  1. Why start with LP chain and grind the bumps off the drivelinks ?:confused1:

Wouldn't your start with LG or RS ? :001_rolleyes:

You would buy it because it was one of the more affordable 3/8 chain available at the time. Since you would be grinding on it, you wouldn't bother starting with square chisel. RS is out, the teeth stand shorter than it does on Oregon chain. Oregon chain, with the taller teeth, have more chip clearance.

In any case, that was to show you the basics of how to make a chain faster. I would assume most would get the idea.

  2. Thanks for the info :thumbup1: I don't want the noise that's goes with ported saws was just looks for something that had a bit more cut and less noise

On a 40-50cc saw, you could try and run pixel/NK/Narrow kerf chain in 325. It is nearly the same kerf as lo pro, but uses much large 325 teeth.

  3. What do you mean the chain maybe messaged :confused1:

Modified to cut faster. Usually removing the heel of the tooth to reduce friction, enlarging the gullet to promote better chip discharge, etc etc.

Here is the difference a chain and bar make:

And why not another Hemlock while we're at it:

  4. No engine mods just bar sproket and chain! I need these:thumbup: but not the bar

He is cutting hemlock(Tsuga heterophylla) in that vid - it is about as dense as noble fir at best. He is also using low pro chain on a narrow kerf bar. And judging by the size of the chips, the chain appears to have been massaged.

Here's a 357 slicing thru it like butter. I've fallen hundreds of them myself, and bucked even more.

Here's one a bit more mature.

  5. Surley more power means more fuel, auto tune only has one jet into both high and low and will only allow so much fuel in, it also has a govenor, i am not so sure porting is going to increase power just alter the power curve, still i would like to hear your findings.

There is no governor in AT or MTronic saws. Technically, no rev limiter either. The electronics control the solenoids. See Eddy's post.

As for power, if there was none to gain, why would we bother?

The last 261CM I ported was 42% faster with the bar buried in wood.

The last 241CM I did was 30% faster.

Hell, even just modding the muffler on the 261, you get huge gains.

I work with huge trees all day long, processing for furniture or firewood, on a large estate. Ain't got no time for hauling around a 660 or 880. My back is old, but my arms are young, too. This ported 044 is a god send:

  6. Eddy, i think i must have missed somthing here, are you saying you are going to port a 560XP? if so how are you goin to get more fuel into it as this is controlled by the auto tune unit.

The EL46 carbs can be reset. The owners manual explains it.

They will deliver plenty of mixture to a ported 560/562.

My problem was actually getting too much mix at idle in the WTF series used on the 241 MTronic. Though this saw seems to have had that issue long before it was ported.

  7. Yes i saw the 576 other than a lot of noise it was gutless, nice chrome pipe though, i always thought of porting as a black art, some good some bad, when ported the power band is changed so the full load cutting speed is surly going to be faster, and as chain speed is taken into account when choseing the class of trouser to wear this must become an issue, as for vibration pretty sure this will have increased, all sounds a little anal but it will only take one accident and the s t will hit the fan,how much faster can the operator honestly work with all this extra power? or is it just a matcho thing?

Porting has been around since two stroke engines have been around. If you don't get it, consider yourself lucky. You just saved yourself some duckets.

Hell, we haven't even mentioned nitrous yet...

  8. It is bad enough bring blamed for my own mistakes let alone yours Wes:sneaky2::lol:

At least you didn't do a hard sell on testing this thing with 'Stihl Diagnoostics Computahz" for 50 euro. I don't need to spend 50 euro for them to tell me I need a new carburetor...for only another 199 euro plus 70 installation, and another 50 to test it.

  9. Do you have a video of the 241 yet :001_rolleyes::001_tt2:

Well, yes and no. I have a vid, but the bar is so worn, and the metering is off on the carb, it really doesn't do it justice. I just ordered some mtronic carb parts(and am told I am the first person to ever do so - including the stihl dealer themselves). So we'll see how it goes. Spud has been helping me out with the metering as well. Wish us luck. If it fails, we can at least find a way to blame him.

    The vid:

  10. I guess it depends who has the best earth though.

e.g if the guy holding the lead was barefoot (unlikely, I know) whilst the other had his doc martens??

And you would be holding hands, wouldn't you? Not much more gay than being barefoot and hanging out with yer bud in his emo boots.

Also makes sense you would be self-harming as well.

  11. The service tool list is better for parts, but I'll be buggered if I know how to set up a husky account!? I suppose it's a dealer only system? The mark-up at my local is extortionate on service tools!

At least they will sell them to you. I wanted two drivers from my local guy. What does he tell me? "I won't sell you the tools. I'll retune the carbs for you for 20 Euro". I told him that's exactly why I want to buy the tools - the reason I want those drivers is so I don't have to pay 1,000 Euro/HR for saw work!

I need a few parts, but I am gonna wait for a bit before I go back. He didn't look too happy when I said that. But wtf was I supposed to say?
