  1. Good point. Ed, is your signature taken from a song called `Stay`, by U2 ?
  2. silvafox, as long as your new truck is at least £2K inc VAT you can still claim the vat back in full. Its only on purchases less than 2K that you cannot. A load of kit lumped together on one invoice to make up to £2K counts as well. I think. Also, if you wanted to you don`t have to wait `till your year end to join.
  3. Cheers Ed and skyhuck. I`m not really in a position to buy your crane just yet. The truck I have now is fine (iveco 7.5 e15). Actually Ed, you`ve seen it. I`ll have had it for 9 years in Sept. If and when it gives up the ghost I want to know what I should replace it with. I like the idea of a 18 ton truck for big jobs. But then I`d want to keep my 7.5 ton for everyday stuff. I`m looking for a one truck solution to service my one-driver, one- crew outfit. The narrowness of the `Mogs, compared to an 18 tonner, appeals to me - for backing into driveways.
  4. Would this work ? - behind the cab of a 1650 unimog (approx. GVW 10 ton). http://www.jww-media.com/media/uptruckcenter/page/f61z_usa.pdf Would it be possible to keep the standard size chip body, only shift it back to accommodate the crane ?
  5. Ground Guards closer to home
  6. Sorry. I get it now. That is how mine is too. When I said `site clearance`, I meant only if you can drive it onto firm ground - and not over brambles, saplings, tree stumps etc. I couldn`t do that. Clearly your `Mog / Farmi combo is better suited for rough terrain. My set up is more suited to ponsing about in the suburbs and metropolis.
  7. lol ! That really does the lot. Chip box, overflow chip box / log trailer and crane. One Truck. One Driver. Its the Holy Grail of the owner-operated, one-crew tree firm !
  8. Skyhuck, congratulations on your new rig. It looks brilliant. Great stuff. Buzz, would a Botex 300 on the 3 point linkage be any good for your set up ? If you`ve already looked into it as an option I`d value your opinion.
  9. sorry treebogan I don`t understand. Our air filter is at the front under the hood / cover. Is that right? We`ve not had problems with it clogging either. What chipper are you using now?
  10. Cheers Ed. I don`t get why no-one else uses them. (But then I don`t know why everyone slags off the Willans harness.) I once had a chipper that I didn`t understand how to look after. It proved very costly. Then it got nicked. Now I look after my XL like family. I even put Evian in the radiator.
  11. Sorry you`ve had no joy with your Vermeers. My experience of different chippers is very limited but I know if I lost mine I`d get the same again.
  12. Does the lot Never fails to impress on site clearance. Nifty enough to back down any driveway - as long as there is room for the truck. Maintenance is a breeze. Supplier backup is the best service I have received from any company ever.

    teamwork!

`Nice pull, Crash... Really give it to her... Almost like a snatch.` I think he`d be better off with less confidence. Good spot on the knock with the other tree. I knew something they were doing didn`t look safe. I just couldn`t place what it was.
  14. I`ve always been on 10%. I like the sound of skyhuck`s 9% better. And he`s side-stepped the CIS thing !
  15. Thats gonna be my plan now.
  16. Mac it may appear confusing but will be well worth your while. The helpline is very good.
  17. The blurry letter above, I think says the boots passed the test at the minimum chain speed of 20m/s. I don`t think anyone suggested they failed the test. Its just that the steel toe caps appear to provide better chainsaw protection and crushing defences. Obviously the trade-off is cost and colder toes.
  18. This VAT scheme for small businesses has been saving me around 3K a year. Thought it might interest some of you that may not have come across it. http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/manuals/bimmanual/bim31585.htm
  19. G 7REE This link explains the scheme. http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/new-cis/cis340.pdf'>http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/new-cis/cis340.pdf What you need is a Company Unique Tax Reference (UTR). This will allow you to avoid 30% deductions from your payments. You will still be deducted 20% but you are able to claim this back at the end of your year. Another way is to offset the deductions each month against your employees` PAYE / NIC payments. This way you get the deductions back monthly rather than annually. 20. Love my Hilux. Choice of the Taliban.
  21. My Haix boots arrived today. Thanks to Gristwood and Toms, Steve and to all the other sponsors. We appreciate you supporting the forum.
  22. `Going for 50 odd years` in itself will not save a business. But there are things a business can do to increase its success. Not getting paid for a 10k job would be terrible. Maybe a firm should not take on any single job it can not afford to do for free.
  23. I think the words are meant to show that a downturn in work is not something an established business is powerless to overcome.
  24. I have not run a business during a recession. I am far too young. But some words of wisdom I received last week went along these lines: `Do not panic. Negativity can affect your decisions and become a self fulfilling prophecy. Recession is not necessarily a bad thing for your business. Its just a part of the economic cycle. It should be easy to thrive in a recession because the competition will be terrified.`
