  1. Dont do it , Topping birches is criminal and it will look terrible . All birches that i have seen topped have large amounts of decay as well as birch polypore. You may as well remove it if your going to reduce it that hard .
  2. Work is always slow at this time of year . Its taken me 5 years to get a point were i have plenty of work to last me through the winter . For the last 4 i have only just made enough money to stay going. You have to stick with it and things will pick up .
  3. I have a transit that weights about 2.6 with driver still over weight all the time thought . The company i used to work for had a canter 3.5ton which was rumoured to have the biggest payload in its class , one of the other guys may be able to confirm this . I have also heard really good things about the 3 litre iveco daily .
  4. I have had a few friends with mogs and they all say there good if you are doing the right work. They have also said they are ridiculous on repair bills. Some one changing from a mog to a truck is not a stupid decision it is what ever suits your company . I looked at a unimog before i bought my iveco eurocargo and because of the long distance we travel it was just not practical or economical to run one .
  5. LOL yeah not quite sure what i was trying to acheive with that . Its not often i use more that one rope or even a work postion strop. Must have been having a paranoid day were things just didnt feel right lol
  6. As many as i have to make money and get jobs done lol. I start at half 6 and finish around 4 in the winter but summer can go on past that . I have worked for a number of companys over time and have found that none of them work set hours . Tree work is not for the work shy or lazy so be ready to work long hours and hard for your money lol .
  7. Few jobs from last year . Me at the top of a lightning struck cedar and a large mature sycamore fell with extensive fire damage .
  8. Adam . the sides on the van cost quite a bit. The aluminium came to about 70 quid for a sheet of 8x4 plus the cost of the frame to support it. Like I said its a costly process that takes you a lot of time . Your better of paying to Have somthing built so you can get on with cutting trees and making money .
  9. Have bought an 07 plate eurocargo 7.5 cost an arm and a leg but its only got 29000 miles on it and should be good for the future unless they bring out higher emmsion standards . Going to keep hold of the transit as like you said is good for SMall or tight access .
  10. Cool i wouldnt think you would need a transit with that beast of a lorry you own lol . I had already been told about knocking him down alister pre warned me . Were you pleased with the final product ?
  11. Its an 04 plate transit. The tool box was a lot of work as i had to cut the tipping bed and make up a frame . It takes up a lot of potential chip space but fully loaded the van is overweight . The body is suprisingly light as two people can lift it on and off. I wont be building another one thought as it takes to long . My iveco has just gone off to southern bodys to have the high sides etc fitted .
  12. This is my transit . It took about 4 long days to build and is made of chequer plate which has been reversed. I had to cut the body down to fit the tool box . It is completely removable and could be fitted on to another van with a few adjustments . Please excuse the ***** bit of rope holding the ladders i lost the ladder bracket . I have alos had the paint job redone since .
  13. I Applied for my operator licence yesterday . So far its cost me £450 with an addtional £391 if we get the licence . Its all a load of rubbish but if you dont do it properly and get caught you can get your lorry impounded and fined . It will also go against you if you then try to apply for a licence . Seems as i have spent lot of money on my new lorry its worth doing it properly . On the upside i did some hunting around and found a really good idpendent hgv Fitter who charges £40 for the 6 weekly check and £40ph +parts for any repairs needed . Iveco main dealer wanted £100ph +PArts
  14. I live down the road from hegest farm and i think they only take rubbish from the tree companys that rent the yard of them . I Used to work for oakwood when they were based there and they were the only ones allowed in .
  15. I agree with the guys who are saying cut it up and grind stump as is the root ball is not worth messing about with it will be heavy and you will struggle to move it about with out a machine .

    192t

LOL i still plan to run 020 i think they are great little saws but as 2 are due for replacement and i have seen some local guys using them i thought i would give them a try . I realise they are under the power of the 020 biut doesn't make them a bad saw .

    192t

I am looking for a supplier in France that sell the stihl 192t chainsaw as my 020 have all seen better days . Any help would be good
  18. A mate of mine had a chipper stolen last year he knew were it was so we went to the local ***** camp. Sure enough it was sitting there at the back of the site hitched to a van . We called the police and they turned up took one look and said they wouldn't go in to get it and told us if we went in to get it back and caused trouble they would have to arrest us for tress passing as the site was private land some one tell me how that works ?

    Crap day

Hows this ,Went to unlock yard gate this morning and lock was frozen solid ,so went to unlock store to get kettle lock also frozen . Ended up throwing the coffee i bought with me over it then the chipper refused to start because it had been sitting for 3 days . Just another monday i suppose .
  20. Aplogise andy for my comments on the snow day poll . I didnt mean to get personal about Stus work but he hit a bit of a nerve i dont ike my guy being refered to as young boys . They are both under 21 but they are damn good at there job.

  21. Sorry andy didnt mean to upset . sorry Stu hit a bit of a nerve have spent the last few years trying to prove that its not your age its your ablity that counts i didnt mean to get personal . I do have two people on the books and they are both under the age of 21 but they are good at there job .
  22. They may be young but they still produce better work than that cherry plum you did and what does it matter how old you are any way they are all fully qualified with the right qualifications and they work there arses of for me so i have no complaints . I am only 24 and i have been running a business for 4 years so i dont see that age should reflect on how good a tree surgeon you are . I have more work than i can cope with and i dont have to contract to Gristwood.
  23. I understand that things are tight and if this weather continues i will struggle but all the time i can pay wages i will . I dont see why they guys should go without i took on that responsiblity when i employed them . Saying that they have been good to me and said if they have to take unpaided leave to help me out they will but i said untl i run out of money they will still get paided .
  24. Yeah your telling me . I get there even earlyer to sort out the gear so by 6:30 we are ready to go . Alot of our work is in london and i hate traffic so i would rather be there early than late . If there is one thing i cant stand thats being late especially when you have told people your going to be there . We have ropes up trees and ready to start by 8 that way we get the most done in a day . The guys who work for me are great they work as hard as they can with no let uo i would rather get out early and give them more time to do there, work that way they dont rush and produce rubbish tree work .
  25. no we pay them a day rate so they work from 6:30 - 5 they are free to leave at 5 . At the end of the day they are self employed so they can do what they like but the other side of the coin means they are not entitled to sick pay holiday pay ( Snow Pay ) etc. I used to sub for a number of companys so i know how annoying it can be when you get a call to say your not needed with virtual no notice but thats the risk you take .
