I'm just going to see what i find when i'm out there, buying a van/camper as soon as i get there and going to travel around to see what work i can find. 7. Yeah it will be hard work but instead of sticking to arb because its what i know id like to experience logging for how ever long.. so in 5 years time - arb isn't all i know, if you get what i mean. But if I find an arb job first im pretty sure ill take it. Cheers Derek, but i certainly wont be going to Oz - dont fancy the extreme temperatures etc out there..
  8. Ok, so how would you go about starting off? Are the british NPTC chainsaw maintenance tickets not of any use? British first Aid? Have you worked in a logging crew in NZ? Any info would be appreciated... Cheers
  9. Hi mate, sorry for the delayed reply, i must of missed your message! How did you end up in that position? Did you go out to NZ on a holiday or.....??
  10. That wage sounds pretty reasonable, and do you reckon that i could pick up a second hand saw at a decent price then, as i wont be flying out with one? I'm definately interested in working for a logging company as a feller, for the experience as my dad worked in the woods for years (now doing private tree work) and allways goes on about it being real man's work.. haha. Out of interest, do you know what an average wage would be working for one of the larger tree surgery firms? As a climber or groundie.. I've been browsing the jobs on trademe.nz for a few months, ill have another look now.. Cheers Taupotreeman and Silver Back -Will
  11. Cheers for all the info Taupotreeman, been a big help. I'm hoping to be in NZ by April, so if I dont end up finding a job with an arb company you might get a message on here off me regarding your contacts in the logging industry. I'll just see how things go.. Thanks again.... Will
  12. The long reply is much appreciated, cheers. I was planning on going out with a working holiday visa and doing some of the backpacker jobs around the country for a while just to experience the lifestyle and more of the country, and then looking for a job doing tree work. If I find one I can then apply for a work visa. Thats just what I had in mind but open to all options.. Is that Mt Ruapehu in your pic? Hoping to be doing some snowboarding there this NZ winter :-) Just another question, i dont know if you know much about because your obiviously a tree surgeon.. but ive been on trademe jobs and there seems to be quite a few jobs with logging companies. Have you had any experience or do you know anything about them? Been watching too much "Axe men" and running around setting chokers etc quite appeals to me. I dont know why though? lol... I like trees and get a buzz out of working hard maybe...
  13. Cheers for the reply mate.. Thats what I'm not sure about either and I have searched the web to try and find out if a working holiday visa is different from a work permit. I believe you can stay in the country longer with a work permit, - need to do some more googling!! Whats the difference in the working environment between the bigger outfits and the smaller ones??
  14. Hi, I'm going out to New Zealand for a working holiday in a couple of months, was just wandering if anybody knows whether there's much scope for finding some work with a tree surgery firm? I have cs30,31,38 and 39 - allthough i'd class my self as a groundie, still learning to climb! I believe your not supposed too be in full time employment on a working holiday visa. Would be great to have some of your advice..... Cheers
  15. Hi, cant help you work wise sorry, looking for work myself. Just interested in how you went about getting work abroad? Something i'm interesed in. Did you go just go out there and look for work or did you have something lined up? Will
  16. Teifi Forest and Field.
  17. Cheers for the reply, im in 2 minds at the minute whether to go into tree surgery or forestry work. Do you have any idea what the pay is like in forestry - ie the daily rate for someone driving harvesters or forwarders?
  18. Yeah i'm 20 yrs old so going to the prince's trust sounds like the best way, £500 should get me the basic chainsaw maintenence and cross cutting course and i'll see what the job centre can offer me aswell. cheers for the quick and helpfull replies.
  19. I've been out nearly 3months and did 3 years. I wasn't entitled to ELC for various reasons so i'm just trying to find either a company that will take me on, or if there are any ways of getting funding for courses.
  20. Cheers for the quick replies, yes ill join the FCA and see what i can find. Just looking for any tree work really - forestry/tree surgery. Just need to find some money some where to get the basic tickets. Does anyone know if you can get funding at all?
  21. Yes would definately be up for that. Just give us a shout when you need a hand. Ive got a bit of experience as my old man's in the business its just dont really get on that well so cant work for him. Ive got my own PPE and a saw, just no tickets. Whats the name of your business? Cheers Will
  22. Not excluding all tree work, id like to be using a saw but wouldn't mind getting my harvester and forwarder operator certificates. Cant afford to do any courses until i've found some work though.
  23. Forgot to mention, i'm interesed in either tree surgery or forestry work.
