  1. Why not look at doing something like a long distance forestry degree like what they offer at Bangor, while staying working as that would then allow you to keep your current job, thereby supporting your family before making any jump/causing added stress? H
  2. If its a pickup, Id look at an ifor or equivalent as they can be made secure. They turn up occasionally secondhand off ebay so I wouldnt buy new. H
  3. Everyone here is assuming that the vehicle itself is only plated to 3500kg. Some defenders (110s and 130s) were plated for anywhere up to 7t by the factory. This was for use in special applications where it was the pulling capability and the weight was not so much on the axles themselves. So in this case it would be more if the driver had the category up to 7500kg on his licence that would be my concern. H
  4. I fancied a 090 for my mill but in the end Ive managed to get an 084. There is a nearly new one (090) for sale in the states on ebay but you wouldnt have much change from £1500 by the time you'd brought it over. H

    4x4 insurance?

Just dont use Sureterm as they dont give you a no-claims. H
  6. Here are my ones....... a 1995 LHD Defender 110 and a 1987 with retro-fitted 200tdi. H
  7. ive got a 56" bar for my alaska mill in the shed. I bought it with the mill from the states. It does look funny on my husky 61 but should look grand on my 'stihl' 084! H
  8. I did the Forestry degree at Bangor (undergrad). If you have any specific questions drop us a message. I graduated 2 years ago. Work wise, the whole industry is very depressed atm across the British Isles so if you have any/lots of previous experience if you did the course, job prospects would be much better. I now work for the Irish Forestry Service (Coillte Teo). H P.S. loved Bangor!
  9. I think it has something to do with the marketing structure. A defender with that sort of engine would be amazing but would also directly compete with the discovery. It happened before when the tdis were in discovery/defenders as the discovery engine was down as more powerful than the defender one. Otherwise there may have been logistical problems in terms of fitting it and the TDV6 is fitted to a number of other vehicles and I think there was a shortage when the discovery was released. H
  10. Id look at getting some drains put in before anything as that will allow the ground to dry enough to allow other species in. Is there a river thats dumping its water into the woodland? Otherwise if you bring anything in they'll get stuck. Once it dries out abit, give it a medium thin, aiming to single out the trees. This will give you firewood but also allow more species and age class diversity. H
