  1. The golliwog story is much more proposterous than the stabbing one. And btw. re the stabbing story, I reasonably suspect from the photo in the Telegraph link, an Ex. Military type, and ambidexterous too, so like, totally unfair to the stabee. Houses where such characters live should surely be required to carry a Government Health Warning! mth
  2. Sounds like a Council job, from personal experience. And I agree about the pits becoming buckets. Any possibility of getting a farmer/contractor in to "rip" , i.e. the affected area, which ripping, if untrafficed after, might provide some drainage, but is there any gradient to let the water away? Other possibility Does the surface need to be kept "flat", i.e. can you import proper soil/planting material and provide mounds to allow for drainage? or Perhaps plant, Alder and Goat Willow type species, which will thrive in such unfavourable conditions. P.S. What size of trees, surely slips would be better? mth

    50 cc saw

What moneys worth of fuel are you putting through such a saw per year?, No real science involved but I reckon(ed) once the purchase/depreciation and mechanical maintenance costs of a car = money spent on fuel. call it quits Is there an equivalent ratio for 2 stroke stuff?, other than 50:1
  4. EDIT the above I dont know how I managed to put words in Matelot's mouth, but obviousley the second paragraph was my comment, though attributed to Mate(lo)

  6. One first requires to separate race or skin colour from culture, sub cultures or zealous religious mindsets. However even within our "own" European setting, cultural attitudes vary widely, with, for instance, the Northern Europeans definitely being more law/regulation abiding and much more likely to pay their taxes, whereas the Southern Europeans are much less likely to pay their taxes, this is simply a recorded fact. And frictions exist between these countries due to real or perceived cultural differences, never mind the long standing Fleming/Walloon feud within tiny Belgium. Africa, or China or the Indian sub Continent are no different, the populations of different geographical areas will distrust each other, for mostly spurious reasons. BUT! There are certainly physical differences between differing breeds or races of humankind. Simplistically, Whites cannot sprint or run. Blacks cannot swim* And there must be other innate racial/genetic inherent strengths & weaknesses. The biggest issue with UK immigration was and is the refusal of the strongest/most numerous groups to integrate, which innate tendency was very quickly encouraged by our Social Services to regard this non-integration as a "basic human right" that must be taxpayer funded, including the refusal to learn or use the English language, as evidenced by the millions of language leaflets strewn about every Council, Government or NHS building, catering for every imaginable language and dialect, incl tha Ullans. *And I am aware of the various arguments re wealth being required to allow access to swimming pools. mth
  7. Eee's a lucky lucky barstewart, iffen eee's got is own box an everyvink! Proper showoff barstewart eee is.
  8. Richy-B For my needs and tastes, the perfect tractor, I have drooled over several, but until the DB1490 expires, I cannot justify another. sigh!
  9. But the deal is done, Osmo was purchased yesterday, cheers, marcus
  10. I am very jealous of your hedgelaying skills, a thing of beauty to behold Graham, have you post images of similar work done in the past 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 years you could post? regards marcus
  11. Previous generation MB engine and gearbox/transmission, if I recall, so should be good/well proven stuff. Whats not to like, well 'cept the name i suppose.
  12. For 22 year old Cedar window frames ( I believe I was told they were Brazilian Cedar at the time), I am sanding them back to the bare timber,(very therapeutic, once I get settled) and, perhaps surprisingly, after 22 years of neglect they are still perfectly sound(so indeed possibly/probably a Cedar?) I want to give them the best long term protection, which means I am thinking an oily product to soak in rather than a surface treatment. I am not particularly worried about the finish. So is Osmo UV Protection Oil as good as it is cracked up to be, i.e. is it worth £55.00/2.5litre. Or is some of the Sadolins or Ronseal products equally good. Or Sikkens, or whatever. regards marcus
  13. These arbitrary figures puzzle me, like wtf did they "pluck" 2040kg from, 2050kg perhaps, in extremis, but more like 2000kg surely, or 2250/2500, i.e. 250kg increments, but 2040kg ??? mth
  14. It probably is, and indeed I very very very near bought one of the last absolutely loaded "runout" models from Charles Hurst, before venturing down the "G" Wagen route.
  15. No one mentioned the reason for the large nos of "overpaid" agency staff working for the NHS. To cover for the permenant staff who are off sick. Plus expensive operating theaters and highly paid consultants, should be working 24/7, not lying empty while the consultants golf from 12:00 Friday through a long weekend. Our local hosp is a mixed bag, the x-ray dept is very, very well run, but the cleaning staff and porters are a bunch of workshy feckers, this info from a bloke who worked there as a porter briefly, but long enough to see the pattern, before getting a job on the railways. N.B. And my previous employer is now giving very recently promoted managers(with 10k pay increases), a generous retirement packages, based on their recent pay upgrades/promotions, and this as part of a cost-saving exercise. And no doubt in due course the Directors who "managed" this debacle, will get generous golden handshakes, to go early. EDIT I intended to say the "overpaid" Agency staff merely reflect the true "cost-to-employ" incl HR and management overheads and other hidden costs, all too often the reports choose to compare the bare hourly rate paid to the NHS staff member with the Agency rate, "forgetting" about selection and recruitment costs, training costs, sick costs, holiday pay, pension contributions and indeed their(that is the NHS's) grossly inefficient HR/payroll management costs. Which gives an entirely different figure mth
  16. The Nissan Patrol with the 4.2 was as economical when towing a cattle trailer as when running without a trailer on tow, at least this was the answer received when my brother asked a neighbour why he always had a mostly empty trailer in tow, i.e. he might as well look at it, as look for it, on the odd occassion he actually needed it. presumably due to low overall gearing mth
  17. When I first bought the 5 tonne Krpan, I opted for the basic rope operated model. As soon as I had yoked it to the tractor, and tried to figure out where to store the operating cords, and realizing how likely they were to get snagged on branches and brash, I accepted my mistake and changed it for the Electro Hydraulic model, which decision I do not regret. And Currently looking at a Elca remote control unit, and wishing I had the hydraulic outfeed option as well. sigh mth
  18. Since I have been attempting to figure what my tightly strapped 0.5m3 billet bundles are worth, based on other firewood offered for sale locally, but always sold loose, I found what should be an impartial source, the UN no less! see link; http://www.fao.org/3/a-i4441e.pdf Which interestingly, for Woodworks, states that 1.0m3(in 1m lengths, though) stacked will make 1.4m3 loose. cheers Marcus
  19. Eggs, Apart from the "bling" phones, it is the rest of the associated "bling" lifestyle choices that cause the never-ending so-called "poverty", i.e. shop bought "on-a-whim" 500ml bottles of water, latte cafes, taxis everywhere, no matter how close, nor indeed how far, etc etc Never mind carpets and other floor coverings, or furniture, only lasting 3 to 5* years, due to neglect if not gross abuse, before being skipped and replaced "on-the-tick" etc. etc. Or, "many mickle mak a muckle" as was once apparently said and understood by the thrifty dour Yorkshire folk. I was getting a bit of stick in the local pub recently, about me being a farmer(but I am not, cos I had to work for a living) wearing a fancy proper(Ex Army webbing belt actually) belt instead of baler twine. but again, therein lies the rub, the Fendt tractor driving farmers still understand the many-mackle-maks-a-muckle truth, and use free balertwine for a belt. etc etc *we are looking at 25 years minimium to 40 years, hopefully.
  20. People could/can afford to eat, if they bought staples and cooked, I do accept money may be tight if surviving on constant take aways or ready meals. Anyway apparently most/all/anyone can afford a bling phone, and the associated user costs. never mind the fags booze and bingo. From 45 years worth of personal observations in the local community, and wider world. mth.
  21. Meh, do it right and buy the Duro, c/w Crane see link http://www.mod-sales.com/direct/vehicle/related/73020/LHD_Mowag_Duro_II_Hiab_6x6_All_terrain.htm
  22. Possibly due to peaty ground, means they cant root properly, and with the "pumping" of the root area due to cyclical wind loading, the peat will separate from the underlying pan, also probably more exposed to stronger winds. cheers mth
  23. prob about 4 acre, I know which direction the prevailing wind comes from, and the direction of the windthrown trees is another clue. I am winching out the thinnings & prepared to leave the "felled/thinned" stuff that is ackward to access on the ground for nature to take its course. currently leaving about 3m between trees, suffice that the crowns are just still just interlocking kinda a suck-it-and-see approach I would be pleased to get another 20 years out of at least some of them. mth
  24. So to continue with my Sitka theme, how long will they live? how tall will they grow? what girth might they achieve? and what distances should I be leaving between the retained trees? (I forgot to measure, but probably DBH's of 300mm ish) mth EDIT; just checked, the stronger ones are easily 400mm DBH
