  1. hmmmmmmmm, would be interseting to know a little more about the ropes used, Paolo's recearch is certainly much more relevent to our industry
  2. like rupe said it depends on the groundy, some groundies i use let logs run like pro's when snatching & some would struggle to remember how to rig the capstan, let alone rig (or work for that matter) with any sort of finess; and as a result i pay one double what i pay the other. Arial resque makes some1 much more employable/ valuable IMO.
  3. any 1 out there into their bonsi? i'm not but a good friend is & he has to prune their roots regularly as the canopy pruning does not prevent them from growing! as for mature trees a severe reduction may inhibit root growth but they will not die back. As for subsidence IT IS NOT caused by roots, their size or their growth but by their moisture uptake on a shrinkable soil. a harsh reduction will often lead to an increased water uptake not reduce it as previously thought.
  4. not a great system IMO as rupe said best to keep the systems seperate & def don't like that grab being used like that, a combination of events (wet rope, dynamic load, small defect at the wrong place at the wrong time) and you may well become a member of the flying squad. SRT should not be worked off in the UK access only i'm afraid.
  5. ring trust insurance, they'll sort you out, they do my PL, EL, PI & veihcle insurance, no one else could touch their prices
  6. yes i would & both rich Almond & Liam stressed that a 10 yr old item may well be perfectly fit for purpouse, in fact in the practical section of the exam they provided us with a very old but fully functional karabiner, any student that failed it failed the exam! what is PETZLS max replacement date then???? & how is it that u obtain the date that it began being used/exposed to sunlight then?many of my clients purchase replacement equipment long before it is required, i begin marking & inspecting it long before it is in circulation & it is stored in a locker between inspections un-exposed to sunlight, chemicals etc, etc. i am NOT the ONLY person who knows what he is doing and have never claimed so. I, however, am not the loler inspector who was un-able to obtain an apropriate SWL for a 16mm double esterlon was i bob?????............
  7. many ropes, slings & harnesses are treated to help limit the damage of uv rays! for example marlow are in the middle of installing brand new rope treatment macheinery as some was previously done out of house andy made a good point about all inspectors not singing from the same hymn sheet and i would put this down to 2 main reasons: 1 many loler inspectors are arguably not 100% compitant, they took the NPTC and thought GREAT im a loler inspector which is allot like a student pasing his cs 39 and thinking he's a tree surgeon! 2 some inspectors are led by romour/ become soo detatched from what its like to work on the ground that they are a tad "fail happy" i am curently undertaking a large, pioneering research project to quantify how significant defects to arb equipment are as well as compiling a data base containing all the relevent information needed by a loler inspector(some of which the manafacturors don't even know themselves), i'll keep u posted in the new year!
  8. what utter crap! i work with a number of arb equipment manufacturers & this sort of rumour really piss me off, i appologise for the opening 2 this reply but as it is quoting exactly what one of petzl top bods confirmed to me i find it most apropriate! age of equipment is not of primary concern when carrying out a 'thorough examination of arboricultural equipment' it is at most a contributory factor if any 1 out there wants a loler inspection doing by some1 not only compitent, who really does know what there on about but also knows what it's like to be an every day working tree surgeon feel welcome to give me a call on 07835 02 99 23 or follow my web address through the trade directory to loleruk 'the practical solution'
  9. a friend of mine worked on this case & all is not as it seems in the press after dragging the intruder to the ground in the street both the man & his brother hit him in the head with the bat. The defence was poor & the defendent made every mistake going when he made his poliece statement/interview & then in court, if he had ran a better defence he may have stood a chance. "as my client ran down the street after the intruder my client continued to fear for his & his families life perceiving the intruder to be collecting a weapon, as he dragged him to the ground the intruder reached repeadedly into his trousers which my client perceived etc. etc." intruders have been shot dead or injured by home owners in the uk, whilst (arguably) fleeing the property un-armed & no charges have been brought upon the home owner! but taht doesn't sellnewspapers! know the law, knowlege is power
  10. .....
  11. if u have keen eyesite you can install it from the ground with a bit of skill without resortong to a second throwline through the big ring, you need to use a slim throwbag which narrows at the end or mod one with some tape. but it really is much quicker to srt up there as allready mentioned above
  12. the date shouldn't really be relevent, preferable but not at all essential
  13. I operate a nationwide service, call 07835 029923, mike Loler UK
  14. what caused it to fray? i do see a fair few which need replacing but it usually lasts a year or 2 minimum, people do catch them as they tug their saw up whilst their strop is hanging, maythis be what happened?i will do some experimans 2 c if an extra layer of shrink tube will help to make it harder wearing without effecting the functionality & may relay youre concerns 2 ISC next time i chat 2 them, mind you,the vast majority of people have no complaints
  15. i operate nationwide (loleruk) and visit the SE 8 times a year, follow the link in the arbtalk trade directory to my site or ring 07835029923
  16. providing you don't need super fast speed & loads of memory get a Toughbook every day of the week! i used 2 go through at least 1 laptop per year (fair bit of use & abuse) and my wife goes through 1 every 2 years (no abuse!) mouse pads breaking, screens cracking, keyboard breaking, solder snapping the list goes on, got quite a high spec cf-18 now and has had 2 years of hardcore abuse being chucked in & out of the car, falling off the bed, dust rain etc. no whiring as it has no fan! no need 2 worry about the surface u place it on (bed sofa etc)
  17. who trained you 2 b a loler inspector? prehaps you should ask them whether or not they effect the function or safety It most certianly IS esential, please don't pay 2 much attention to the abouve post:thumbdown: not only am i a very experianced loler inspector but i work quite closely with ISC & I can assure you on Wayne's behalf that without the wire SPRING it is not safe & would not have obtained its PPE CE mark!
  18. ring trust insurance or visit Tree Surgery Insurance, Arboricultural Insurance, Tree Surgeon Liability Insurance, Commercial Vehicle Insurance, Fleet Insurance - Trust Insurance & they'll find the cheapest deal for you! tell them mike from loleruk sent you & they'll look after u
  19. PPE does not always reduce risk TRAINING DOES (IMO) have you spoke to the chap about it? It does sound utterly ridiculous & CE marking binds retailers not the end user!
  20. nice machine mark, i'll be sure 2 give any1 asking your number
  21. No port-a-wraps are CE marked & they do not need to be, loler inspecting a home made/ bespoke device is not always possible, however, it may sometimes be possible. i have previously been able to over see the manufacture of a bespoke device, having them tested destroying 2 and then appropriately proofing the remaining 3 of a batch of 5. Developing & testing equipment is complex & i would not encourage any1 without extensive expertise to attempt it. The diameter of the bars on the device is far from the knowledge/ expertise you'd need to develop/ manufacture your own device, how’s your knowledge of heat treatment?? (perhaps done in a sealed quench atmosphere controlled furnace)?? electro plating in line with EN362:2004?? There are plenty of good, reasonably priced devices on the market & can't really see any benefit in copying one of them. If you perceive that you have a significant innovation then perhaps you should approach an expert with it.
  22. thats cool, but thad'd be explorers 14-18 no? still PM me your no though will b intersesting 2 c what u do
  23. i visit a friend at bishop every now & then will prob b up this sundy as it happens, If u PM me ur no we could go see that taunting mistress of yours & discuss it a little further
  24. "treatment & prevention of Phytophthora in trees(in the UK)" you got several areas from here: the options, their legalities, costs & success rates Are you at bishop then? & what course r u on???
  25. he won't be able 2 access ur details but this is definately a scam, his paypal acount won't be his own or it will be linked to some1 elses bank acout (who doesn't know it) he will also probably tell you how he will have to overpay you as 'i cant access this bank acount at sea' and ask you to transfer the overpayment via Western Union your bank will accept his payment as legit at first, it'll clear into your account & he'll be strait on the phone getting u 2 transfer the money, no-one will even turn up 2 collect the bike & then ur useless bank will un-clear the funds!!! Got a Friend in the fraud squad U don't want 2 know how many people get done by this sort of scam!
