No, you can leave your mouldy helmet where it is thanks.!
  2. Yep, figure 8 "should" be backed up, I don't always though, and a munter is even more unsafe. Simple decision to make really, or just use it very carefully. I used to use it often to come down the pulling rope before felling a stem, but am slightly more aware these days.
  3. "Allowed" is deabtable. No ones going to turn up and tell you off. If you let go of the rope you will hurt yourself, and you know you would be in the wrong. Other than that, just don't hurt yourself. Its not a secure method, rock climbers would only use it a last resort for descending or belaying.

    chin strap

Good point. They were supposed to be attached with dowm head bolts with the nut on the outside but many were attached with waht ever came to hand. We have husky helmets that live in the chipper hopper for chipping, and petzl ones (without visors) in our climbing bags for climbing.

I think that in many people's minds the husky peakless IS still a climbers helmet. I've personally never owned or worn one, I went directly from earmuffs on a headband to a petzl ecrin roc in about '95-96. I have a good collection of old mouldy ecrins! Vertex is the best IMO. Unless you want to look like a power ranger, then go for the stein one, or "le helmet stain" as they say in france!

    chin strap

No, but, they are the only manufacturer (that I know of) that has cut the peak off there helmets with what looks like it might have been a jigsaw, cutting right throught the date stamp, and then called the helmet the climbers version. So the husky helmet with no peak and a chin strap is often sold as a climbers helmet. Or has been in the past, don't know if they still are.
  7. I missed the last few pages of this thread but the start was good!! My thoughts are sometimes towards what the tree is going to be like to work on in the future. Lets say he's done a good job for the customer and has been paid etc. Its likely they'll call him back in 10 years time for more work. That tree will be a nightmare to work on then!! Even when we cut back trees hard at customers requests, we still bring the sides in and leave it managable in the future, that is as important as its appearance at the end of the initial works IMO. A Lime is better off pollarded and managed than reduced in this manner with the sided untouched, and reduction in height only is a poor job spec for virtually anything other than Leylandii. I had a look at his website and amazingly on the links page there is a direct link to this thread!!

Nope, ground use only really. Of course anything is better than nothing though.
  9. I think bonuses should or could be given for bringing in (profitable) work, but not for getting work done quicker than estimated as that causes problems as raised above already. If you get a job done early then you get the reward of having a nice afternoon of washing all the vehicles, what more could a conciensus employee ask for?? Its all very well getting a job done quickly but if you haven't got another one available to book in at very short notice then its all for nothing. Soemtimes we have a pile of small council jobs that we can dip into whenever we choose but at 2-3pm its hard to find the motivation! Finishing a few hours early doesn't actually save any money anyway. Of course getting a job done a whole day earlier is a good thing as its saves a whole journey out to the job so that is a genuine saving, it makes it easier to book another job into that spare day and goes towards those wet days when nothing gets done at all.

    chin strap

Its not a climbing helmet. The chin strap (if you can get one) is next to useless and the helmets does not have the required side impact protection, put the visor on it and use it for chipping.
  11. Smaller I think. I was looking from a distance!! Honest!
  12. I got them wrong the other day, got told off by the client! I said Judas tree, feeling all clever and that, and she said no its a toffee tree!! (katsura)
  13. A different use for the helmet cam. This is walking towards crib goch on friday evening last week, lovely and warm and clear skies at a bout 7pm. Its not edited, just chucked straight onto youtube so don't expect anything exciting to happen! You get the jist of how nice it is up there in the first minute, after that its just more of the same. UK&I Results

No he'll be a guest climber, he can win the UKI (as he has done a few times now) but not represent the UK at the worlds. Well done Rhys, bout time mate!! great job by Owen aswell!!
  15. Thanks. Still some text to go on, but I havn't decided yet. You've been away, check my dual mass thread out, and if yours is dual mass get it changed to a normal one at the first sign of clutch problems. http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/large-equipment/16812-ldv-transit-dual-mass-flywheel-clutch.html
  16. Here ya go, 53 plate and low mileage (38,000) can look quite tidy, but I wouldn't sell this one for 5K !!
  17. I guess you mean 3grand? Yes you will see bargains with LDV's, that is why they are so good. 05 plate that new would probably have high mileage which might be a problem. You can also get 02-03 plate ones with low mileage for the same sort of price, and they tend to be neater looking than high miles ones, but reliability is down to good servicign not miles (hi or low miles) I prefer low milieage and less dents scratches etc. then I know I can screw it up instead of buyign someone elses screw up. Don't touch any without the digital mileometer (before 02 I think) they are crap and the new ones (maxus??) isn't really an LDV and is not worth looking at. Soon they will be even cheaper than a good 05 LDV.

    Aaac. Sole traders?

Thats sounds about right, and in that instance that you describe, the "subbies" are not bona fide sub contractors, they are just subbies for you for the day and included in your RA etc and H&S infrastructure as you put it, so under control of the main company and that companies insurance policies.
  19. Rupe

    Aaac. Sole traders?

I'm sure they would, and do, have that condition already in Place Andy. Its no different to having to ensure that all employees have the right certs for the work that they do. But to be "pukka". the hired in help doesn't need to be AAAC. I've just realised this is in the AA section, not the general chat! So I'll keep my general chat type comments out and leave it to Paul to give the correct response.

    Aaac. Sole traders?

Its the management and the staff at the time of the assessment. Lots changes in between without re assessment all the time. I've done rigging for AAAC assessments for other firms and my paperwork gets included in the whole package, then the firm can use me or anyone else once passed.
  21. Rupe

    Aaac. Sole traders?

Yes, the "subbies" being used would have to pass the criteria for the AAAC assessment and subsequent re assessment but in the time inbetween he "could" use anyone he felt like!
  22. Rupe

    Aaac. Sole traders?

Do you mean that you would pass all your work to other companies then? Or to other sole traders who hire in their own groundies etc? You can be an AAAC and only use self employed climbers etc if thats waht you mean, you don't need to use bona fide sub contractors. you can hire in your own staff as required.

    Harness

One of these? Yes, its ok. Its a work positioning and fall arrest harness. You ony need the work positioning bit. You could remove the shoulder straps if you want to, but as long as you attach via the lower front attachment and use the side D's then it is a work position harness, so yes. Somoene else will probably quote an EN number or something that it hasn't got, and say that its not to be used at all ever, but essentially it would work fine and get you started.
  24. Yeah, I think its too big! it will be ok. I got a small one on my car and that looks fine.
  25. Not my mobile number, no way! I never answer it if I don't know who it is! If I do answer it I never right anything down and then I forget I even got a phone call let alone what its about! Home number only so it goes on answer phone and I can listen when I'm ready, once customers get a quote, then they will have my mobile number, but I still won't answer it!
