Timber stack covers?

Lost some info I had on material you can buy to cover timber stacks.

I was going to buy something different to keep log stacks dry (er!) this winter.

Seen threads in past but searches coming up blank, so can anyone help?

Where /who sells covers for timber stacked in 25tonne+ piles?

What are the best covers you've tried, stuff we bought last year disintergrated 1st use..

I remember someone mentioning curtain trailer side covers from an artic trailer as being good

If it disintegrated it sounds like the grams per square metre (gsm) was too low. I use around 200 gsm and they survived the last couple of winters fine. Think the highest is around 550 gsm which is used for marquee roofs/walls, etc.

i managed to get hold of 4 advertising banners that you put on farm trailers you can see from the motorway. things like sky and nescafe on them and that material is so sturdy and thick. i expect to have them many years down the line.

not sure exactly what it's classed as but i recommend it.

I have the top cover from an arctic grain carrier that I picked up from the local tarp makers for £10. This covers 90% of my stack.

I weigh it down with several pieces of oak as the wind gets quite strong in the winter time and I don't want it to blow away! It is very heavy and needs to be put in place on a still day.

You could try ringing Peter Stenner of Woodfuel Barn Steph. I know he used some covers last year he got from the states I think.

I'm using it to cover hay bales in the field but they advertise it for use with timber stacks or firewood. When it arrived it wasn't exactly what I was expecting. It's like a woven landscaping fabric and isn't waterproof in itself. However, water runs off it and let's the material (timber, hay, straw, woodchip etc.) underneath it breathe.

I spoke to the manufacturer about it and they assure me it works! I will report back further in the year.

I found with tarps that the top layer of logs were always saturated with condensation so maybe toptex will cure this problem.

It's not 100% watertight but 99% of water will just run off it as long as it's not got the chance to pool anywhere. It's a felt-like cloth that lets air through so timber dries a lot better than either uncovered or under tarps.

The other advantage of not being airtight is that it's a lot easier to tie down as it won't catch the wind like a tarp does.

The stuff I have is a reasonable green colour as well so not too much of an eyesore.

I've used it on hay, straw, wood and even a load of wool.

It does not get any condensation build up, but you do have to make sure water doesn't pool.

Been checking out the fabric for covering logs/hay etc on website you've listed, looks good, easy to use, but quite expensive if it only lasts 3 years.

Looked at silage covers etc, they are all ££££'s!

Find tarps very heavy/difficult to manhandle over large stacks, but do have several. available.
