trees, shame it had to come down. A woodturner friend has had some but it seems to be cracking already. Fingers crossed it's ok
  20. Milled a 4 foot trunk 1 foot wide of Cercidiphyllum japonicum that I cut down about 4 or 5 years ago. Pleasantly suprised by the grain and colour. Milled with my Ms390 and small log mill.
  21. Don't think the hoppus tables would stretch that far
