    RCW 3001 at work

Not my call Al. For all practical sense and purpose Im sure it'd be fine. But from a liability/insurance pov, the fact that itd been modded, I dont know how that might change things. You know how it is mate, the red-tape era we live in. Drop me a pm if you like.

You have the best avatar ever, Al. We have plans for the next generation Dual....when that time comes. The logistics of us (Stein) retro fitting those that are already out there wouldnt work out too well for anyone. Its a heavy lump of metal to be sending to and fro. The majority of which went over seas too I believe.
  4. Yep. Cool stuff man
  5. That's a good days work mate

The friction hitch is fine....so long as it's not all glazed or oversized. A 6 wrap VT for instance is good for 3000lb plus without slipping. So long as you always tend the slack on the bollard, there's really not much to worry about. Thanks. Ben, the key to raising horizontal limbs is to keep them attached at the stump, by a hinge or sling or whatever means.....that way you're only needing to produce a portion of the force because the limb is being held at the other end. I used load meter to simulate a dead lift, and it's good for 1500lb as it's designed for. At 1200 and above its obviously more comfortable to use 2 hands to crank the lever, but it's not too much of a struggle with one either. We could have gone for the 2500 winch, but it was a lot slower, and you got to have somewhere to lay these huge limbs down also. 1500 I thought was a little more realistic. Edit: I'll obviously look out for the situation you asked about, and video if I can set it up. Cheers

Yeah it cuts in fine Adam. I don't usually, personally, because it still my job to explore if and what happens. At the very least we should've retightened the ratchet for the big logs at the end, but we didn't and it was fine. Ti, it's the same one mate. Thanks.

Thanks all. Adam I think it's about 15-17 feet or something. Sam, the Harken the best winch out there, hence the cost. Advantages....well you can take ours off at any time and not worry about it getting damaged. Same as it can be installed at any time even under a suspended load. You do make good progress with the Stein because the gear ratio is much less....but obviously you can't lift or pull as much on a singled line. The truth is I would never expect a GRCS owner to replace that device with a 3001. But for someone who doesn't own either it's a solid but very affordable option .

Sorry mate. I did try to make it fit....but it wasn't good enough. Thanks
  10. Some footage from a recent job. The winch gives us some nice options here. Not a huge tree but a fragile situation. The home owner did a fine job boarding out his glass railings beforehand. Thats not normal. Great work from Alex and Dave on the ground. Use HD setting. Thanks
  11. Thanks mate. Got her out today. The truck, not my daughter. Solid. Was just on my lunch and catching up on the forum.
  12. Oh not a lot mate....probably 16 on average. Sometimes more or less depending how you drive. Diesel is cheap here though, comparatively. More to the point I can pull a 2 ton chipper around and not even notice.....and the motor lasts for decades.
  13. Thanks guys. While big Trucks are common place here, the 7.3 powerstroke engine is real beauty. I made a short vid this morning for anyone whos interested. If you like diesels, driving this model would put a smile on your face.
  14. I just got this 2000 Ford F350....to replace the Ram ive been running. Its a 4x4 7.3 powerstroke Diesel. 8ft bed or just over. Apart from some rust on the wheel arches its in fine shape.

  17. Sean, glad you're alive, and that this isnt a condolence thread. Rest up mate and count youre blessings.

    Tall Fir Rigging

Depends how much effort, time or necessity is involved. if its an easy climb then its nice to set a tie in for both the climbline and zip line at the top of the tree from the word go. If you need to swing support of balance limbs from the back or sides of the tree, or raise them up even, then the zip line has to be set at least 2+ times the height verses the length of the limbs to be cut. If you have the air space or clearance to just butt tie the limbs and let them hang upside down then you dont need a higher rigging point. If you do choose the high rigging point then you might want to set redirects down the trunk to ensure that you're not working at a greater distance than 25 ft or so from the redirects or high rigging point. Otherwise it can be a pita to whip the zipline back to the climber each time because the line ends up so far away from the tree. Its show clearly in the Hillside Fir vid I put on recently. Thanks
  19. Yes we will mate
  20. They say an hour or just over. You can also turn off the screen. I don't know because I switch the whole unit off between recordings. I never leave it on. And keep a spare battery in the case. With the med view, I must say it's the most true to life I've seen. The wide angle I don't like.
  21. Thats right James, it has a touch screen on the back. I was never a believer in gopro until I got this unit. The video quality is second to none....although I dont like the wide angle view, its not realistic. The mountings are totally solid, as are the many mounting accessories available, spare batteries, cases etc. I just tend to reach up and hit the on/off-stop/start buttons. You just have to learn to distinguish the various beeps. I can only speak from my own experience of course, but am totally happy with the 4 silver so far.
  22. Maybe you have to see the raw files, on 15 inch + screen....because it's not even close. The gopro by a mile. The iPhone is about as good as my very first helmet camera ie can't focus on anything moving, confused by mass textures like bark and foliage, confused by the light, lacks definition. Apple files always look good on a phone, but not when you watch them on a full size screen.
  23. I should mention too the gopro is set on medium view, not the wide angle that makes every thing far away And squashed.
  24. The title probably doesnt mean anything to anyone here....it came about through a discussion I had with a colleague just recently....the other guy in the tree as it turns out. Hes a big fan of apple products. Anyway, some footage from a big fir I posted some pictures of last week. Use HD setting
  25. Well done Dan. Gonna watch this later when everyones out of the way:thumbup1:
