Depends on how heavy duty it has to be in relation to material you are moving timber and aggregate wise a fordson major, david brown selectamatic, Massey Ferguson 165 or nufffield are all good choices good range of parts available and all still capable of a good days work, id personally choose a fordson major, easy to work on can drop a ford cargo engine straight in for extra power if needed can get a 3 tonne winch on the back and mower etc so universal id expect to pay anything from 800-1000 for a half decent one a bit more for a restored painted up one same for the other tractors above although massesys can be dearer and multi power ones can be troublesome if you want something a bit bigger and 4wd zetor are a good choice cheaper than more well known brands although pretty basic they are well built can get one for anywhere between 1000-2000

UThanks for the advice guys. Yeah I meant 3.5 gross weight, will be pulling a fergie tractor and topper/logsplitter most of the time, but will need sides for logs and carrying round bales of hay for wides horses!! So will take advice and price in what I need and see what figures I come up with, the only benefit of this one is I know exactly what it has done as its only had one owner being used for moving coils of land drain pipes, hadnt thought about buying new but may look in to it, wont be used everyday so not sure if I can justify a brand new one would be nice though!!

has any one else had issues with husky 357xp starting to shake themseves to bits after a while, i find im constantly tightening up the screws holding exhaust and main handle up, cutting gear sharp and depths ok and av mounts changed regular any ideas what the cause may be? also it has started the annoying habit of stalling as soon as i put it down then have to choke to re start again any ideas have tinkered about flushed fuel system out etc but no luck up till now has been an awesome saw any advice appreciated thanks:thumbup1:

just after a bit of advice ladies and gents thinking of selling my ifor williams twin axle trailer as its too small to fit my tractor and topper on, i need to sell this to fund buying a bigger trailer. a mates dad has an indespension twin axle for sale will take 3 and a half ton good tyres floor brakes etc but has no sides and no ramps and he is asking £1000. do you think this is a realisitic price without sides and ramps as its just essentially a flat bed at the moment and i would have to buy ramps and sides for it to be any use. Any advice would be appreciated cheers

i have been meaning to do the isa for a while, i have the old workbook so would probably need to update it for new questions extra? just wondering if you had to become an isa member to take exam?

i did some work with the company i previously worked for, for Griff Rhys Jones, went and did work at his house a couple of times, really nice place only met him the once though and that was briefly, he spent most of the time poking about in the undergrowth and tapping trees with a stick!!

hi everyone not sure iof right place to post this but here goes off on holiday to devon/north cornwall border near Bude on saturday, just wondered if anyone local may be able to tell me if there are any good arboretums or cool tree places to visit. i have looked up in internet but can only find obvious ones like Exmoor and Dartmoor national park. May get in trouble for taking work with me as supposed to be on honeymoon !! but seems a shame not to take a look at some places while there!! cheers fellas

hi joe, the chainsaw sawbenches are quite good i have used a few before, im suprised you havent got a big sawbench for the back of your dexta yet!!

i also worked for Mick for several years, throughout my time with him at eastwoods he helped and encouraged me to progress as a climber and a tree surgeon with training and by giving me the opportunity to just get out there and do the job, i appreciated everything he did for me, RIP Mick

i can honestly say i wouldnt choose to retrain in anything else, sure it has its bad days but imo the good definately outways the bad, nothing like going home after a big takedown or reduction thats gone just right, not many jobs where you get such a mixed group of people who all genuinely enjoy their job as you do in the tree world either, just my opinion anyway!
