  1. But what I mean by pace is more than just hard work. I've seen people work there nuts off but still fail to complete the task because they are not efficient. An efficient working team can achieve more than simple hard work. But that efficiency needs learning. The simple act of avoiding an idiot pile can take some people 6 months to learn.
  2. Sounds like you have it covered. I meant to add that you welding skills are very useful as well as your (I assume) pre 97 driving license? I'd employ good drivers over good climbers, in the first instance, they are more useful.

  4. Not if the split tether and the HC are on the same side of the biner? And then if you use a neck tie that could go on the other end of same biner? I'm just thinking outload here, I know nothin! (no g) Kits in the post. Here tomorrow. I'm on holibobs for a week so wont get to try it for while............
  5. Not read this whole thread, I'm just jumping in at the end! Ive met a lot of 40 somethings who want to "re-train" or have recently "re trained". I say "re-trained" because there is some confusion about NPTC certs being training for an arb career, and in my opinion they are not. They a safety certificates. The actual re-training is the first 5 years or so of tree work, and that ideally needs to be full time day in day out climbing or working with a climbing crew at a pace of work that is commercially viable. Get through that and your sorted!! I think its the pace of work that can be a bit of a shock. Any tree company with work to do must have won that work somehow and most have to quote against other companies to win the work. So the work then needs to be done at pace, and at minumum costs (I mean efficiently and without damaging kit) in order to scrape a reasonable profit. But, yes, if your fit and can learn and can get a job then there's no reason why not. Interesting that you do long triathlons. I only do Olympic distance at the moment and an olympic triathlon on a sunday is easier than some days at work, but of course some days at work are much easier aswell. I did a sprint tri the day after an olympic one last year and getting out of bed for it felt exactly the same as on a tuesday or wednesday after some climbing work. I'm 46 and glad I did the 5 year training in my 20's!
  6. So a normal tether just sits oneside of the HC? Bit messy for my OCD! Can it go on top hole of HC away form hitch terminations? (Yes would need an extra krab, so still not tidy)
  7. Still got two convoys, 52 plate and a 55, both have about only 60+K miles on and going strong! Yes, brakes need sorting regularly but thats not a problem. Wouldnt touch a maxus with a bargepole!

  9. So the companies you "sub" to don't have trained ground staff? Do they have aerial rescue certified staff or chainsaw users? Should these companies be taking on dismantling jobs in the first place??
  10. No Steve, I'm same as you. Dont get the point. If I lost the fluid feel of climbing just to be a bit quicker then I wouldnt enjoy "work". Its not really work if you enjoy it so going through a learning process again would feel like work. I only climb 2 0r 3 days a week at the most when its busy, I have other climbers available. I do have lots of srt kit, home made Haas etc and every ascender available, so I do use srt for access and totally get that, but my system is not great, and changes everytime I try it. Tempted to get a proper haas velox, and I need new boots so might get the ones with ct ascender attachment point (they look nice!). I did have the first rope wrench but didnt get on with it, this was before you all got the idea of stiff tethers. I lent it to someone and have not seen it since!! So might get another to try now and then. So, I am interested on how your getting on. Also, as I like to train employees as best as I can I feel I ought to be keeping up with new things, even if I dont use it everyday or for every climb.

  13. Found on acacia, with some decay below them from an old bark wound. The top of the tree is dying back on the same side so its fairly terminal. Any ideas of the name of this one?
  14. Would you happen to have the drivers door pocket? I need one for the new van.

  17. It was tricky with route planning, where you rope needed to be was not the same line as where you had to go to get there if that makes sense? But not too tricky, I'm aching now though, getting too old!
  18. I have plenty that want theirs pollarded, and they get pollarded, and that doesnt make for very good photos. Occasionally they dont want it pollarded so it doesnt get pollarded and so it makes a nice photo thats worth posting. Back to felling, topping and pollarding tomorrow so I wont post pictures.

  21. Nice day in Fairford today. The mill is the picture postcard image of the town so didnt want to mess that up too much!
  22. Also we now have a valeting company move in next door so everything will be polished every month for £20! Result.
