  1. I broke the E-Stop switch on my chipper today, probably got a branch caught in it due to it's position. It's an ordinary "MUSHROOM HEAD PUSH BUTTON" type. I've been searching the web for a replacement but there appears to be a bewildering array of ratings etc. From a safety/insurance point of view is there much of a difference between these switches or am I safer going to a dealer and paying "premium" price for security?
  2. Why do you say the 346XP is useless at ringing up. I'm looking for a really decent "all rounder" (landscaper, I don't use saws full-time). I'm looking at the 346XP or Husq 365. I know they are in different classes but both are fairly highly regarded.
  3. Do you maintain "Full Control" over the machine using this device. E.g for precise cutting on the inside edge of a wide hedge. Something in me tells me that feeling the weight/balance of machine assists in making precise cuts. I'm really interested in this though, my back is often wrecked after a long day hedge cutting.
  4. Silly question maybe; can you climb a ladder with the "elephants trunk"? I always find holding a pole hedge cutters harder on my back when using it horizontally. Deep hedges are a killer when you can't access them from both sides.
  5. I read a detailed article on wasps early in the year. It outlined their positive traits and interesting social behaviour. That article changed my opinion of them until I got stung 3 times while shaping a cotoneaster hedge a few weeks ago. Nasty little buggers, I hate them. BTW they have destroyed my apple crop as well.
  6. Thanks for the help everyone. Much appreciated.
  7. Escallonia and Griselinia are not an option in Ireland anymore. Lots of dead hedges here between cold Winters and disease. Portuguese Laurel is a fairly safe bet (for now).
  8. £25???? You would want to be fairly busy to make a living at that rate!!!!
  9. Can anybody offer some advice on sharpening/adjusting hedge cutters? I've kept my Tanaka THT 2520S for "finer" work only but the cut is beginning to deteriorate recently. Is this something i can undertake myself or should I hand over to my local agent that will no doubt rob me for the privilege.
  10. Why does use of the extension strip the shaft/damage clutch? Is this true of all power pole pruners or just the Echo?
  11. PM'd you
  12. Maybe that's why there's a "quality control issue". I notice the Saturn Knives disc is much more expensive than Abtecs' although the product image looks the exact same.
  13. There appears to be a problem with these discs at the moment. 115mm 4 1 2 diameter Diamond coated wheel Vanity Blade This an email I received from the company yesterday, "Thank you for your order. Unfortunately, we have a quality control issue with this item and is not available at this moment in time. These have been re-ordered but we have not date as to when these will be in stock with us. Please advise if you wish to keep this on back order or if you prefer a full refund. Apologies for the inconvenience caused to you. Kind regards Lorraine. Customer Services. Abtec Industries Limited Does anyone know of another supplier? I'm googling with no results.
  14. I'm thrilled at the response to this post. I have yet to meet a S/E person that has never considered throwing in the towel. I'm not at that stage but there are times when you have to ask yourself if you're doing the right thing. It would be foolish not to continually revue your present situation IMO. Somebody mentioned that becoming S/E by default is a possible precursor to failure, this is true but I was given good notice of impending redundancy. I had plenty time to consider my options. My decision to go S/E was very well planned and thought out. I knew it would be tough. Business is growing slowly and I'm confident it will continue to grow, I'm also certain that there will be days when I'd love to walk away, such is life. I was curious about peoples opinions and I'm glad I asked.
  15. Two years after starting my own business( due to unemployment) I now realize that being self employed has it's positives and negatives. Positive; I love working for myself. I love my job. I get an immense sense of satisfaction out of what I do. 99% of my customers give me repeat business so I must be doing something right....and much more. Negative; Very long hours, many of which are unpaid ( looking at jobs, repairing machines, pricing stuff). Getting pricing wrong on occasions and not making decent profit. No steady income. Competing with bluffers. Wife fretting about irregular income. Weather stopping some types of work (Lawns etc) I'm 42 now and although I'd rather work for myself. There is no doubt that a "proper" job gives a more secure income but I would be trading uncertainty for much less satisfaction. Anyone got any words of wisdom??????
  16. Thanks for tips. The mesh visor gives me 99.5% protection but it's the 0.5% that gets me every time. Today it was dog poo, very, very unpleasant.
  17. Can anyone suggest a good comfortable set of safety glasses/goggles for strimming? It seems no matter what I wear I manage to get something to shoot right into the corner of my eye to ruin my day.
  18. @Harrison2604 Like your Sig "So many people live within unhappy circumstances and yet will not take the initiative to change their situation because they are conditioned to a life of security, conformity, and conservatism, all of which may appear to give one peace of mind, but in reality nothing is more dangerous to the adventurous spirit within a man than a secure future." ....not too sure the wife would agree though. I'm really busy at the moment but I know it will collapse at the beginning of July, always does
  19. The R185 looks very capable on specs, will inquire , thanks.
  20. I use the Tanaka TPS 270S with the 3 foot extension when needed. It's fairly unbalanced with the extension attached ( 2 foot is probably better in hindsight) but I'm using for over a year now with no problems at all.
  21. Using it for 6 months now and yes, for a few weeks there was a black discharge from the exhaust of my machines as they were clearing out. No problems apart from that though. I only wish it was cheaper, €24 for 5 litres here in Ireland and can't source any bigger/cheaper quantities than that. BTW I used a friends hedge cutters during the week that was running on standard 2 stroke mix and the fumes were noxious by comparison..........no turning back.
  22. Thanks for that. I was hoping to be at the show but couldn't make it.
  23. I live in a area with a fairly healthy population of rabbits. I also have a healthy pair of Jack Russell dogs that happen to love hunting rabbits. I took the spirals off my fruit trees a couple of years ago thanks to them.
  24. Agree, and I've read elsewhere that Stihl have endorsed same, well at least they said it won't invalidate warranty. Here it is..... http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/aspen-fuel/17741-letter-stihl-regarding-aspen.html
  25. €2K , brought it down from NI. Was also considering a Husqvarna SG13 at twice the price. I honestly reckon I don't need the extra grunt, or weight (or cost) because it's mostly hedges and smaller stuff I work with. About half of all the hedging in my area is dead; griselinia, escalonia etc, lots of shrubs too Hypericum, fuschia etc. People are slow to remove them for various reasons, mostly hoping they'll somehow come back to life.
