    Old Elm

Been slicing up an old elm thats been down for at least 6 years. Problem is it just won't dry properly! Its all split and logged and under cover but on a damp day it seems to attract the moisture from the air and is actually covered with moisture. Anyone got any ideas, or is this just a characteristic of elm?
  2. I forgot to ay that the guard on the chain is a bit worthless. Nuts and bolts shake off in no time. My brother in law has an early one and thats okay but mines a more recent 'chinese' built one !
  3. I have a Portek one which works fine. I use a small electric saw with it and find it really safe and quick for small lengths up to about 5'. I keep the saw permenantly attached as its a fiddle to set up

  7. Been using a cut up old Addis bin myself, not as sturdy as yours mind!
  8. My mates all think I'm mad. Been running my own business in ladies fashions for 25 years and started a firewood business in March of this year. Reasons - healthy outdoor work, aching muscles, crap financial return but I still love it!! Age is no barrier. I'll be 60 next year. I've always believed you can achieve anything with enough motivation. If you want to do it, go for it m8
  9. Hi, I just started this year in the firewood supply business. Its been a very sharp learning curve and I am now re-evaluating the project with a view to expanding. Currently I have a small purpose built drying shed which also houses a splitter and chainsaw trestle. I've pretty much sold out of my small seasoned stock and have had to stop my advertising so I guess, yes I'm interested in a proposition. I am acutely aware of how long it takes to process the logs. What sort of equipment were you suggesting that you could send over? I've just ordered a new 26 ton splitter and am looking at purchasing a tractor with an attached fork lift to allow me to stack processed logs to season. Whatever happens I will be expanding to make a viable business of it during 2009. Be pleased to hear what you are suggesting?

  11. £50 a bulk bag of seasoned logs (delivered locally). Struggling to keep up with the splitting and bagging. Not done my Xmas shopping yet!!
  12. Been using it since last night and am still here and feeling ok, well I think so anyway!!!
  13. Tim, I've sent you a private message m8
  14. I think delivery is included on the price I was quoted. Can't remember exactly how much the quote was:001_tt1:, just so surprised to get them so cheap. Be able to charge £5 for customers who want to keep 'em too.
  15. I'll need to get the ladder and a torch and sit on the roof!! Let you know how I feel after I get out of intensive care from fumes and serious fall
  16. Just tried some in the wood burner. Goes well!
  17. I just haul them down the ramp of my trailer. Sometimes leave the bag if its an old lady! They usually let me have them back later.
  18. If its in the stove I can't smell it! Just wondered about the chemistry. Don't want to poison the sheep!!
  19. Apparently all parts of the tree contain the poison Cytisine, although the seeds are most poisonous
  20. Got some of this we cut last year. I know its poisonous but will toxins be destroyed by burning in a stove, does anyone know?
  21. Just ordered 200 today for under £3 each.
  22. I'm selling builders bag delivered locally at £50. Quite happy with that.
  23. There must be some regular delivery vehicles to Arran who could return with a load? Might need some basic packaging. I'm not far from you on the mainland. Perhaps we could work something out?
  24. If only Para Handy was still about!!
