im not saying its a bad wage im just struggling to want to cut lines on that, espescially when i have a higher potential earning when working self employed and as you say its what i would prefer to do. in six months time i'll know for sure but i dare say that it'll be too late by then

i have worked lines before and i agree with you to a point, line clearance can be rewarding, but i found it quite samey, and i hated mullering nice trees like big veterans, its ok for a while and then i start getting depressed

I WISH, if that were the case then id bite their hand off, that sort of steady salary for a guy like me just out of college would be pukka no there offering me about £65 a day after tax. that is why i had the doubts in the first place

i understand where your coming from mate but i think i will be able to rake in enough to tick over, i know businesses are struggling but the work seems to be out there. besides, having spoken to the missus she's on side. years ago i had a dead end job that i hated and was a grumpy bugger. she doesn't want that again

this isn't realy an option woodpicker as i am contracted to work 5 days a week for the utility company and will not be able to wind one down as one picks up. i have thought about doing this but i dont think id be able to keep up contacts in the industry as easily so im sure that if i took the utility job then i would more than likely get distracted from the domestic work and find it hard to get back in to it. i think my mind is made up now, i just need to sit down and do the sums thanks for your advice guys, now i just need to tell the missus why im turning down a permanent job for the risk of freelance!

ah but is that what will make me happy and actually the moneys not bad, nice to have someone say that i should go for the permanent job but i find it too easy to persuade myself to steer clear of it, i dont think line clearance is for me. as the other guys have said i think its better to be poor than unhappy

other than job security sse is off my list you guys are right i think. i need to get out there and give it 100% on getting more work in and stick with it. i love the work i do now and have no interest in line cutting. i know tree cutter stu will do enough line cutting for all of us anyway. i have to hand the contract for SSE in 7 days, i think it may stay unsent.

wicked, i did a dismantle on a lime that was shot after i came down we felled the pole and the hinge snapped at about a foot and a half, i reckon we could have pulled it over between us without touching it with a saw. yours was taller though and there isn't much sound wood at all, good work mate

theres no way they'd take me on part time or as a subby otherwise i'd bite their hand off. my worry is that i'll turn it down and then work will dry up, if i could get a promise for two days a week from someone then that would be great. my heart says to avoid what i wont enjoy but my head says to do whatever brings in the money that said if i work three days a week as a freelance climber I can earn more than a weeks wages with the utility company i was with you Steve regarding never working on the lines but it seems madness to be turning jobs down at the mo. you all seem to be saying i should follow my guts and do what I enjoy but that leaves me thinking, "what if?" it's a risk but is it better to be happy in your work and poor, I think it probably is otherwise I would not be in this business at all

i have been offered a job for good money with an organisation that i have no interest in joining. the work would be line clearance and my passion is with domestic or risk reduction arboriculture. i have enough work at the mo to tick over but no great offers yet, do i hold out with the odd bits im doing at the mo for a few small companies or do i go for the security of a jopb i wont enjoy. i am worried that if i work for the utility company then i will lose contact with domestic arboriculture. is it wrong to go in to a job, knowing i won't enjoy it? is it wrong to risk going self employed and leaving the missus to pay the bills? has anyone made the decision to work for a company and regretted it? are the rewards from working self employed or in a job you enjoy more than not having the stresses of money? im stuck as to what to do any advice is appreciatedpositive, negative or outright rude cheers

give me rain any day rather than what we had today. we had to stop work today as both climbers, myself included were wobbly on their feet. not safe to work when your in that condition. im in a river all day tomorrow so that cheers me up:001_smile:
