  1. I dunno, you finally get three weeks away from climbing trees and the opportunity to look around NZ with the wife and here's Drew trying to talk you in to a climb already. All I can say is the Mrs must be very understanding and Drew, give her a break for goodness sake
  2. I think he meant ascend TO the first limb though I could be wrong.
  3. I'm working all weekend unfortunately bro but if I get time on Sunday after my other jobs I'll give you a buzz and we can catch up.

  4. One of my work colleagues got lippy ( so we think) with some a few months ago. Got a good bashing and a broken leg for his troubles. Still not back at work. Not sure how we got here from visiting Redwoods though. Sorry for the derail.
  5. Not so much bloods and crips but Black Power, Mongrel Mob, Hells Angels etc. Nearly every town has a chapter. Some keep to themselves, some not so much. Mike, same applies to Murupara now pretty much.
  6. Oh yeah, forgot; if you didn't keep an eye on it the SJ started to slide around the krab due to the way the rope and tether were pulling on it. This led to the krab being side loaded. Not pretty.
  7. Oldmill, set my SJ up today with the RW and found that not only was the rope twisted as it ran through the SJ but the whole braking mechansim looked cak handed, so to speak. I didn't like the way the rope pulled the SJ around and had the tether one side and the rope the other. Made operating the brake a bit of PITA to be honest. Reckon it's much easier just with the hitch climber set up. Not sure how it runs with the LJ but I wasn't keen to go for a fly with the SJ/RW set up as I have it currently.
  8. I think that's all changed too now Mike. Taupo isn't the big forestry/milling town it was and Tokoroa has slowed since the Kinleith plant started dropping off its production. Much of the Taupo surrounds have been turned in to farmland, all the forests by the main roads have gone. There still a big forestry element in Turangi, Rotorua, Edgecombe and Kawerau but Murupara has run down to pretty much a gang town. Shouldn't run the place down but its not somewhere I'd like to hang around too long. Reporoa is now for farming and those that want the lifestyle block far enough out of Rotovegas and Taupo but still within commuting distance.
  9. I can't exactly remember what happened because we didn't like the look of it as soon as we set it up so we'll have another crack next week. If I remember correctly the SJ twisted around and side loaded the crab. If we got that right the braking system on the SJ couldn't be accessed properly because the rope and tether were interfering, if that makes sense. Just the whole thing didn't look safe.
  10. Hope I've got enough money left to do the trip once I get there
  11. OK, I've been back through all 46 pages and I'm still to find a decent close up shot of a set up with either SJ or LJ. We tried last week with our gear but ended up either side loading the gear or interfering with the brake on the SJ. This whole RW SJ LJ set up is pretty new to me so I want to make sure I get it right. Anyone want to humour me and put up some close up shots of their set ups. I'm one of these that understands by looking rather than reading so it would be appreciated.
  12. Last time I was there it looked like it was derelict site until I saw cars coming and going. All gang affiliated. So what was it about Scotia Mike?
  13. Murupara? Now that is possibly the scariest thing I've read on Arbtalk. Only one place worse round this neck of the woods and that's Kainagaroa.
  14. I work for both Taupo District Council and myself (treeline arbor care). I used to be based out of Treescape's Hamilton yard when I worked for them so know a few of the boys up that way. I also ran Treescape's Northern Utilities out of Silverdale for a couple of years so a few names from around the country I reckognize maybe from conversations with others.

  15. Treescape have several of them Rowan, as do Asplundh. They're used mainly for line clearance but can come in extremely handy for this kind of thing. There was a house, couple of fences and gates etc underneath so there would have been a bit of rigging involved. Knowing how loosely connected the holding wood was for the remaining leader, the idea of rigging it down was not one I was keen to fllow up so we brought these guys in. I used to work for them so know what the gear can do along with a good operator. 65 foot reach with over centre boom, insulated.
  16. MS200T will cost about $1500. Have a look at the TREETOOLS website and that will give you an idea of how much gear costs here. You'll have to weigh that aginst the cost of bringing your gear in to the country. Also, why would you want to bring your saw/s in to NZ or are you thinking of contract climbing? If you're employed your saws will be provided.
  17. From NZ I think mate. Not sure though. How long you been in NZ?

  18. Hey Chris, yeah Bro, came out in 98. There's a few of us on Arbtalk. I have to say I reckognize your name from somewhere but can't place it. If you're down in Taupo let me know and me and my offsider will catch up for a coffee if you're keen. I'll keep my eye out for an arborist. I know there's a trainee down here that's looking for a job but don't know what he's like. You could always check out the Treescape cast offs.

  19. Finishing off the call out job from Sunday. Stump still has to come down but nailed out remaining head, chipped and cleaned up in 2 hours.
  20. Sweet, I'll go back through the thread at the weekend if I get chance
  21. Oldmill, talking to my offsider today and we thought about using DRT for ascending and then changing over to the RW once in the tree. He was working on a very thick and matted Pin Oak and was finding it hard to get a rope anywhere so resorted to DRT just to get up and then swapped. I'd be keen to see your set up with the LJ and RW. Tried to work it with the spiderjack today but just couldn't figure out how to do it. Everytime we got it set up it just looked dodgy and I sure wasn't going to put my trust in it so a few pointers would be appreciated Sometimes you can't quite see how it should all go together until someone shows you how it's done and only then does it all make sense.
  22. Talking of abandoned; poor old husky left there at the bottom of the root plate.
  23. Now that's definately a freaky house. Yep, that is the bow of a boat. I think it was once owned by Errol Flyn. It was taken out on Lake Taupo on a beautiful summer day. How does Eureka look in early spring? I have to make sure I don't try to cram so much in that I do nothing properly and everything half hearted. Hoping that if this trip goes well I can organize another in a couple of year's time.
  24. Oldmill, still haven't tried yet I'm afraid. We keep meaning to get out and spend a day training before letting loose in a tree for real but with a few urgent jobs coming in it's been put on the back burner. My colleague, Masonw, has taken to it like a duck to water but then he has some SRT background whereas I still struggle with ascending. The working side of it seems quite simple but I just struggle with not trying to pull the rope through the device rather than just climbing the rope. Hopefully next week we'll get to spend a few hours playing. I'm also keen to see how it operates with a spiderjack. Will let you know how I get on as we go.
