  1. I couldn't open this thread quick enough when I saw the title...you got me panicking then!!! lol:sneaky2:
  2. I suggested that but the guy was happy with them as they were. He said he may trim at a later date.
  3. Here are the pics, reduced them all by about 5 - 6 foot. They had all been topped some years ago so they had mutiple stems coming up which made it more interesting. Not as impressive as red squirrel but we all have to start somewhere.
  4. Great job mate and fair play for doing it all with a silky - I bet the arms were aching the next day lol. I actually did my first ever job at the weekend but nothing as spectacular as that. Just topped nine conifers in a neighbours garden, again all I used was a silky but it got the job done and I was quite pleased with myself. They all looked level anyway!! If I get chance I post some before and after pictures.
  5. Believe me I wish we could spend more time learning the practical stuff than doing assignments like this.
  6. I'm heading down to my local Arboretum at the weekend to see whats about. I just thought I'd ask on here also because of the vast amount of knowledge that is about. I had to do a autumn winter project just before christmas and I found the arboretum very useful, but if I can get any suggestions it would definitely speed up the whole assignment. Cheers
  7. Currently doing an assignment at college in which I have to write about 25 trees or shrubs that have Spring or Summer interest. The interest can be the flowers/fruit or anything else as long as it appears during these seasons. So far I've included a few cherries(flowers), horse chesnut (flowers), Blackthorn (flowers) but am starting to run thin on ideas. Anything Prunus would be the obvious choice however I want to vary my selection if possible. Any suggestions would be greatly received. Many thanks.
  8. Very funny....crime doesn't pay!!
  9. Haix protector pro here....finding them really comfy and after doing 3 weeks of canal side work they kept my feet dry throughout.
  10. Still having problems when I log in. It redirects to an unknown page and the only way I can get back in is going to google and doing a search for arbtalk, clicking on the link and then it redirects me back in. Confusing, but least I'm now in:confused1:
  11. It mentions using thread lock each time you screw them back in. I think I'll have to get some just to be sure.
  12. I've just bought the sequioa SRT and find it very comfy. One thing that does slightly worry me though is the screws coming lose in the gold gates. How is everyone finding these? Are they holding up to daily use? Also, something I've noticed in the instructions that you get with the harness is that the attachment bridge and each side D ring are only rated to 15kN. This seems quite low to me considering most karabiners are rated to 30kN. Any comments. Sorry if this sounds a bit stupid :blushing:but I'm still at college and this is the first harness I have bought and was just interested what other people thought. Thanks Gary
  13. I've been told by my boss that without a CSCS card you cannot work on a construction site. I have taken the CSCS this morning and its a very easy test that can easily be completed in 15 minutes although you are allowed 45 minutes in total if you require it.
  14. Currently wearing Haix protector pro and they are very comfortable
  15. I'm currently 4 months into my NA Arb and I have just been given an assignment to do over christmas on tree surveys. One of the bits I'm struggling to find info on is the following:- 'Discuss the potential legal consequences for a tree owner who does not have trees surveyed and inspected' and 'explain the potential legal consequences for the individual who carries out tree inspection and surveying'. Does anybody know any good books or websites that would have any information relating to any of this and tree surveys as a whole? If anyone can help I would be very grateful. Thanks
  16. I'm 32 yrs old and just started the NA Arb for 3 days a week. I have managed to find work for two days a week with a local firm and I'm getting £50 a day. I'm told this is the going rate for a newbie. If you are looking for some extra help around June time I'm looking to relocate with the wife and you sound like a great boss!!?
  17. Had my stretch airs for about a month and when I knelt down today the zip went. I can do it back up but everytime I try and kneel down it goes again. Really peed off considering how much I paid for them. Do you think I should send them back to who I bought them from or contact Pfanner directly. I've been really pleased with them otherwise but this put a real downer on my day.

    bad news

Very sad news. My tutor keeps drilling into me the dangers of kickback and this highlights it in a very tragic way. Sympathies to family and friends.
  19. Is there plenty of work in Scotland? Me and the missus have thought about moving there after I've finished my NA Arb.
  20. I would have blamed the dog!!
  21. Because the tree had been down for quite a while and the wood seemed quite dry I tried burning some at the weekend and to my surprise it wasn't too bad. So much so I've been to get some more - its free after all !!
  22. Does anybody know if Horse-Chestnut would make good firewood and does it take much seasoning? We have recently been cross cutting some at college and was wondering whether I could use it on the fire. I've noticed in a book that I have parts of it are toxic. Does this rule it out? Cheers
  23. Hi everyone, I know it's probably not the best time to be asking for some work due to the current economic climate, but needs must. I've just started a 1 year National Award at Brooksby Melton college which is only three days per week so for the remaining two days (Tuesday & Friday) I would like to gain some employment within the industry if possible. I'm prepared to do anything such as labouring, chipping, filling chainsaws up, making tea you name it? I just want to get a foot in the door and get some practical experience from within the industry. I'm not afraid of hard work and I'm totally commited to making a go of it in this industry. I'm really enjoying the course so far but would like to start working with experienced people within the industry to further my knowledge. During the course I will be taking my CS30,31,38,39 and should have at least one or two by Christmas. I've already had some experience of chipping at college so quite confident with that. I already have chainsaw trousers, boots and helmet so no problems there. I also have a clean pre 97 driving licence which I've heard is pretty handy to have. If there is anyone out there from the Leicester, Melton or surrounding area who has anything available or knows someone that may be able to help I would really be interested to hear from you. Thanks Gaz
  24. Sorry not sure how you upload the pictures yet. I'll try again??
