  1. Just curious but what does an experienced climber earn in england as an employee here £60 a day after tax nat ins etc would be about the norm.
  2. i bought a new sg 13 about 6 months ago was a bit sceptical about the new head only 3 teeth on it but these can be rotated 3 times before sharpening. turned out a great job and saves a lot of hassele running back and forht to hire centres paying big money for worn out machines and not having to wait for hire machine to be free. You can do fell then get on with stump alli in one day. and its light enough for to men to lift in and out of back of truck and small enough to chip past. Ive done some big stumps with it no bother it just gives a bit more of an upper body workout plus you will always find one groundie who loves stumpgrinding at least thats been the case everywhere ive ever worked
  3. you boys are going to have to tighten up and drop prices or live off the fat of the last couple of years. I dont believe you think £400 a day is cheap you could work for a lot less without being a "busy fool" there is still a good margin at less. I wish i was getting anywhere near that for 2 good men grafting hard with top kit
  4. I bought a big mill 5 years ago found it a lot of hassle to set up. moved on to an M7 which is great for smaller diameter straight stuff but am now considering an alaskan to bring lrg diameter stuff down to a size to fit m7 as it looks very handy to use. I would also be interested in opinions on the alaskan mill to fit a 3120xp
  5. Iknow its probably not to good for you but i have bad hand circulation too so when hands start to get unusable up a tree i just heat them on the exhaust of the o20 while revving her for a few seconds and they are nice and cosy for a while longer
  6. woodland im sure plenty of stuff goes from ireland to england too
  7. No steve im asking them is it a normal thing to be asked for backhanders if thats what they are and how they handle the situation when it arises. Where do you draw the line between a backhander and a gift? hard cash in an envelope?
  8. I was wondering what many of you smaller firms do by way of christmas presents/cash donations would do if asked by larger outfits you sub into for sweeteners. Not so much to those who work directly for LAs but more for the smaller outfits that would be working as subbies to the large outfit. What do you do when asked for donations to christmas dos and the like or just bluntly asked for xmas sweetners by contracts managers that give you too much work for you to ignore. I would prefer if this was replied to by people who have had this or similar experiences as what most people think they would do is probably not what they would actually do IMO.
  9. 026 or ms260 as it is called now is the most over rated saw i have ever come across it wont last half as long as a 346. The 357 will blow its decompression button off after a lot of hard use and rattling around in the back of a truck. 346 is bullet proof i have 3v of them quality saws.
  10. When i started out i worked for an outfit that ran about six green mechs and every one was scrap i swore i would never have one about me. They used to block constantly on wet days chipping conifer. That was ten years ago though have they really come on that much since then if anyone knows what year they got their act together so i can avoid anything older thanks for the input so far men it helps
  11. the only way to learn using a crane is to get with an experienced man watch him question him, put chains on for him and wait till he tells you you can do one and offers to do the chains for you so he can keep you right. Cuts, chain location, and predicting what the cut section will do are the key to crane jobs that and a good sense of self preservation
  12. cheers tommer i had read about the TW bearings but thought that was maybe just a few unhappy customers. I have only ever used an old 12" vermeer and it was awsome but iheard parts and servicing were a problem over here. how does the vermeer compare on price? You dont see that many about second hand.
  13. yeah josh arb used to do a lot of crane work when i was leadclimber for a bigger company doing commercial work but now rarely as i work for myself and domestic people dont like paying for them so much
  14. Yeah could have took it down by hand but there were 5 other trees with a lot more targets round them that we were doing with the crane anyway. Also the guy that owns the golf club we were working at also owned the crane company and they were supplying the crane so took her with the crane for speed and to save the tarmac a bit.
  15. Beech M 21 Poor. Upper eastern and northern crown dead. Progressive and terminal dieback. Large dead upper branches and limbs over car park. Severe past root damage from excavation apparent 1m north of base. Leaning north. Co-dominant stem fork with four main limbs arising at 3 -4m height. Large, mature specimen. Stem base 1m from new car park. Dying and potentially unstable from root damage. Crown reduction would be a temporary and visually inappropriate option. Thats what the consultant decided high priority fell
  16. Sorry if this has been discussed before but im looking at buying a new chipper approx 6" would any experienced users of TW190 s or equivalent jensen care to give their opinions on them or any other suggestions would be welcome. I have used jensens before but they seemed to run out of steam after a year or two of hard use although the ones i used wouldnt have known what a service was. I have always been a schliesing man but they seem to be like hens teeth second hand these days and my 98 220mx is ready to retire.
  17. is it as hard to get parts for echo in england as in ireland i waited 2 months for a pa2600 shaft
  18. Just a few pics of todays job for anyone interested
  19. Dean. What sort of money is in one of those snitcher units it looks like it would have a lot of handy uses?
  20. Hi guys I recently bought a jet winch similar to a tirfor and am having problems operating it probably through my own stupidity. Its a good tool the only problem is once i have winched some thing over i cant get it to release the wire rope so i can pull it out. I am stuck pumping the handle for ages feeding the rope out to put it away. The instructions are in very broken english and i cant really decipher them. Any one using one. Any advice would be welcome.
  21. I pull a trailer with a towbar on the blade of a 3 ton mini digger to collect timber and it works a treat even on wet ground
