  1. Well not sure thats what I'm coming for Reg, hope you arent there for that either!

    Its not my first trip out there, wasnt in tree work the last time. But tree's have taken me around the world abit, and BC is next on the list. Not on my own, me and the girlfriend, but there's nothing tying us to anywhere. Cheers for the help anyways, best book a flight.

  2. Coming out on a Work Visa, with a view to staying. Sounds like it could be difficult, contracting especially. Certainly good to know before hand. I was swayed to the island because of its climate. Maybe thats not a good reason. Being on a work visa hopefully means I can have a try with other places too I guess. Will certainly give Victoria a try though. Always up for a beer cheers.

  3. Thanks Stuart. Like I said, mostly due to the politics etc I favour the smaller firms. I see you are in Squamish, I wouldnt have thought there was much in the way of tree work there, quite a drive to the next towns. Do you get up to Whistler for work? I will contact Davey and Bartletts but hope to have some other options to explore when I get there. I was intending on bringing all my kit, whats the cost of gear out there vs the uk?

  4. Thanks Reg, I have looked at both Bartletts and Davey, I just seem to get on better with the smaller firms. I contract climb here, but I think a steady job out there will be the way forward. How does the industry fluctuate through the year? I did live in Van for a few months a few years ago and liked it but I just really fancy the island.

    Just received my Canadian Work Visa, valid for the next year. So now looking for work opportunities.

     

    I am an experienced climber, currently contract climbing, but looking for employment out there really. Well versed in all tree work. have worked around the UK, and spent a fair while in NZ.

     

    I am ideally looking for work on Vancouver Island, but open to other places.

     

    Any help or pointers very welcome.

  6. I doubt its the heater matrix, for 3 reasons. Firstly it would smell of anti freeze, second, the window would fog badly when using the heaters and get coated with a fine film of anti freeze, and third it would be using water, and start running hot.

     

    Had the matrix go on my old Hilux, and since getting a Mazda and having this problem I am almost certain its the sills filling with water.

  7. I have the same truck with the same problem, I havent found where it comes from, but it collects in the sills. Get underneath it, in the front of the sills there are 2 small rubber bungs. Pull them out and the sills should empty. As long as they dont fill up, the water cant over flow into the foot wells. Sorted mine out. A friend has a Ranger with the same problem.

  9. what if you base tie? i think its easier to clip your pre tied system straight onto your harness and simply install your c saver then put rope through and hey presto working system. hanging on your lanyard fiddling round , uniting knots and potentially dropping the rope doesn't sound very economical to me. you can just leave all the gear on the line or send it down the rope to your groundie

     

    I very rarely base tie, but when I do, admittedly there is alot of rope to pull back through the hitch. I dont have a seperate access line, so the system you describe wouldnt work for me. Once at the top, lanyard in, untie the choker knot of preference and clip the splice onto the hitchclimber, usually have to prgess a couple of crotches Ddrt anyway to get my final TIP. Impossible to drop the rope as it is never uncliped for my bridge! I find this simple, effective, and as the thread is based on getting started, economical on gear.

  10. I think if your croll and ascender are linked to your main ring its fine without a hitch.

     

    I was meaning in the picture posted there is no back up to the upper ascender, unless you count that tiny cord, tied directly to it, so you are relying completly on the croll, not good practice in my oppinion, as mentioned, toothed ascenders are hard on the rope, especially in a fall.

  11. I didn't really find a corollary that much better than a hitch honestly. And I would much rather fall on a hitch than a croll. A croll will cut your rope. If you have a hitch than it is a easy switch to ddrt. It's also possible to descend easily with the addition of any friction device like a Munter. With a croll, your pretty much stuck in up mode. Srt need not be expensive. I use a hitch quite often for my upper ascender as well.

     

    I also never use a croll.Makes a nice simple swap to Ddrt at the top, and more economical. Just check your hitch holds before you ascend. Mine is backed up to the upper accender anyway. I like your point that with only a crab it can also be used to decend, unlike anything toothed. That pic posted earlier has no back up does it? Looks like its just the croll as life support. Thats got to be a no no?
