  1. It won't gum up your flue half as much as green oak.
  2. I would also advise keeping control on costs. It's too easy when starting a new business to say 'I need this and that' and splashing out loads of cash on gear. You do need the right gear but sometimes you can make do a bit if you try or go for second hand gear.
  3. I've just got a saw log horse which is great but I'm having issues with the bar slipping in the clamp. The clamp has 2 roll pins which the manual shows fitting into grooves in the bar. Can you buy these or should I just drill a hole in the bar to take one of the pins?
  4. Night freight take big stuff. City link also take up to 100kg in one box.
  5. Surely it grows faster than ash? Anyone have any data on that. We took one out a few years ago which was interfering with an electric pole. I only burnt it last year and the regrowth is almost proper firewood again.
  6. Do you get any problems with it choking on sawdust? Ours used to choke on grain sometimes. Certainly did when dad dropped his new Motorola flip phone into it.
  7. I've often wondered this too. I wonder how many acres of fully managed woodland the uk would need. Surely it would need to be super fast growing stuff rather than natives.
  8. Bit of a 'moment' today in F1. Vettel in the press conference (on pole dammit) with JB and Lewis either side, both wearing poppies. Struck me as a bit symbolic in some way. Dunno.
  9. Ours was like this Loyal - Roth Manufacturing - Hay Bale-Elevator Systems
  10. Takes me back. I used to stick bales on one of them as a kid with Dad and Uncle George up in the loft stacking them up. I remember it being about 30ft long though and with no so big teeth. Blummin dangerous now I think of it. The kill switch was always down on the floor about half a mile from anyone. I can still remember the chatter-chatter noise it made. Thank god for round bales.
  11. I also like Queen. [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=psXkvAlhDXU]Queen - Another one bites the dust, shreds - YouTube[/ame]
  12. Anyone built one of these? I need something to take logs from the saw horse into a vented bag. Or is there anything similar you can adapt? I've thought of using gravity but it means finding or building a mound to drive the truck up on and chop from there. Cheaper to run I suppose.
  13. I don't see any wood, all I see is pound signs! Good luck mate, hope your hard work is rewarded. The wood looks like a good product.
  14. We keep a big old bells whiskey bottle (you know, the huge one) and put all our coppers in it over the year for poppy day and other stuff. This year I sent my boys into school with a purse each jam packed with coppers and instructed them to put the whole lot in for thier poppy. Needless to say both came back with a poppy and a bulging purse. We did have a long talk about it but they are only 4 and 6 and I have to admire their business skills! The coppers went in next day with the taxi driver....... It's not so long ago is it that Europe was at war. Not long at all. When you think how lucky we are to have missed conscription by a generation or 2. It doesn't bear thinking about. God bless those brave soldiers who gave us the chances we have today and god bless those who continue to do so.
  15. Old style hard rock but loads of other stuff. Mainly AC/DC, Zep, Purple, Sabbath and then on to early metal stuff like Maiden etc. Also love the old blues rock like Fleetwood Mac, Free and so on. Other times I like a bit of Sibelius. Really I just like something which moves either the listener or moves the air around you. Can't abide lukewarm anything. Music has to DO something to me.
  16. So is the common sense thing to do to plant it out as a crop but try to remove young trees from existing woodland? I have one mighty syc which must be 100 foot tall and is a stunning tree but it does have a few hundred kiddies around it.
  17. We've got a villager a flat and it's perfect for us. No build problems at all. I've seen and used many stoves in holiday cottages over the years and I just no longer buy the rubbish that is talked up about some brands. We sell a particular budget brand which is constantly slated and yet we have hundreds of happy customers. As stated, most villagers have a flue damper which gives an extra level of control. Our glass hardly ever gets dirty and it pumps out the heat. My advice would be to avoid 'forum wisdom' as most people copy other's opinions. Ask owners of specific stoves and make your choice from that.
  18. Just got one of these (Clarke CCLH1) and put it together this afternoon. It's a fairly light duty one but takes my old Husky 136 no problem. I'm sure most of you have used these before but I just wanted to say it's a revelation to me. I've always found it tricky cutting up poles / sticks safely with a chainsaw and the chop saw is OK but not really designed for such work. I just cut a dumpy bag of logs in about 15 minutes with this thing, it's brilliant. I'm sure there are many others similar out there but I've never tried one before. It's totally safe, controlled and at a comfortable working height and you can drop the logs straight into a bag / barrow. Just thought I would mention it. They are going for around £70-80 and I reckon that's a bargain. The best bit is that it allows to leave the smaller stuff in 4-6 foot lengths which makes it easier to bring back from the wood in the hilux and easier to stack outside for initial seasoning. Plus it gives me a use for my old 136 which I am still fond of.
  19. Few weeks here as well. We have an Esse in the kitched which we cook on and heats the thermal store so that's been on for about a month. As above, just trying to stop the gas boiler having to cut in if the store gets too cool. Our house is also very well insulated but the problem we find with that is that it doesn't soak up the heat during the day so gets chilly in the evening. Plus, having the woodburner blazing away is what makes life worth living. I've only lived in one house without a real fire and it was very depressing.
  20. Cool, thanks for the advice.

    No oak???

I don't like oak myself. You have to chop it so small and dry it for so long and if you don't it burns like a pig. Only time I use it is when I have some kind of softwood to mix it 50 50 with. Whenever we get a big oak falling on the farm we ring it really thin and then chop it into small 'bricks' as that's the only way to get the to dry and we don't have a splitter than can cope with a 250mm thick oak ring.
  22. I put more blame on the customer to be honest. Surely 'a load of logs' are going to be as the OP delivered if no other discussion takes place? Try taking 2 foot lengths to 99% of your customers and you will have a problem. This guy has some specific requirements which is fine but I feel he wasted your time by not telling you up front. Then again, you should have asked and if this experience does one thing, at least you now know to ask all new customers what they need. So, it's a positive thing after all. Next thing to do is get back to the guy and try to give him what he needs. Give him another chance. It may turn into a long term relationship.
  23. I'm loving using this as a fuel and it grows like a weed here. It coppices readily and seems to dry quickly for a hardwood. Also nice to cut and split. BUT I am also told that I should try to irradicate in my land as it is not a native. No other good reason is ever given when people tell me this. So, why is it the bad guy? Apart from mould on the logs if you store them wrong, what does it do that's so wrong? I was considering 4 acres of new coppice as a fuel source for the rest of my days (hopefully).
  24. I'm near Totnes mate. Don't have any kind of haulage though. Would be interested in a chunk of it if the price was right inc delivery.
  25. Thanks for the comments guys. Sawman, you mean something like this? JTM End Feed Female Iron Straight ( Copper Fitting: 22 mm x 3/4") I take it that the female thread itself needs to be the seal hence the need for PTFE etc. ? It does look like there is plenty of thread on there so it should go right onto the decent remaining male thread. Then I can just fit the existing compression elbow onto the bare pipe using a new olive. This should do the trick I think as long as I can get it to go on straight and not muller the rest of the thread. Rover, the other pipe has been soldered on from when it was new. I have no idea why he did this as the thread looks fine on this. It's just a big mess of solder and the tank jacket is burnt all around it. I think he was a bit of a bodger unfortunately. I could do this as a last resort on the bottom fitting but would rather not unless I have to. Not least as I'm not confident with solder but have used compression fittings / ptfe etc many times over the years with no problems. Plus it looks carp and I can see it just popping off at some point, especially if somebody knocks it in the cupboard etc. . As it's just a loop into a coil there is not a lot of water in there but I would rather avoid this if I can.
