  8. im told the infra red camera is the only truely uninvasive method except the visual, they can even check the roots for rot etc as the rotting roots create heat different from the normal average tree. i got my information from a surveyor in scotland who has a picus tomograph
  9. anyone got any info on this ? its for a project at college and im struggling to find anything about it so i thaught you guys mite be able to help as more brains make it that bit easier cheers in advance guys any help really appreciated
  10. that looks like a good 1 to learn on
  11. unfortunatly space was limited and we didnt have a winch onsite but however, ive done crown breakdown before and it was more have a go myself and see what happens n learn by my mistake, i spoke to the lad i was working with and he said when the cut closed up i should have came to the butt end and tried to drop it a bit further but none the less i had done fairly well for my little experience. thankfully i learn fast so i wont be doing that in a hurry again lol. im doing my training at the barony college LSD im on the ND arb course at the mo
  12. i want one of those blood stopper sachets for my kit, 20 quid is a small amount if it saves my or someone elses life
  13. was that at your yard stevie ? what is the sort of best way to do it if the but end is high in the air ? the top was a kinda poplar shape in a sence, well it was wen it was on the ground
  14. looked at the pics again and i now see its just the angle of the cam woops. yeah that could have been done for sure, in fairness to the climber today it was to gain me more experience on smaller stuff, the diameter would only be about 112 - 15 inches maybe at the thickest point anyway
  15. yeah thats kinda obvious not to do lol even i can see from the picture that it will just drop on him given a chance, also hes using a 200t on the ground which im led to believe is a big no no ?
  16. ive done a 1 day red cross course specific to arb and forestry, im told that it is more than enough for the job and on a personal level, its ilegal to turn a blind eye to someone needing first aid if you are qualified tho lol. i also had an in house qualification as a h+s inspector when i was working for wolseley uk (drain center) was the manager for a period in there n had to learn it but its all changed and its different from arb
  17. ive done my small n medium fells adam, just need to sit my assesments when i get the cash together. didnt really get taught as such its more a case of this is how you fell a tree now go sned it lol. im happy with trees that are below chest hieght but when they are above my head hieght with the limbs like it was today i get really nervous. only got 2 injurys in a sence from today and thats a sore hip and knee from climbing a tulip tree to do my first ever big limb drop but the pain (old ice hockey injurys agrovated) was well worth it
  18. pictures would be brilliant john, anything to help is much appriciated. sorry if it sounds like im making what happened into a laugh in a sence, it is not meant that way its just how i deal with things that have scared me or disheartened me. there is always a brighter side is my moto
  19. could have done with big bob then there would have been a good 30 + inches between me and the timber lol it really was a awkward beasty, all the limbs were on the under side and the sides if you imagine it as a square, no top limbs really. the way it landed it seemed to have compression both sides (on the flat and the slope) i had removed as much as i was brave enough to do n then thaught yeah il take that wieght off n then it wasnt such a big piece to drop, hmmm that didnt goto plan lol was fine after it had sortof end for ended and sent the limbs up the way lol
  20. so basicly there is no safe way as such but to be very very aware and quick on me feet ?
  21. just re read my post lol, when i say get it to the ground i mean how to safely remove the limbs without it rolling towards me ? whilst on the ground but limbs holding it up if that makes sence ?
  22. it was the top out of a sycamore that was on the ground, the ground was awkward, steep banking on 1 side of the tree and semi level the other side. it wasnt a very mature syc, maybe only 50ft at the most. got a hell of a scare from it like and will certainly think alot more whilst doing it
  23. i was half way through breakdown and had looked at it and thaught yeah il take the wieght of the end and carry on just getting smaller n smaller i cut through and it sat down and closed the cut up so i gave the piece a kick and the whole lot dropped towards me narrowly missing me because i thaught it would sit up with the amount of branches still on it
  24. hows this coming together now ?
  25. was breaking down a crown today and had a near miss, hold my hands up should have stopped and looked again but wasnt really sure how it was gonna go so i took a chance. so im wondering if anyone has any tips on how to read the behaviour i suppose of the tree ie tension and compression and how to drop it to the ground without getting hurt ???? i wasnt hurt but it could so easily have been worse live and let learn
