  1. Im not sure why im asking this question as i think i know what your all going to say but, After hopefully passing all the courses would i be able to jump straight in the trees, or do you have to be a grounds man first.
  2. Thanks Mozza, I guess in videos there could be bad habits in them, and its best for me to "go in blind", i just feel as if i should be doing somethig in the mean time.
  3. I've bought some books and just read through one "To fell a Tree" Jeff Jepson I have one on the way, "Tree climbers companion" Jeff Jepson While i thought the book was really informative (To fell a tree) i need to see it done on video, I go on my cs 30/31 in Jan as some of you guys will allready know, I was wondering if any of you guys knew where to watch videos on the net besides clips off youtube, while there ok they are edited to fit youtubes restrictions, Any info would be great guys, Thanks Conway2010
  4. Thanks for all your replies guys and to you recceboy for your advice and suggestions, Is Recce your first name, Your mum choose well if so.
  5. I've not been told yet as im waiting for my letter from Myerscough, I do remember talking to an instructor over the phone called Andy who said he'll be there at the course
  6. Thanks guys for all the feedback, i think i will wait to buy climbing kit until i do the cs 38 course, Im still intrested in getting the Stihl ms 260 as safety is paramount as we all know, and the Huskys that many are on about seem to be faster at cuts but im in no race to cuts logs and fell tree's in record time just yet, so thanks guys you've all be really helpfull.
  7. Thanks for the advice Shreks wee Brother, I totaly understand where your coming from and appreciate that spending money now will not give me the experience that i need, but to get on this course i have no other option and to spend little money on second hand tools or products of lesser quality doesnt make sense to me. I dont have massive resources and would of preffered to do the courses with supplied kit but that isnt the case so i must buy my own.
  8. Cheers for the info Rob , yeah im going on the short courses so i'll need my own kit, and yes i'll be doing the climbing and ariel rescue course cs 38 i think it is, hopefully soon after my 30/31 courses, i'll check that harness out aswell thanks Rob
  9. Thanks Penfold, it says in the Myerscough college prospectus that you must bring your own chainsaw, doesnt say anything about bringing my own harness though so i will hold out on the harness, thanks again Penfold
  10. what is the 026, Im thinking of getting the ms 260 due to it being light and not too aggressive, i've not used a chainsaw before so i dont want to turn up at my course with a chainsaw thats bigger than me....and the tree lol
  11. Thanks for the advice on harness's Redmoosefaction i'd be pissed if i spent loads on one that pinched my baby makers, Owch!
  12. Thanks for the quick reply Highland, I do know the equipment need for the first courses cs 30/31, but im really intrested in getting the right stuff, from being in the building trade for 7 years theres tools and then theres tools!, lol i totaly understand that what im asking is bound to cause a major debate, but it gives me an idea, and stops stihl convincing me that you must only buy the most exspensive to be safe.
  13. HI guys, I am going to be buying tools and equipment next week, and dont really know whats the right stuff to buy, im thinking of just going to stihl and asking them but would love to hear from the pro's (you guys) on whats the best with a good price-performance ratio I am going for the MS 260 chainsaw so thats covered, anything you guys think i should buy let me know, I need everything so a list would be excelent if you have the time, Im going on my first course in Jan so i want to start getting stuff now, Thanks in advance Rhys
  14. Intresting fact guys about MS 260's being more powerfull than ms 171 to 250's and just as light, I think i've found which model to get Stihl MS 260. Cheers guys. Also i've just ordered books (The tree climbers companion) and (To fell a tree by Jeff Jepson) any more great books that i need to get, i will be getting (Collins Complete Guide to British Trees: A Photographic Guide to Every Common Species) But its due a reprint soon so i'll wait for that....Thanks again guys
  15. Ian what do you think of the smaller chainsaws from stihl (ms 171 to the ms 250) these are classed as chainsaws for home owners but i see them as being lighter and have shorter bars, iIt says in the prospetus for the cs 30/31 to have a max of 15 inch bar so smaller should be better surely...thanks in advance Ian
  16. Hey guys i've learnt tonight that i shouldnt just jump straight in to this type of work and i should definetly get some work experience under my belt first before taking on ANY work on my own , i would still love to know what are your Fav books on Arboriculture, im really glad i joined this group, been really helpfull, Thanks again guys.
  17. Its a good idea that Mozza, thanks for the advice.
  18. Ian i really do appreciate your advice im doing the cs 30/31 in Jan and then the 38 and i'll be doing all the others, i also know a Tree surgeon who's taking me climbing to get a feel for it, and maybe after that i may feel that i'll have to work for a company for a few years, have you any idea what the money is like for a 30 year old starting out, and im buying my own tools ,or would that not be necessary ??, Thanks Ian
  19. I hope im not sounding wreckless to you guys im not after rushing into this game head first, Im in no rush at all as i'll be doing this part time at first as my partner and me have a little girl and my partner is working full time, I have had no consistent work for the past year in own trade (Ceiling fixer/ Partitioner), so i've borrowed money to start a new career, so..... I need the books, the right tools to start me off, Any more Ideas guys, and thanks for the comments and ideas so far.
  20. Im thinking of just starting with small back garden tree's and working my way up.

  22. To set up on on my own Ian, Thanks in advance
  23. Myerscough college does not supply any equipment at all, they may have used to but not any more, the equipment and books im after are for tree surgery in general not for the courses, Im going to the Stihl store next week to buy everything i need to set up, any ideas ..?
