  1. Jedediah Smith redwoods ... trunk diameter 28.6 ft. DBH Could be the largest known diameter DBH presently living, for Coast Redwoods. It's not a big tree though. On a ridge, top blown out, fire damage, etc.. But still alive, single stem, and relatively sturdy base even though the middle is burned quite a bit.
  2. The One Log Truck along Avenue of the Giants.
  3. This image will not be entered, but just adjusted and ordered a test print this morning, hoping to make it a pair for sale with the other posted earlier. The wide angle lens magnified her foot which was closest to the lens, so I adjusted the foot to 1/2 size, and added a canvas texture.
  4. Top of a redwood ...
  5. She does part time modeling. She's the same who helped the my giant redwood tree photos, wearing the long colorful dresses. We worked together on photos about 9 times. Usually, we included an extra outfit or idea. This water reflection was a spontaneous add-on when we were leaving the forest and noticed excellent lighting and shadows in one area.
  6. Yes .. it was chilly. I tried one adjustment removing her nipple, but it it did not improve the image at all. So I left her form looking more or less natural. I did another portrait indoors in portland where smoothing over the breast worked best. But in this redwood forest shoot it's the opposite.
  7. Heard that there's a photography contest in Del Norte county (California, USA) annually near the Harbor. Decided to give a shot at entering 4 images this autumn. 4 is the limit, and it was a trip trying to narrow-down which 4 to go with. All are tree or forest related in some way. Here are the 4 images I hope to enter.
  8. Shot a Jamaican in the redwoods. Here's both. One shooting the other. Spent a day in the redwoods, with a family from Jamaica.
  9. Not sure what your climate is like. In Portland, we can see 90 degrees F. by late May sometimes and 100 once in a while with 82 F. average most of July and August. If the top is cut off in summer, there can be sunburn damage to top tissue. I try to avoid hedge cutting that reduces a lot, in spring, when birds are nesting. I don't like facing having to deal with exposed nests. Just the way I think. May not matter to others ... just leave them there to bake in sun or become prey. When cutting, I tilt the blades slightly each pass back and forth. For the more part, hedges are my least favorite pruning and I seem to keep it to maybe 1% of my work these days, if that.
  10. Kiera, a model who helped me the past couple years, moved down to San Diego. So I needed a replacement. I put an ad under Gigs online. From about 6 replies, I decided to go with Francesca of Brookings, Oregon, for a model in the redwood coast area.
  11. Here's a photo from Jedediah Smith, with Francesca, from Brookings, Oregon.
  12. Crescent City, by Jedediah Smith redwood park, a few nights ago ...
  13. About 40 minutes after taking this photo posted earlier, we saw and took photos of bears in the other attached. That was fairly recent. No close encounters on foot, but seen black bear in the forest or driving, about 6 times in the past few years.
  14. This is in the area he referred to, about 30 minutes north of the California state redwood park Jedediah Smith. The photo shows the coastline near Brookings, on the north side of Harris Beach State Park.
  15. If you catch this note tonight or early morning before you head to the Avenue, look for the Grieg French Bell loop i posted in post 223 It's at the north portion of the Avenue of the Giants. Decent size turnout and marked with a decent size sign at the edge of the grove. Mattole Rd. and Bull Flats is awesome too. I'm headed down just after the 15th this coming month / July
  16. Evidently you had a fine adventure. Picked a good trunk to pose with. I like going across from the same trailhead every so often, too. Here's a portrait from the same park, about a year ago. The woman works at the Casino along Howland Hill Rd., just outside the same park. Photos taken at the Simpson Reed loop off the paved Hy. 199, parking near Walker Rd.
  17. Several photos of Carson Mansion I posted to Facebook recently, with a closer look at eh workwork detail.
  18. Motorcycles in Avenue of the Giants.
  19. This photo was taken a few days after the Lupine flower photo posted previously. The man in this photo is from Germany, and we did did a couple days worth of exploring together. Posted this also in the Bigfoot redwood thread.
  20. Maybe my favorite image so far, of the Carson Mansion in Eureka ... close to the beaten track.
  21. This is off the beaten track of an urban sort. But in old town Eureka, found a place called The Wine Spot that was a nice stop.
  22. Here's Gerald Beranek with 4 Danes at Avenue of the Giants ... last weekend.
  23. One of the links from my main redwood page (signature) Seven Wonders of the Coast Redwood Forests. Seven Wonders of the Coast Redwoods
  24. For those who haven't followed my FB page "Redwood Forest" ... this could be a new one for you. Redwood National and State Parks .... single trunk. Chris Atkins for scale.
  25. There's at least two species that stem could be. One is Sitka Spruce that may have grown right next to the redwood ... or ... another stem of Coast Redwood that died. Whichever one it was, it's a dead stem, but quite photogenic.
