...................... actually most French do just that !! ................ Also it may well have been kiln dried but it depends how it has been stored since then ! Think you might find there are plenty items they choose be it TV's, mobiles, shoes, Scotch, etc etc that is not French !

We import 100s of container loads every year with very few problems. I think the problem here is the length of time in the container ( approx 6 weeks )compared to to shipping from the Baltics ( 6 days ).

The guy was not an idiot ordering firewood from 1000s miles away, he was naive paying upfront. Believe it or not as long as the conifer the crate is made from is Kiln Dried it complies with current regulations. I do not understand your issue with importing firewood. Do you only eat food and drink produced in France, drive a French car etc etc, we live in a global market !!

This is for those thinking of importing from someone who does not reside in the UK. This was a friends load from Bulgaria, all paid upfront !! Sold as Premium Kiln Dried !!

Ben, With respect I think you are just anti imported firewood, I note your " dig " at another importer on this forum. What I said was it would be ludicrous to ban the importation of firewood when there is a much greater risk from many other packaging's imported. ie - The one case of EAB came from crates of slate from China. You obviously feel you have a better understanding of the risks involved than our plant health authorities as they have not even introduced any form of compulsory risk mitigation. We are responsible importers and as such see kiln print out drying schedules on every load imported. Our supplier is FSC certified and as a forester for over 30years I am well aware of the potential catastrophe if EAB took hold in the UK.

Markus, I have been looking into this recently, using my contacts in The Baltics I priced bringing in a bulk shipment of birch pulp, unfortunately the figures do not stack up and I doubt that they will in the next few years, bear in mind their prices are also rising.

I agree regulation of some sort is a must, however, it must cover a much wider spectrum than just firewood, the amount of imported goods coming into the UK with some sort of wooden packaging is staggering, fruit from all over the world, white goods, garden furniture, slate & stone from China, etc etc the list is endless. To be fair, the risk from firewood is probably relatively small compared to other imported goods. To suggest a complete ban on importing firewood is ludicrous. I think i am correct to say the UK had one case of EAB which was contained, the culprit was wooden crates of slate from China.

Hardly think that by putting a bio security statement on his website is likely to make any difference, a bit like self regulation, a false sense of security is a risky place to be !!

Surely voluntary self certification is better than no certification ? Or perhaps you think it is not worth the bother ?

My understanding at present is that if the wood is correctly kiln dried ( genuine high temperature kiln ) the risk is negated, however some firewood entering the UK from the Baltics may be dried in lower temperature kilns. We as responsible importers see print outs of the drying schedules of each load dried. The recent report by Forest Research to FC Plant health giving an overview of UK trade in woodfuel is a little sketchy. They do not appear to be able to get very accurate figures on volumes imported, based on their figures, 8400 tonnes of firewood was imported into the UK in 2012, I would suggest it was more than double that figure and that 2013 would see that figure double again. There is a responsibility on importers to ensure that any wood imported has been kiln dried correctly.

The reason I bought from Green Delta was this was a new area for potential supply and was not tied directly to the euro. I do not solely import from 1 country, eggs in 1 basket and all that ! To be honest, Bosnia has the potential to supply huge amounts into the UK, however not dissimilar to the Baltics, dealing with Bosnians will prove trying ! The first shipment that came to us from Bosnia was the first imported wood from that region since the Royal Navy stopped to re-mast their ships !

I have been importing from Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia for over 5 years and only now do i have the quality right, it has been a long hard slog having had containers not appear, mouldy wood, conifer mixed in and every other problem you could imagine. I now have 1 main supplier who also sources and quality controls my shipments. I have a good working relationship with them and i visit them in the Baltics on a regular basis, likewise they visit us in the UK as business partners and friends.

Correct. Do you think i am going to send a full container of firewood to someone i have never met without any deposit ! Welcome to buying containers of firewood ! This is normal trade practise, in fact if you want to save yourself some money buy direct from the Baltics and just pray your container does arrive and has in it what you think you have paid for. I will happily give you references of UK firewood merchants who buy containers from me every week if you are a serious buyer. Yes you will pay a small premium buying from me but you will after your first container only pay on receipt of goods unlike most, you will get the chance of a sample pallet and yes you will deal with a UK company and speak only to people whose first language is English.
